  • A rewards card with no annual fee and a couple of perks?

    What's the catch?

    • The catch is the relatively low amount of bonus points and the fact that it resets your 18 month Amex cc hiatus which hurts if you're a churner.

If you wanted an ongoing Amex with no annual fee then this is decent. Also the fee free Amex Velocity Escape card is alright but not sure if that has a bonus at the moment.

      • but it’s 1 point per dollar spent which is as good as most other cards isn’t it?

i was wondering the same things… sounds too good to be true here. no annual fee with rewards.

        • There's nothing that's too good to be true. Bonus 10k points for this range of cards happens a few times a year so it's nothing special. I applied for the Amex Explorer card which gave 100k Amex Membership Reward points (different to Amex Gateway points which is what this card offers and is worth more than Gateway points), met the minimum spend, cancelled the card, and got the annual fee waived. Having a card like this excludes you from taking advantage of better Amex deals. So while this offer is decent in itself, the opportunity cost is too high for me personally.

You can read about the different types of Amex points here, although you will need to verify what the transfer rates are currently since this article is more than a year old. But the gist is there are different Amex points and they're not all equal.

          • @spiff: Spiff, would you share your tips?
Did you transfer the point out before canceling the card? Where did you transfer the bonus point to? Thanks

            • @aseren: Yes I transferred to Velocity before cancelling the card.

          • @spiff: How did you get the annual fee waived?
