This has been lower for "alleged" Sony factory 2nds (but possibly brand new) for $503 during eBay sales and without the extra battery. But I believe this deal is the lowest for brand new stock. JB have previously sold it with the extra battery for $750.

I bought a beat up used one for $400 and can highly recommend it. It's completely replaced my 9 year old mid-range DSLR with 3 lens' as well as my phone camera in most cases. I just wish I didn't have an iPhone so I could take advantage of NFC to make downloading photos even easier.

Unless you really need 4K video, this is all the non-professional camera you will need for most situations.

    • I was looking to buy one of these cameras for my trip to Vietnam, or even Mk 4. However since I need a new phone soon too, I was thinking the new Huawei Mate 20 Pro's camera would be a sufficient substitute for a point-and-shoot. Not entirely sure on the tech spec comparison between this camera and the mentioned Huawei Mate 20 Pro's camera, however the phone camera looks gorgeous from YouTube reviews of the phone. Would you have any thoughts on the phone camera vs this compact camera? Cheers

      • phone is fine.

you'll still carry your phone with you everyday after you're back from vietnam, whereas this camera will be left inside drawer for most of the time.

      • I'd say it depends on your requirements, as each has their advantages.

The Sony has a much bigger censor (1 inch) and higher quality glass, resulting in better image quality. Yes, the multiple Leicas on the Huawei have set a new benchmark for phone camera quality but they're still tiny compared to the RX100's Carl Zeiss, which also gives you flexible 3x zoom. The Sony also gives you very powerful manual controls - it's pretty much a DSLR in a pocket. It also has a more powerful flash, that can also be angled up to bounce of a ceiling for softer lighting and a full-size electronic viewfinder.

If the above aren't particularly important and you then, as others have said, go with the Mate 20 Pro and you won't regret it. It's obviously a lot more convenient and has faster processing and more powerful AI. I personally couldn't justify spending $1,600 on a smart phone, considering that how quickly they become obsolete, hence I bought the used RX100 Mk3 for a quarter of that amount.

EDIT: Here's a quote from the recent Ausdroid review of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro:

What I’ll say is this. Using the P20 Pro and moving from that to the Mate 20 Pro makes using a point-and-shoot camera feel positively prehistoric. I have Sony’s RX 100 M5 which is one of the best non-DSLR cameras money can buy. I know this, because I went and bought it after extensive research. It is, and remains, the best camera I’ve ever used.

However, next to what the Huawei Mate 20 Pro can do, it’s a dinosaur.

I believe he's talking about the user experience though, rather than the image quality.

  • Prices for these have held so steady for four years. There hasn’t been many great special prices in between.

$581 on ebay with PEPPY. Could take another around 5% off with ebay gift cards for total of $556 with no bonus battery plus 1% cash back.

    • How much is the spare battery worth?

        About tree fiddy

    • Might be cheaper tonight with ebay code PYIPPEE (15%) off. Plus the ebay gift cards

      • Currently $615 with Peppy from Sony Australia eBay

        • Ah, thought peppy was 5%. My mistake it’s 20%

          • @stickymoo: It's still far from the best price at the moment - it's $511 from other sellers using the 15% code.

            • @elektron: Would you please care to provide the link

@An0nymous: Just noticed that it doesn't start until 5 pm.

Here's a couple of listings both with free shipping:

                • @elektron: Oh ok thanks, I was wondering, cause I can't see a better deal at the moment.thank you

@An0nymous: No worries. And sorry, my calculation was wrong - 15% would make it $543, not $511. I was thinking 20%.

Wow these really held up in price well, got it 4 years ago using this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/169628 and price is still pretty similar!

    • That's because their pricing strategy is to price every new model with an even higher RRP (Apple anyone?), while maintaining the price of the superseded models. And also because they hold their resale value very well in the used market, but that's related to the previous point.

  • Seems to be expired, despite “valid till January 2019”.
