  • How is the reliability on these 3TB drives?

The 3TB drives Seagate were pumping out a few years back were notoriously bad; I had mine die on me 3 years into its lifespan…

    • Wd reds are similar price

I remember those, I had three fail on me within 2 years. From my own experience, the Ironwolf branded ones seem to be fine, I run these and WD reds. I lean towards paying the slight premium for reds, but they all have 3 year warranty.

Warranty means nothing unless they cover the cost of data recovery on dead drives.

        • You should have backups, pay for the pro version if you want that. Warranty is a totally separate issue.

I just had my WD black die after 10 years. left PC on most of the day/night running with all power saving on HD turned off. Not sure if that's good mileage or not. Got another 3 WD blacks about same age too. Tried changing the controller with one from a working drive, and windows did't even recognise the drive. Tried minitool to recover the partition but its far gone. Luckily I backed up not long ago. Its a drive i use for photos.
Where are the ebay discounts when you need them!

My seagate 3tb died in 3 years

Gee. A consumer drive being run nearly 24/7 with all of the power saving turned off lasting 10 years. That's great mileage compared to some of the newer drives.

      • and here I thought I was always doing the drive a favour by disabling the feature so prevent it from stopping and starting all the time. I would have read it on one of those optimise PC articles many many years ago. Still got 3 WD blacks going 2009 and 2010. So im guessing they will go any time soon too

4-5 years 24/7 operation is probably pushing it for any drive from the past few years. Older drives used to last longer without data loss because the bit density was so much lower. Mechanically, the motor bearings will eventually fail or the heads will collide with the disk surface at some point.

  • The 8TB is probably the sweet spot. It ends up being around $304 shipped.

It's cheaper than shucking the Amazon shipped WD 3.5" disk enclosures.
