  • Thank you !
DDR4 on it's way from newegg
Motherboard on it's way from qld.
    This is much appreciated.
Now to scab out on a NVME M.2 and I'm done

How quick does the cashrewards come through? Never done it before

    • 2-3 months or so - if it tracks properly.

      • +8

This is why I'm not a fan of cashrewards. It's 50-50 if it works, and by the time it should've processed, you've forgotten anyway.

        • +3

The first time I purchased using cashrewards I didn't realise it takes so long to come through and also forgot about. After 1 year they took my $30 away for not collecting.

    • +1

What motherboard did you go with?

      • The x370 Taichi
It's on eBay for 149 plus delivery
The other day I got it for 10% of so that nearly paid for delivery

Looks like a nice board with heaps of features.
Enough for me that's for sure.

The only real feature I wanted was 2 m.2s
And this has wifi built in

        • +4

I have this board with a 2700x and two NVME drives plugged in. Make sure your OS NVME drive is placed in the top slot, and your storage NVME is the bottom slot. The bottom M.2 slot is only PCIe Gen2x4 speed, which is a fair bit slower than the M.2 Ultra slot on the top.

You may also want to upgrade the onboard wifi+BT module. The newer Intel 9265 Wireless card is a much better performer and runs Bluetooth 5.0

Don't make the same mistake as I did and didn't plan this out from the start! I took apart and put my build back together many times because of poor planning haha

          • @Garbotoxin: Thanks for the review. I am after one for my 2700x as well and many forums suggested to go for x470 boards for future proofing. I wont be using 2 GPUs and might only do OC though not that much fussed about it.
Is it worth spending extra for those boards?

Also 2700x was almost double the cost and I hope it is 2 times better :)

            • @EnALup: X370 and X470 doesn't give you any difference in fundamental performance - X470 doesn't require a bios update to be compatible with zen+ architecture (Ryzen 2XXX series) - they will work straight out of the box.

X370 series boards need a bios update as the boards were released for the first set of CPUs (Zen architecture - the Ryzen 1XXX series) on the AM4 socket - once bios is updated the will work the same. Most sellers for motherboards will do this for you free of charge (I ordered my X370 Taichi board from ebay and just let the seller know I need it updated).

The only question is whether or not the X370 chipset (and maybe X470) will support Zen 2 next year, as AMD has promised that the AM4 socket will stick around 2020 or 2021 (unlike Intel who like to change sockets once every generation or two - I'm not an AMD fanboy, I've used Intel for all my life up until April this year).

The other fundamental benefit that X470 boards have over X370 have StoreMi technology licensed, which means you dont need a separate license (FuzeDrive) for it. This nifty software will "combine" your SSD/NVME with another slower drive to give you "higher speed" and performances but with more space where you don't need to spend more on a high capacity SSD.

              • @Garbotoxin: Thanks. I wont be using StoreMI tbh and was looking for not too expensive X470 or B450 taken I will be using one GPU.
Like you I want to use NVME m.2 slots for OS.

          • @Garbotoxin: How does one upgrade the integrated wifi?

            • @Sopzo: The wifi+bt onboard card (if I recall correctly is an Intel 3165 card) is just another M.2 form factor slot that's vertical like your PCIe slots towards the bottom of your motherboard. There's screws that you can undo to remove the plastic covering the IO, and 2 screws mounting the Intel 3165 card to the board to make sure it doesn't wiggle around when you place the board into your case. You can simply undo all those screws and pull out the card like you do with a GPU/PCIe card, and replace it with the new one!

I replaced my 3165 with a 9260 as it offers higher transfer speeds over A/C wifi and Bluetooth 5.0

              • @Garbotoxin: Thanks. Few more questions if you don't mind -

What would you suggest, buying a motherboard with wifi or separately buying a wifi card?

How much did 9260 card cost?

                • @Sopzo: Depends on your needs, the 9260 costed $15 from Umart. A good branded AC PCIe wifi card like the PCE-AC68 (which I also have but can't use because it has compatibility issues with Windows 10 latest version) goes for $100+, but it goes up to 1.3Gbps on AC and 600Mbps on N, but also doesn't have built in Bluetooth like the 9260. Most users don't need this as this doesn't effectively help with internet browsing speeds, more for local file transfers when you're working with speeds at that level.

Also depends on what the price difference is between a wifi mobo and non-wifi mobo

        • dont mean to ruin your excellent bargain, but the tiachi series have a longstanding audio static noise that appears after a few weeks

    • haha same boat as you.

This is so good. It says 'unlocked. Does that mean it can be overclocked to 2600x speeds? I imagine they bin them so the best overclockers become 2600x chips.

    • +1

all ryzen cpus are unlocked :)
(need a bxxx series or higher mobo though not the axxx series)

      • Do you know how well these non 'x' chips usually overclock? Oh and I'm sorry that aliens stole your money.

        • You should be able to hit 4.0-4.1 with a decent cooler

          • @JMC: I was able to hit 4.0 with the stock cooler.

            Didn’t try 4.1

            • @kehuehue: What sort of temps? I'm tempted to over clock, but at the same time it's still a very capable chip at stock speeds and meets all of my needs. It's nice how quiet the cooler is at stock, too.

        • They usually oc just as well as those x versions.

  • Only 1 left in stock (more on the way).

  • You think this is an upgrade over my 1500x?

    • +1

I would wait for the next release

Unless the 1500x doesn’t meet your multitasking needs

    • wait for 3xxx series

  • +1

    back to $265 for me.

    • Yeah same

  • Is this worth getting over the 2600X if i'm just after some light gaming and normal every day use?

    • That's the general consensus, yeah. The performance gain isn't enough to justify the increase in cost.

  • +2

Which intel CPU does this compete with?

    • +4

i5-8400. Note that 8400 is generally better at gaming ~5%

      • Which is also at $300 lowest. Gotta love intel!

  • +3

2700 listed at $348 as well, but this is definitely the better value deal.

    • +3

Thanks mate, purchased the 2700 due to your comment.
Works out to $313.20 with the 10%.
      A 2700 from MSY is $419 and 2600X is $349.

      • +1

Congrats, glad you finally found a CPU :)
