Optus Pre-Paid MyTab : NOW $149 ($100 PRICE DROP!)

430

Just saw this price drop in at my local Optus Dealer. Asked staff about it and found this price drop happened this morning and this should be the new price for anywhere this is being sold.

I'm assuming this is in retaliation to the recent price drop of the T-Touch Tab from $279 down to $199

Some will probably think this price drop may be in relation to Kogan's Agora Tablet announced yesterday but from what i'm told this price drop has been in the pipeline for a little while…
(and come on… we all know the telco's arent all that on the ball :P)

Theres a few comments popping up on Whirlpool about this too…

Great product for the price. Anyone looking for a android tablet should definitely take a look at this, especially now with this price drop.

Have had a go of this and the Telstra T-Touch Tab and the Optus Tab is leaps and bounds better IMO.

EDIT: DSE have the tab available online for $149 with FREE DELIVERY.
(Thanks to bigsue19 for pointing this out…)

yeah it got a pretty decent review…
and compare that to the telstra t-touch tab review hahahaha

The price has fluctuated a bit:

      Started at $279
      Down to $249
      Now down to $149

  • i was going to grab a galaxy tab from JB for $360
Now that I got an iPad 2… galaxy tab didn't look good enough even at $360

(still, galaxy tab is an actual phone which is a plus!)

This seems decent for an android tab for fun
but 2.1 eclair OS? shame… even 2.2 froyo would've been nice.

oh well iPad 2 is the way to go until any other honeycomb tablets are out in the market!!

  • Is this a better deal than the Kogan Agora tab? This has 3g capability (insert SIM card and surf the web anywhere) while the Kogan only has wifi, so you need to be withtin a wifi hotspot for web access. The Kogan can play HD videos though so depends what you need more I guess.

    • here's the full specs for the Optus Tab if that helps your decision at all…

I like the fact that this has 3G compared to the Kogan Agora. Optus data recharges are quite good too…
Other big difference is Optus tab has resistive screen but easy to get use to with time.

    • @ Billy_Bob

The Agora has the wrong specs

      Read Here

  • Are you able to make phone call using this tab as you can insert a SIM for 3G?

    • yeah its got a loudspeaker for calls. see specs link above.
and if you see the recharge tab here you'll see the Optus recharges for it include "My Credit" for calls along with the data component.
89c per min and 39c flagfall for calls.
also has Bluetooth too so im assuming you could use a Bluetooth hands-free too…?

It's not on the Optus website, but it's on DSE:

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/E6572/optus-zte-v9-pre-paid-…

    • didn't even think to check DSE…
thanks, ill add that info to the post

  • so if I only use it at home via wifi, I don't need to recharge at all?

    • Yes. You only need to recharge to use the 3G data.

awesome price! I bought mine at full price as soon as it came out. Great tablet for the price and even better now. I guess they have to adjust pricing to align with the steep drop of the Galaxy Tab 7".

2.2 rom is in the works now confirmed by ZTE Australia. I've got the 2.2 ROM but no way to flash it.

  • really good price, but think carefully about what you want it to do, if you want say an ebook reader with some casual net browsing, it's good, but if you want to play games or videos, not so good, 600mhz cpu that shows lag even with menu animations, and this from review "There are some apps that really struggle too: RockPlayer is our "go-to" DivX and XviD video player and it was basically unusable on the My Tab." the resistive lcd is also a deal breaker for some, but this screen is still responsive

    • Note: It's the ZTE v9 - generally regarded as not much up on the usual chinese no-name tablets.

The ZTE v9+ is on its way and is much more like it - which probably accounts for them cutting the price to clear stock.

Just to note, done a bit more digging around:

This looks to be effectively a ZTE Blade in a bigger, different, jacket. As such I think v2.2 is a certain before too long, and v2.3 shouldn't be impossible if someone gets the source out of them.

ZTE Blade is well regarded as a cheap but powerful smartphone.

        HOWEVER

Both this and the Blade run a MSM7227 processor. This is an ARM6 series job, which means Flash doesn't run, and probably never will. Overclocks are possible to get video to work OK, and YouTube will deliver MP4 video for all your cute cat needs. But do not expect Flash in the browser, its very unlikely/never gonna happen.

  • fingers crossed that the update to Froyo 2.2 brings some new life and speed to the device.

I can confirm that it struggles to play Divx files but it works great as a news reader and has very good battery life. Lasts probably around 2-3 days with about 2-3hrs browsing per day and on standby with push data for emails activated.

  • Anyone know how much data it comes with from DSE?

    • when i bought mine (from Big W) it came with a 3gb sim which lasts 3 months.

  • someone mentioned the Kogan tablet, well for $146 as of today it looks a lot better technically, the Kogan has a much better cpu, 1ghz Cortex A8 vs Qualcomm 600mhz, ram, Kogan 512mb vs ZTE ???, Kogan 4gb SD ZTE 2gb SD, Kogan capacitive lcd vs ZTE resistive lcd, however the Kogan doesn't say if it includes GPS

    • +2

Kogan doesn't have 3G - 3G is generally the expensive part of any tablet (compare Ipad wifi vs 3G and also the other Android tabs).

ZTE has 512mb RAM and has GPS.

  • ….BUT the Kogan does not have 3G, apart from that it seems to be better in all other areas.

    • +1

Bluetooth? And anything else Mr Kogan "forgot or accidentally" got wrong on the specs.

I would have thought 3G + GPS is a HUGE bonus over a slightly better CPU and different screen. The ability to use as a full 7" GPS and occasionally browse the net away from WiFi is a plus for me over the Kogan one. Plus it has been around and the specs/reviews are pretty solid compared to the rather large unknown of the Kogan one.

      • PLUS… you can walk into DSE or Optus and get one now and not be waiting for the end of May (potentially) or longer.

PLUS PLUS the My Tab can be used as a phone from what I can tell… the Kogan one cannot.

  • Just got mine from DSE @149 woohoo

  • yeah, but with the ipad you needed to choose between wifi or wifi+3G, depends on where you're going to use the tablet and what data plan you have, if you always have wifi you don't need 3G

  • Gee does Myer have this?

  • Can you read ebooks on this?

  • Is this worth the price for a relatively poor uni student just wanting it for no particular reason?
although, i might get use out of it at uni/around the house (even though I already own a macbook pro)?

    • +2

err… poor + no particular reason?

      no.

  • Oh…
I just bought one from DSE 1hour ago.
It's not work unless insert a Optus card…..

    • you mean it won't work if there is no sim card in it?

If it's a network lock issue you can get these unlocked on the web for free, look in the whirlpool thread for details…

  • +3

The Kogan has been downgraded.. no 1080p, no bluetooth and today the screen is now 800x480 (not 1024x600 as it was yesterday)..

    • +2

WOW… bait and switch much? cause i checked it out yesterday and it was definitely 1024x600… gonna be a few unhappy people i think…

      • +3

Yeap.. i cancelled my orders.. And its very sneakily done, no emails, nothing..

        • +1

they're definitely gonna damage their brand. wrong move Kogan!

    • +2

      rofl

      • +4

Yeap.. Kogan doesn't have the best reputation around as it is.. This is going to erode that even further.. And that whole bullS$it with the liveprice.. seriously? An incentive to buy early so that they can bait and switch? Surely thats just waving a red flag at the consumers affairs bull…

        • +2

yes… i hope they get lots of complaints to consumer affairs.

  • +3

  • Just bought one.
I already have the iPad but could not resist the price for a tab and a phone for only a $149.
Liverpool DSE westfield have one more left. Now my wife doesn't have to share my iPad with me :)

  • Just got an email from kogan saying that the screen has now changed.. Why do I get the feeling that they've been watching this thread lol

  • correct me if i'm wrong, but history is repeating itself! it seems Mr Kogan is in the habit of downgrading his popular items;remember a while back he listed that cheap smartphone initially for like $199 and then made excuses about jacking it up to $299?! it's NOT FUNNY ANYMORE Mr Ruslan!
ps few weeks ago i got a cortex A8 tablet with android 2.2/gps etc for 60 bucks and i was going to buy the kogan tablet, but not anymore! here's another lost customer

  • Well I am going to go buy one of these today… I hope the unlock works for my VODA sim as the 3GB of data expires in 3 months and it seems very pricey to get more.

  • saw the last unit in DSE North sydney - tempted to buy one.

Does the GPS need the data plan?

    • +1

Technically no, because I was using it at home via wifi (to get the maps) and I think GPS can work on it's own. However you do need to get the maps and I am not sure if google maps allows you to store locally so you can use it away from wifi as such.

      • does it mean if I downloaded the maps thru my wifi at home - will it give the turn to turn gps?

Does it work without insert the sim card ?

        • I am not sure if you can download and store the maps locally or not, certainly with google navigation. Maybe a different GPS app will? The GPS itself does not need data. I just tried it on mine, turned off all data availability, navigation comes up, GPS "locks in" but it then sits there on the gathering driving directions step after I put in a destination (that I had already been to). Hope this helps.

I recently sold my iPad 32gb (1st Gen) on eBay for $500 only last week and seeing this tab at $149 - with a 3G card built in, I thought I would give it a punt. After reading OzBargain this morning, I visited a DickSmiths and picked one up.

I have been very impressed with this tab considering the price. Screen is quite responsive. OS is quite fast. It has bluetooth, wifi & 3G. I havent given it a proper workout however seen as I only used my iPad for web-browsing and Twitter in front of the TV at home, this is by far a more value for $ purchase.

  • +1

The screen is way better than I thought it would be.. been playing with mine all day and very happy with it… only downside so far is some of the Optus branding and apps, not sure I can get rid fo them without installing a new ROM which I did not want to muck around with. Otherwise it works as well as my HTC phone, just bigger which is what I wanted for reading epub's, facebook and gmail. very happy… thankyou OP.

  • BTW BigW also selling for $149 if stock running low at DSE or Optus. http://www.bigw.com.au/electronics/mobile-phones-internet/mo…

  • According to a CNET review, this thing doesn't have Flash support. Does this mean i can't view and use the facebook games, like fairyland garden, farmville, etc?
My mum wants something like this, for twitter, fairyland garden, and general browsing.
Does no flash support mean not possible?

    • +1

Does this mean i can't view and use the facebook games, like fairyland garden, farmville, etc?

Yes, ZTE were clearly smart enough to build in a 'lame filter' to protect you from yourself!!! :p

    • No Flash. It's common to many tablets, Flash requires a certain generation of processor, which tends not to be in such Tablets. So its not OS dependent, its lower level than that.

Now maybe Adobe would get their finger out and produce a version for lower level processors - but they show no signs at the moment.

This isn't considered much of a loss.

Twitter is still possible, as is general browsing, etc.

      • My mobile phone has got Flash (Nokia N8). It doesn't run all flash websites. The specs say:-
"Flash Lite 4.0. Flash Lite 4 will support a majority of Flash Player 10.1 content"
"Video codecs and formats. Streaming: Flash Lite 4 (Flash 10 compatibility for video"

So don't know why a tablet couldn't have it. Does it not have any variant of Flash, like Flash Lite?

        • Ahh thanks , downloading flash lite for the tab now see if it can play flash with that.

  • just got mine today the price on the tag was $249 had to tell the worker about the webite price still waiting for it to charge hope it' good

  • This apparently has been reduced to 129 (target) and will drop to 99, still happy at 149, and now its unlocked thanks to the link in this post

Thes best place to buy is

    DSE
    Big W
    Target

target is going for 129.00 in some stores!

    • wow that's an awesome price! i guess it faces strong competition with the recent price drop of the galaxy tab.

      • oops target has the t tab for 129

        • which target has this price?

  • I wonder when it'll drop to $99. I feel like a tab but I already have an Android phone (with 4" LCD). With a screen 3" larger and the CPU slower by 40%, I still struggle to spend $149 on this tab.

  • JakDac
Now you can update to Froyo 2.2

  • +1

Link to official ZTE Australia Froyo 2.2 update
    http://www.zte.com.au/optus/V9.htm

  • Picked myself up one today, although Harvey Norman wouldn't discount for me lower than the $149.

Amazing price for a pretty decent unit!

Even just as a large GPS (that also does music, web browser, apps, FM radio, 3G internet, camera, phone!)

    alll good !
