Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread 2019

Continued from the same feedback thread of 2018. This post will be used for general feedback in 2019. Please make any suggestions for new features, bugs, things you'd like to see changed or anything else. Please check this wiki page as your suggestion may already have been mentioned.

The majority of things you see, as well as policies on OzBargain were implemented based on user feedback. Please see the Site & Guideline Updates Announcement Thread to keep up to date with the changes/features that we implement as they are added.

    • Make all the internet dark mode with an extension?

    • Windows 10 has that mode already

    • I need a mode that isnt so orange. WHen it's open at work everyone knows I'm OzBargaining. What about a blue mode! Can I edit a CSS or something? :P

    • soo much better on the eyes, ive changed everything I have to a dark mode where available.

Also when on Mobile, when commenting the orange colour that indicates your comment along the line where your name, date, time etc
the orange line makes it really hard to read anything within that line, that could also be changed.

    • searching for bargains at 3am

but there's only like 10 deals posted through the night

      • 10 more opportunities to bargain!

  • Can I suggest as well as having a single sticky "Insufficient Quantity Deals" topic in the general discussion forum, that ozb has one in each category forum? I think users interested in a particular category (eg Home and Garden) are unlikely to ever find the low quantity topic in the general area.

  • Merged from Suggestion: Deal Vote Numbers Should Be Visible in Search Results Page

Suggestion:Vote numbers should be visible in search results

Currently when you search for something the most important thing we look for is not displayed in the results.

Please see if this can be changed

    • It already is when you search a specified product or brand/store. If you’re just searching words and not clicking on the drop down item then that’s when it doesn’t show.

    • You look at the vote numbers? Weird, dude, you can keep that 'we' to yourself.

    • I'm searching on mobile for deals and the votes definitely don't show up in the results

  • Suggestion: Highlighted comments
My suggestion is to have the most relevant comments highlighted by a power user/op/mod.
Makes it easy for the people that dont want to wade through the joke posts etc to get the key info about a deal.

    • Highlighted comment are already implemented on OzBargain (example here), but can only be set by moderator.

      • Oh cool. didn't even realise there were pinned comments. Thanks

  • +1

Has the OzBargain site turned into Dick Smith, or is it just my computer colour scheme which has changed?

  • Hey, can we have the poster of threads be identified in some way when they post/reply to a comment?

    • Comments from the Original Poster can be identified by the box

      • Oh i didnt know that. It's so subtle.

Could I suggest an OP tag next to the user name instead?

  • Merged from Hope OzBargain Could Support Keyboard Shortcuts Like Ctrl+Enter to Submit

I think this could be handy,
Ctrl+Enter is kind of universal in a lot of places for submitting action

    cheers

  • Can we start a subforum for prices paid for vehicles?

The category should be formatted as Automotive > Prices Paid > Model (irrespective of year and variant).

Title format would be PP Make Model Ie. PP - Mercedes A Series would encompass all Mercedes A180 through to the A45.

We can have an admin only to post new threads for the models with a stickied thread for suggested models…. Ie. Someone requesting to post price paid for an obscure model.

The post format would include a line for each variant and verified price for each state. The verified price would be linked a photograph of an invoice or advertised deal. This would be compiled by the power user/admin based on comments.

If a new MY is released, then the old MY is replaced. Users would still be able to find the historical price but will have to look through the comments.

We could start with the super common models
Toyota - Yaris, Corolla, Camry, Rav4, Hilux
    Honda - Civic, Accord
    Mazda - 2,3, CX3, CX5
    Hyundai - i20, i30
    Ford - Focus, Ranger
    Mitsubishi - Triton
    VW - Golf, Tiguan

It's a fairly long list but maybe the top 25 passenger cars and top 5 utes.

It may fire up faster than projected as many automotive forums will link into OzBargain for the list and may even draw new users to post their price paid.

    Happy to bounce ideas.

    • Different states - different stamp duty figures
Some people qualify for fleet discounts, some don't
Some don't realise the 'true' figure they paid for a car when a trade-in is involved.
Demo vs new. Used vehicles listed as demo.

And then the whole 'fact vs fiction'. If someone just says what price they paid for it, without proof, because it's the internet and they don't have to prove anything.

      • Different states - different stamp duty figures

I've got that covered. It needs to have state variation and not merely price ex. Stamp duty.

        the whole 'fact vs fiction'.

Also covered. Needs to be verified with a photo. Of course, doctored photos exist hence it should be posted as a comment so members can scrutinize for themselves and the practiced eye can call out fakes.

Demo vs new. Used vehicles listed as demo.

Prices should strictly only be for new vehicles. There are sufficient variables to consider as is.

        • Needs to be verified with a photo.

Yeah no one will bother getting that far

  • can't see the profile button on the right top corner on my mobile chrome browser. i logged out and logged back in.

    • Not sure what you mean, can you do a screenshot?

  • WHAT SHOULD I BUY

How can I turn off this please?

  • what about an email feature that can be customised for some threshold x above positive votes.
I would set it up for popular deals above 100 votes, things that might have flown under the radar for deals that reached the front page

  • Similar to previous comment but can we be able to change how many votes make it to our own front page?
I know the current is 20+ votes unless there hasn't been a 20+ for a while then the rules relax. Can we set our own threshold so we can see 10+?

    • Front Page Threshold can be changed in the settings.

My Account -> Edit -> Deals -> Toggle the Minimum Votes Slider.

      • Cheers!

/e oh wow, been on OzB for years and had no idea I could have this much control. So good!

  • I noticed an issue with the search; when I search on something from the "deals" page, it filters on type "deals", which is good. But if I then use the dropdown to filter on type "forum topics", it does not actually change the filter. The results stay the same, and the "type:ozbdeal" stays there. The parameter for 't' in the URL changes as expected, but seems to be ignored. The only filter that works is "non expired". Even if picking "classified", I get results for "deals".

If I start searching from the forums page, I can change the filter, though the "type:xxxx" does not change even if the results do. In the URL, the parameter for 't' changes as expected too.

    • We actually have plans to fix that, as the problem is there due to a mix of search keywords (type:forum) and URL query string (?t=f).

  • This user has 17 comments, but none shown when viewing their profile?

It would be good to be able to save forum posts for future reference. Right now, have to bookmark the entire article and search later on.

    Thanks

You can bookmark specific comments as well if that's what you mean.

Gah, why did I not see this earlier. Thanks

  • Can we get the ban on selling travel credits/flights lifted? In a recent update it was change to not allow this but people are still allowed to advertise wanting to buy them. Many people are surprised by the change and can't understand why we aren't allowed to advertise our unwanted credit or flights

    • Please see the discussions here or here.

  • Anyone having display issues in mobile Safari when we click Deals to bring the drop down menu, the formatting is all messed up.

  • Merged from Collapse comment tree via double clicking on profile picture

I realise this is so insignificant and not even worth a thread but I'm wondering how possible it would be to have another collapse button (similar to what's already available) except it activates from a double click on the profile picture within the thread? It's not the most seamless process to hit the - on every parent comment and a simple double click on the profile picture would speed it up a ton.

As I said, small and insignificant but some threads are a pain to navigate with so many child comments and wanting to go through quickly it would just be easier to click their picture.

Rule no. 1 of Ozbargain is do not suggest improvements.

      • i don't expect this to be approved but i did intend for some dialogue. they're all pretty good here.

      • This is entirely wrong. ALWAYS suggest improvements. It's the major pathway to fixing issues and adding new features here.

        • Sorry Neil for posting it as a new thread, I completely missed this sticky.

    • +1

      double click? What's that?

      • +2

pressing your left mouse button twice, or if it's for mobile just a double tap

    • So double clicking will save time over single clicking?

I didn't even realise you could collapse the comments, 95% of my time on OB is reading the comments, why would you want to hide them?

      • As I said in my op, going through large threads with lots of comment chains makes it a lengthy process. I like reading comments too but when you're after a certain conversation or if a comment chain is fairly irrelevant clicking on a tiny square makes it a pain.

It's not a clicking issue, it's more the fact that the button for collapsing is tiny and out of the way.

  • Offer an "Ozbargain Prime" option, for those who want to support the site & want a little bit extra.

It could have additional perks, such as no limits on negative votes.

    • +2

your suggestion was actually this year's april fools, i would say there's little to no chance this is going to ever happen. the team seem fairly adamant they don't want to turn their website into a subscription model, that's why everyone should whitelist this site if you use an adblocker.

  • Merged-post & comments don't trigger any notification for a thread subscribed-to, merged with. It would be useful if something happened there. When no further comments added, specifically in-reply, potential to miss merged content completely.

  • +1

Not sure if this is worthy of a new thread, but I’ve started to notice when on mobile, OzBargain will occasionally ask to see your location.

    Is this a new feature?

    • Most definitely not. I have not seen it myself (not sure whether it's Android or iOS difference) but the only external scripts we are loading are display ads. I'll check with the upstream providers.

Edit: if it happens again, please forward me the ads that's running on the page (image & the click-through URL).

      • Will do.

    Hi mods
Suggesting that you guys run a program similar to this one.

I've been away, trying to catch up on what I may have missed.
Seems like page 50 and older can't be viewed?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals?page=50

    • Answered here:

We have to deliberately set a hard limit on the maximum number of old pages, because in the past we have bots iterating through thousands of pages of past deals.

  • +1

After someone asked me why I would have an issue if OzBargainers were deliberately buying into good deals purely for the purpose of reselling immediately (eg. getting a free pram bassinet), it actually got me thinking as to why I post on OzBargain. Following on from my previous comment > https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/7506371/redir

Basically I think a lot of us, or at least myself, want to share good deals with others. But then my intention is definitely not to facilitate opportunistic individuals who buy out the deal with the intention of reselling it for a profit (and sometimes even PMing people in the comments who missed out). Obviously given the nature of OzBargain there's probably plenty of times when you buy on impulse, but then instead of returning they just resell which happens… but what did irk me was also last time when some people clearly bought out the limited stock of something they had zero intention of using, and tried to flip it immediately, and people in the thread who genuinely needed it missed out and were being targeted by those individuals.

Prob golden rule is if its a price error, or likely to get hammered by the horde (scalpers), don't post it here.
The retailer will get flooded with phonecalls, and likely have to process hundreds (or thousands) of refunds, plus the entitled mongrels will threaten and harass them on social media. Not what ozbargainers should be known for.

      • I guess so. I really did try to think of a pragmatic solution to this whether it be private groups or some kind of status reward for those who contribute regularly but it still results in those who probably needing it the most being disadvantaged some how. Maybe I'll stick to posting really good baby-related deals in respective mothers/fathers groups instead (although that also doesn't really solve the problem either as scalpers could be anywhere…)

On the plus side, at least comments get moderated if scalpers try to resell in the same thread… doesn't stop them from PMing everyone though.

  • I'm sick of seeing 5ubway claims that a thumbnail breaches their copyright.

So can you change it to something else maybe a picture of Jared Fogle ? I'm sure Subway would not claim copyright over his image ?

(I'm joking. but I am really sick of how big companies like Subway treat the little guys)

  • Hi mods
Currently a comment is required if you want to neg a deal. This will show who negged the deal.
When someone negs a comment, the same transparency isn't there. It could be a troll that continues to neg a particular poster's comment.

Is there any reason why the same transparency cannot be extended to comments?

    • My understanding is the logic is this:

Neg votes on deals will sort themselves out - if it is an unfair neg, the community will vote it away. If it is a fair neg, the community will support it.

Transparency on comments does not provide the same result and in fact could lead to more tit for tat (ie. going on a neg war).

    • There was a time that negative votes on comments were visible. This created numerous fights and disputes so we made them not visible to members. They are however visible to moderators.

  • Does anyone view Software deals? I just took a gander and many of them seem to be garbage apps that are either overpriced/useless or can be replaced with free, open-source software that do the job much better.

    • Looking through the Software tags there are heaps of front page deals so a lot of people (obviously not you) consider them to be bargains. That's why we have the choice of not voting :)

  • Competitions; is it possible to keep open longer, the ability for somone to mark that they won a prize?

    eg Tim Tam 3 Wishes
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/459325

I've won an undrawn prize. I Googled to check if it was legitimate, found the thread on OzBargain, and thought it'd be nice to show another OzBargainer won a prize there, even though it's 5 months down the track since it started.

    • If you click "I won" it should open comments back up again, otherwise can always flick through a report to re-open commenting

      And congrats :)

      • Hi Spackbace

I saw options to click on "Seen" and "Entered" but nothing about "Won"

        • Click 'Entered' then it will change to "Won"

          • @spackbace: Ah, fixed that. Got this

Cannot record a win for a competition that has been closed for more than 60 days. If this really needs to be done, please request for the competition to be re-opened for comments via the Talk with a Moderator forum.

  • Is it possible to search for private messages by user? If you're like me and have pages of different people sending messages it can take a while to see if someone actually messaged you.

    • Hi. See the search syntax here. For example to find whether Clear has discussed Eneloop with you, you can search eneloop from:144344.

Alternatively you can go to that person's profile page, click on "list" -> "messages" tab and you'll see all the PM conversation you have with him/her.

      • Of course I've never bothered to click on the "Lists" under someone's profile. Both options are perfect, thank you!

  • Should the "Web Statistics" bit from the Stats page just get deleted, since it's about 12 months old and takes manual updating? Or does neil have some homework to do to add the shortcuts to his monthly stats posts? ;)

    • I should remember to update them after I do the stats monthly. Will do from now on. They've been updated.

  • Will there be an option for Dark Mode?

    • No. See here

  • I've come across full screen ads over the last couple of days which don't seem to self-clear without refreshing the page (Chrome on Android). I understand you've got to 'keep the lights on' but these are a bit much.

Are these here to stay? Or is it a 3rd party ad system overstretching a bit?

    https://imgur.com/gallery/lgHKaZ5

    • Yeah I agree that the 3rd party ads system did overstretch way too much… to the full screen :( I have reported these to the upstream provider. I have specifically requested the ads to stay in their predefined area (mostly 300x250 or 728x90 rectangles), however bad ads implementations such as this do get slipped through every now and then.

      • Thanks for the reply - thought this might be the case.

    • Geez - and these companies wonder why users move to ad blockers.

  • Anyone’s iOS device zooming in/out while browsing/posting comments? Seems to have started since ios13 (I’m using safari)

    • iPad has been terrible since iipad os13.
Auto rotate doesn’t work maybe 20% of the time. Sites zooming badly. Commbank on safari is terrible, zoom in can’t zoom out.

  • Can the OPs name be in a different colour in the comments so we can see the OP replies.

Eg on reddit image here https://imgur.com/a/t1AFH6p
(No idea why it say 18years or over, it’s a screenshot of text)

    • OP's comments are currently highlighted with a box around the comment.

  • How do you delete a saved draft post?

When I create a new deal I see an outdated Draft Post at the top of the page.
