Controller Trade Weekend @ EB Games | Increased Trade Value - DualShock 3 from $23, DualShock 4 from $40

1740

Targeted to EB World Members. Can't find it on their site so heres a screenshot of my email.
I'm only level 2, but we all know a friend on level 4 who can come through.

This weekend only EB are buying back old controllers to spend on anything in-store.

Xbox 360 Controller gets $18 + Level Bonus
PS3 Dualshock 3 Controller gets $23 + Level Bonus
Joy-Con Controller gets $35 + Level Bonus
Xbox One Controller gets $40 + Level Bonus
PS4 Dualshock 4 gets $40 + Level Bonus

Pretty good price for my old PS3 controllers just sitting here doing nothing for the past 5 years.

Update
For those wondering trade credit can be recieved via gift card. Eb has a pretty chill trade policy. They charge refurb fee only If there's visible physical damage or you have sticky buttons. Anyway dropped in with 2x DS4 and 1x DS3… Cashed out $113.30. Probably hold off spending until the next controller sales

      You threw out PS4 controllers?

      • +5

        He means ps3 and 4 ps3 controllers

        • freoleo is correct. 4 x PS3 controllers, and a PS3

    • +3

Wtf?! You threw out current gen controllers?

Where do you live. I wanna go through your bin and see what else is there lol

      • Ps3 is previous Gen not current gen

        • +4

          Oh I thought he said ps3 and 4 controllers….so I took it as ps4

    • +2

Should have donated to Salvo or your local church so they can donate them on to those third world countries don't even have a ps2

    • +1

I'm sure a lot of Ozbargainers would've gladly taken it of your hand or even given you money for it. There are a few PS3 exclusives I want to play personally.

  • I’ve got an original Xbox one controller with the clicking right stick manufacturing fault, would they take that?

    • Yes

  • Do you have to provide PS4 charging cable as well or just the controller?

    • +1

Cable came with console. So just controller

  • Nice promo, going to see what I can fetch for my old controllers.

OK need to go and look for my old controllers.

There should be a few laying around the house.

  • I have to take some games in to trade as I have a bonus 50% trade voucher for my birthday. Would I get the bonus 50% on controllers also?

    • From the email:

Controller trade weekend: EB Trade policy applies. Value shown is for official first party wireless controllers only. Controller must be in resalable condition. Not to be combined with any other offer except EB World. Offer only valid 12-13 January 2019. See staff for details.

    • I will find out tomorrow as I will be using my wife's birthday bonus tomorrow lol

      • I tried my birthday bonus on the controllers I traded in today and it's not allowed.

    • pretty sure birthday bonus is only for games and yeah cant combine deals anyway

  • +3
    • Played a bit this morning on the One X looks promising might trade a few PS3 controllers and Xbox 360 controllers towards it since there not getting used. :/

      • +1

        That's a good idea!

I was so busy today just found out now. Downloading …8gb shouldn't take too long

  • Well that's not too bad.

I have roughly $110 worth of old, dusty, unused 360/PS3 controllers and that's not even including the Day One 2013 XB1 controller which has squeaky triggers and stick drift. Nowadays that may even be considered a feature!

    • I'm hanging on to my Day One 2013 controller. I just traded in my white and black standard ones.

  • Does anyone know if I have to give them the USB cable too for my PS4 controller?

    • Nawh

  • +4

Do the PS3 controllers need to be dual shock? Or can they be the older sixaxis ones?

    • +3

Sixaxis have a base value of $8 according to my local EB.

  • Do they have to be wireless 360 controllers?

    • Yep, "Official first party wireless controllers".

      • hmm i got a few but they have died with the original batteries and i now have the AA covers but after market. would that be ok?

        • I have a pristine 360 controller, which stopped working when the provided batteries leaked.

Will they test the controller before accepting it?

Or does anyone know where I can source an original PCB for a wireless 360 controller?

    • Yes

  • if anyone was wondering what level 4 perks was
    https://imgur.com/gallery/u3ncoO7

    • +1

      ummm.. that tells us nothing

      • it looks the same trade in value. no idea what a level 4 bonus is…

  • Didn't they do this before but it was better value last time?
Red controllers for $19 with trade in it was

    • JB HI fi regularly have controllers at $59. So seems about the same to me

      • -2

This is EB not JB. you can't use the EB credit at JB…

Cheapest controller available at EB is $90 so will still cost you about $40 for a new controller, as opposed to the previous deal where you get it for $19

    • +1

Previously it was. Better trade value but you were forced to put it toward a replacement preorder controller.

This is trade bonus for store credit dude.

  • $40 for a DS4 is actually a good deal considering
PS4 controllers were on sale two years in a row for $49 for the days of play promotion.
Good chance for it to return again this year.

    • Which you think is the worst deal?

    • +1

Exactly my thinking. I ended up getting $44 for my V1, looking to trade up to a V2 for Days of Play

  • So if i trade in my only DS4, which i never use.
When it comes to trading the console with one of those deals EB often does to get a better model.
Do they ask for the controller with the console?

    Thank you.

    • It must include the controller.

Your console needs to be an Australian model, in working condition and not be modified. Your console must not be banned from the PlayStation Network. Below are the consoles we trade:
      PlayStation 4 500GB and 1TB, PlayStation 4 Slim 500GB and 1TB, and PlayStation 4 Pro 1TB.

To trade a complete console, it also needs to include:

      1 x PS4 Dualshock Controller
      1 x USB charge cable
      1 x HDMI cable
      1 x Power cable

      https://ebgames.com.au/trade-and-save/what-can-I-trade#plays…

      • Thanks

        • You can actually trade in your console without a controller but they do subtract the trade in value of the controller at the time if you do not have one.

  • I didnt get this email. Can I avail this offer?

    • You need to become an EB World member, which is free and only takes a few minutes in-store.

Prices and offers displayed in this email are only available for EB World members residing in Australia.

      • Thanks. I am a level 2 member, but didnt get that email and wondering it was targeted as the links states that.

  • Can the trade in credit be used toward something that is price matched?

    • Yes

    • Yeah, I usually get credit put on a gift card and price match in a different transaction.

  • Times like this I regret not bothering putting my in store and ebay purchases on my ebworld (I had too many account issues due to staff doing typos, I had multiple accounts that they never could look up when required). I'm probably level 1 but would have been way higher

I have some ps3 controllers to get rid of, they're all unused due to my hardware fetish

    • Call EB support. They can help you with missing points. You also get some points for completing your profile and install the EB World app (I think it is only available on iOS at the moment). Also, do check your membership, EB gave members 200 carrots for Christmas 2018.

Getting to level 2 isn't difficult (1200 points). Special deals are good because you get more points / carrots and that will help. Last year's V-Bucks promotion was good for accumulating points any eligible game gets a boost to $20 equivalent (so 40 points + points for the Xbox or PS4 gift card + any bonus points if the game had real trade in value above $5).

  • So let me get this right, I can trade in my old PS4 controller and get $40 store credit, and bonus extra if you're level 2 or above member?

  • How much extra member bonus are we talking about? I never really buy games from EB, usually online or gumtree..if good bonus, don't mind split 50/50 at Livingstone EB tomorrow. PM me

  • how much would they give for a PS3 console I wonder? Haha..not much point trade in controller if the console still there…

    • +2

You can use your PS4 controller on your PS3 with the USB cable. So you could keep the console if you really wanted to.

      • ah ..perfecto! forgot that! thanks!

  • I wonder if Joy-Con Controller is for each or a pair.

    • -3

      Pair

    • +4

Maybe call them and ask.. To be fair, their picture only shows 1 joycon, and you can technically grt joycon as singular rather than pairs. For thst trade value, you'd almost say its each

    • +2

It will be each. You can sell them individually.

    • +2

Pretty sure it is each, Nintendo controllers have better resale value.

I am tempted to trade in my 2 yellow Joycons ($84 with Level 4) and price match Big W to get the green and pink Joycons for $99. Always regretted settling for the yellow colour.

      • This is what I'm considering too. I have the greys and regret not getting a coloured one. I'm kinda holding for the see through blue ones to match my gameboy colour and N64 though.

    • +1

This price is for a single Joy-Con controller. :)

      https://twitter.com/EBGamesAus/status/1083883225443958784

  • I understand this deal is only applicable to first party controllers, but in general do EB accept trade-ins for 3rd party controllers? I've got a few I wouldn't mind parting ways with.

    • +1

You can trade them in, but you won't get the same deal.

  • +1

Just a reminder to check for the dodgy "refurb" charge.

I traded in 2 Xbox One controllers in pristine condition. Didn't think to check the receipt until I got home and noticed they had stuck a $3 refurb charge on each controller. Naturally, like their "disc refurb" charge the store person didn't mention that at the time of the transaction.

    • Can I ask why the neg?

    • +1

traded my dual shock controller that had the rubber worn out and got the refurb charge $3 which is fair enough. But if the controllers are pristine condition thats pretty shitty of them.

      • That's what I thought too. Fair enough if they needed fixing up but they were both almost brand new.

I supposed was a bit annoyed because i bought a used 360 console from them a couple of years ago and the controller was filthy and grungy. Console wasn't much better.

        Cheers :)

    • I didn't get charged that refurb charge. Traded 2 reasonable condition DS4 controllers and some games I had sitting around. Ended up with $150 credit so pretty happy. The refurb charge may be differing for different stores. I went to the Penrith store.

      • Yep, one of the things that annoys me with EB is that their policy seems to differ between stores and employees.

    • The one I went to says the $3 refurb charge applies to all hardware trade. Others in this thread have mentioned that it only applies when your stuff is in bad nick so it seems there isn’t a clear cut policy.
My controllers were in very good working condition (no damage, no worn buttons or thumbstick, I even wet wiped them beforehand) and staff didn’t even test it, told me the final trade in value and only explain the $3 charge when questioned.

      • Wow that's messed up. It's probably a store initiative to make more money. There must be a store incentive to sell as many refurb fees. You should take it up with HO.. Its only $3 realistically, but it all adds up.

        • +1

It’s $9 less for the 3 that I traded in, not the end of the world but they should really be more transparent about that.
Firstly, if they advertised $X trade in value but there is a compulsory $Y charged on each trade then the advertised value is hardly true.
Second is they need to advise customers up front before the trade, instead of carry on like normal and only explain it when they get caught out.
All in all, be vigilant, especially when trading or buying multiple items (I have accidentally paid $5 “game insurance” in the past, could have been my fault for not hearing them mentioning it), check your reciept for any surprise charges.

    • +1

Maybe you should start a new poll thread and see how many people were charged refurb and in what condition… It seems they are being dodgy. $3 isn't much for me and I wasn't charged for my 2 DS4 and 1 DS3, but I'd imagine $3 would be heaps for that little kid who is trying to pick up a new game.

      • Also how many people were charged without even realising it.

  • Will they accept wired 360 controller?

    • No, it's wireless only.

      • sad

  • What does the 'level bonus' do?

    • +1

You can get extra trade credit depending on what EB World membership level you are - level 2 gets you an extra 10%, level 3 gets you 15% and level 4 gets you 20%.

      • Cool, thanks for the info. I never really paid attention, nor have staff reminded me. Im level 3 I think.

  • Just a heads up; check the value of your controller on CEX before trading in to EB. Dual Shock 3s tend to vary between $20-$40 store credit depending on the colour. DS4s are $45+
Obviously only applies to you if CEX is convenient and you have a use for their store credit.
    Check value here: https://au.webuy.com

    • closest CEX store is 880km away :)

But i now have $85 credit at local EB for when controllers go on special again
I had a refurb charge on 1 DS4 due to missing rubber on left joystick

      • How much did they dock you for the stick rubber refurb? I've also got one of those dodgy first batch controllers.

        • +1

          $3 less credit

  • Can I trade in for another item then go to another store for cash refund?

    • +1

no you only get cash refund if you paid in cash

    • +1

In some states, you can ask for the cash trade in price. The cash trade in price will be lower than the store credit amount.
One of the OZBers mentioned in another deal that getting cash for trade-in is no longer allowed in NSW stores (unsure whether that's still the case).

You could use the store credit to purchase Microsoft, Sony, Apple (iTunes/AppStore), Google gift card(s) instead.

  • Should be able to store the credit for later?

Might consider getting a Switch if a better deal popped up.

    • +1

Should be able to store the credit for later?

Yep. Traded some games around June last year and used my credit in the last week or two.
