    Any deals?

whats the price performance king in frames per dollar for a 1440p gsync 144hz monitor - is still the gtx 1080?

    • +1

      1080 cant do 144fps at 1440p..

      • what do you suggest?
i dont really play AAA titles

        • -1

Even not AAA titles, it's not easy to maintain 144 fps in 1440p for 1080. I would say at least 2080 for that expectation.

          • @chewchew: lol thanks for the downvotes. I'd like to see a 1080 do 120fps in AAA games on ultra and 1440p. Even a 2080 cant do 144fps in BF V..

            • +2

@Ryxxi: Ehh. Not me who put downvote on your comment. Agree with you there.

            • +3

@Ryxxi: So what? Almost all players turn down settings in multiplayer so they can see other players easier and faster because of increased rendering speed.

            • @Ryxxi: Just for reference my 1080ti playing Assassins Creed Odyssey struggled with an averaged 60fps @1440p everything maxed and dropping heavily for some sections to 20fps in the stress test then topping around 100FPS. Not playable like that so had to lower some stuff. having said that some FPS games which are not uber heavy have no issues at 150 +FPS. So depends on the game.

            • +3

@Ryxxi: So dial a few settings back to high for a substantial frame rate boost and a near imperceptible loss to visual fidelity? It's not hard. I've been using a 1440p monitor since 2011. I had a Radeon 7950.

      • Not even CS Go?

        • definitely can do cs go

    • Well, if you want to get 100+ fps on most new games with a gtx 1080 youre going to have to turn some graphical settings down which defeats the purpose IMO. 1080ti or whatever the new equivalent is?

      • +1

Happy with my 2070 for $649.

      • +2

To be fair, a lot of titles have very few notable differences in graphical quality if you downgrade from ultra to high, and some people would much rather prioritise a smoother 144fps over the best graphics setting or resolution

      • Well, if you want to get 100+ fps on most new games with a gtx 1080 youre going to have to turn some graphical settings down which defeats the purpose IMO.

1440p isn't easy to get 100+ FPS, I got my GTX 1080 back when it was still the top card and even back then you had to turn stuff down to reach that, it definitely doesn't defeat the purpose though because you can go higher FOV whilst still maintaining visual clarity due to increased resolution.

Now that the card is getting a bit older even turning down settings is a struggle to get it over 100fps on new games. I would say the GTX 1080 is way more suited to 144hz 1080p gaming than 144hz 1440p gaming.

    • My 1080 does about 90fps on ultra 1440p which is fine :)

  • +4

    excludes cpu's, fun.

  • What's a good motherboard to look out for?
Intel, potentially doing some OC and used mainly for gaming.
    As future-proof as possible.

Wanting great bang for buck ($200-300 mark)

Doing a bit of research of my own, but appreciate any feedback here.

    Thanks

Which platform do you want to use?

      • Intel

        • Which one you do you target specifically? 8th gen, 9th gen?

          • @chewchew: Oh sorry, I'd prefer 9th gen, I imagine that would be better for future-proofing?

Performance between the 2 doesn't seem THAT major though, so happy for either.

            • +1

@putshan: Yes, it seems to me that "future-proofing" means mostly the best at the moment. 9th gen seems to be more appealing at the perspective this compared to 8th.
Given the price range, Gigabyte Aorus Pro is a solid choice. It has 12 phases of CPU power delivery with good thermal. 2 m.2 slots with cooler. 2 reinforced x16 for GPUs. Also, USB type C is there in both back and front io if you into that.

              • @chewchew: Amazing response, thank you so much for the help.

                I'll look into it.

        • Intel Core i7-8700K (8th Gen). Delid using a delidding tool. Run it naked with EK Supremacy EVO directly on die using EK Naked Ivy kit and CPU die guard. Obtain 5.1 Ghz on all 6 cores.

          GIGABYTE Z390 GAMING SLI

64GB DDR4 RAM, at least 3000 MHz and no more than CL16. Set XMP 2.0 profile in Bios.
          I chose the G.Skill F4-3000C16Q-64GSXKB

          2 X 2TB GIGABYTE Z390 GAMING SLI

          2 X Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti

Gigabyte Alpine Ridge Dual Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C PCI Card

  • Any actual deals? 10% off doesn't make this a deal unless there are confirmed better prices.

EDIT: Looks like shipping will kill any deals.

    • "For all orders over $200 within the Perth Metro Area, we are happy to offer standard courier delivery at no extra charge!" from PLE FAQ page. Not sure if it applies to other areas.

  • Always use PLE when I want to collect computer related product straight away and not wait for it to be posted. Generally very good prices for a bricks and mortar store.

    • +2

Are you drunk? They have the worst prices, but the best store and support. If you want good prices for a store then go to MSY. Most times PLE won't even price-match MSY.

      • I don't think it's fair to say they have 'the worst prices' overall. They're price competitive on some items and not on others.

        • If you are after prices. Then currently amazon, joybuy, newegg , futu_online and techfast will the most common stores to go to. PLE are not known for their pricing their to B & M with decent staffing model.

        • +1

"They're price competitive on some items and not on others."
Yes, but they're not competitive on far more items than they are. Hence it is completely fair to say they have the worst prices overall…

  • Are monitors excluded from this sale? Can't seem to apply the code for any in-stock monitor.
    edit:
managed to get it working. website is a bit fiddly.
