Deal of the Day at Amazon AU is the well-known CTEK 12V battery charger. Seems to be a pretty good price. Repco has 25% off today but it's priced at $120 post-discount.

The MXS 3.8 Charger is also available for $75.90

Google tells me that both chargers are suitable for most cars and motorcycles, difference being that the MXS 5.0 is more powerful at 5 amps and has a battery recondition mode.

Happy Boxing Day everyone!

Damn good charger. Use it to maintain and even recondition both EGM and non EGM batteries.

      I do well with a 6A SmartCharger that a friend got @ AliExpress ($17 shipped) &
gave me after finding the lead to battery "too short"…

("Now, when I was a boy, a girl would have saved $17 & extended the lead(s) herself!")

Its display shows more info ( + has a few LEDs. As well )

I had to supply my own AC adapter, but it works fine

PS She says Lotsa vendors have same unit
at prices from AU$ 17 to way over $100)

  • Can you charge this from powerbank?

    • I just bought some 200w PV panels (cheap at $68 each, shipped fr Qld)
that'd charge 'em for you. Not quite small enuf to fit a pocket or handbag

  • Best thing I’ve ever bought for my “weekend car” that never get driven

    • how often do you have to charge "weekend car" once a week or just leave it on all the time when not in use?

      • You just plug it in when you get back home and leave it on. Once checked and charged, it just keeps a trickle up to voltage.

      • With the CTEK, you can just leave it hooked up the whole time. Without a CTEK, I'd usually charge mine once a month but it has an Optima deep cycle in it. It would start fine after 2-3 weeks sitting there…not super ideal for the batteries to run them out and then charge though, letting a smart charger do it's thing is a lot better for them.

        • would charging it once a week be alright?

          • @venomx2: Yeah I used to work in the mines 3 on 1 off, would therefor charge my car once a month and barely drive it before flying back out again. A relatively dumb charger which did at least have trickle fallback. It was fine. New battery before all that started though.

At the time I was looking into solar alternatives, didn't know about CTEK back then (if it even existed) but the once-a-month kept the car good. Started first time every time.

I now own this very CTEK. No longer work away from home but I run it on our cars from time to time anyway.

            • @Click_It: I work fifo so leave the car there for 6 week at a time on trickle charge and it starts up every time my battery is nearly 5 year old now

              • @modgod: Nice. Yeah with a CTEK you could just leave this on. I wouldn't recommend doing so with dumber chargers though.

LoL at Repco. I checked their 'discount' earlier this morning!

Looks like this will not charge EFB batteries used in the start stop cars, with deep cycle. Need the CT5 start stop charger.

  • Great charger have one, can’t comment on the price though.

  • It's a great charger. Saved one of my car batteries by reconditioning it twice and noticed it doesn't drop below 12v any more and holds more charge.

  • Excellent charger, and the charging algorithms shit all over other cheaper chargers that you can get online.

  • Awesome charger have been using this for well over a year, I use it for my bike whenever its been sitting for too long and battery has died.

  • Jumped on that. Thanks OP!

  • I have a few 7ah batteries lying around that are decommissioned backups and this has brought a couple back from the dead. Great tool

  • saved me a trip or two to the workshop for a battery replacement. OR have to jumpstart my car if you are in no hurry to drive it. if your car is completely dead, it can revive it and restore your battery to good health overnight. would buy another if i didn't already have one.

  • I have a mazda 3 bm which takes EFB battery. Will this work or CT5 Start/Stop is a better option?

  • Thanks for heads up, was looking at Repco deal until I saw this here…..!!! Jumped on it too.

  • (Noob question) is it worth doing this for any reason other than a flat battery? e.g) saving petrol etc

    • +1

We were all noobs at some point.

A flat or dying battery could technically result in higher fuel consumption but not a noticeable amount. The alternator charges your battery naturally as you drive, it's job is to get the battery up to 12V or thereabouts and then rest. If your battery is incapable of reaching 12V it's possible the alternator could stay on permanently but your biggest concern then would not be added fuel consumption but rather the alternator working beyond it's design (think buying a new alternator soon).

For fuel consumption reasons alone, don't buy this. If you want one of the best battery chargers that not only charge but can bring a poor health battery (not always) back to good health. Buy it.

I look at it this way, it's under $100, a new quality battery is double that. This may help prolong the purchase of your next battery.

Is it just me or is the price $119.00??

    • Yeah looks like the MXS 5.0 now OOS from Amazon, the higher price is from other sellers. The 3.8 is still available however

    • Nope not just you. It’s showing $119.00 for me too.

I managed to find the charger for slightly cheaper on eBay here.
