      • +1

        Highpoint in Melbourne

Dont know what there stock level is like.

  • +2

These have usb on-board tech which means you cannot swap out the hdd, fyi.

    • Thanks so much for the info.

I was going to try it blindly and cross my fingers. You saved me the time and money.

Not a bad deal, but do be aware that you can buy USB 3.0 version of 2.5" drives starting from only about $25 more: http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=2.5%22+1tb+…

    • +2

      Don't forget to add shipping.
Cheapest for me seems to be $135 for the Iomega Prestige model.

      So my question is:
Is a USB 3.0 drive worth the extra $35-$40?

      • +3

Most people don't even have USB 3.0 chips in their machine anyway unless its brand new

      • +2

        not worth the extra 35-40

      • Def worth the extra money. The USB 3.0 drives are way quicker transferring data & that's a massive time saver when transferring a couple hundred gig's in the one shot.

        • Not if you don't have a new PC with usb 3.0 - even using a 3.0 drive on a pc with 2.0 you will only get 2.0 speeds

      • +2

If your motherboard doesn't have usb 3.0, you can get a 2 port PCI controller card for around $25 from eBay. If you're regularly transferring hundreds of gigs of data I'd definitely say USB 3.0 is worth the added extra.

      • Depends what you're using it for I suppose. If you're just using it to carry around a stack of music and movies, then USB 2 would probably suffice, but if you're for example using it as a portable Steam drive, then the extra transfer speed would definitely be nice.

    • +1

id much rather usb3 even if just for future proofing, usb2 with 1tb is painful

      • Just so i am sure, can a HDD with usb 3 be compatible with a usb 2 port? I would have thought it does, it just wont benefit from the quicker speed available on the usb 3 but sumone here disagrees with me. Can sumone who's tried this out settle this debate for me?

        • +2

Thats right its compatible with usb 2 but you wont get usb 3 speeds

great deal, what I am wondering about is why do ppl need some much space. I can fit my entire political portfolio docs in my 4GB USB stick in my purse next to my lipsticks.

    • +1

I use them mainly for multimedia files and backing up.

      • +1

Videos.. and HD videos and even 1TB ends up not enough

    • +2

      With 3.8gb to spare.

      Porn.

    • +2

Im sure many of the wiki leaks docs would fill your key quite quickly, but i guess you have no interest in the truth, but just who to protect.

    • Tonnes o porn

    • I managed to completely fill up about 6GB or so worth of USB sticks (had to use more than one since I didn't expect to use up mt whole 4GB one lol) with multimedia work as a student.

  • I've bought this drive back in Christmas at HVN for $98. The drive is a lot shorter than a typical 2.5 inch HDD but much thicker. The transfer rate is a typical 25meg/s write (much faster than USB thumb drive) but slightly slower than 3.5 HDD and mostly limited by the USB2 interface.

Heaps of space, very good for carrying HD videos.

lol my pr0n ratio is sad

its not about the size! :) so they say

Anyone tried if OW will pricematch - 5%? Will make it a great deal then :)

    • +1

I can't seem to find this drive on OW website so I doubt that they sell it.

  • +1

I can't seem to find the case inclusion on the site, am I over looking it?

    • +1

      Same…

Wot are these drives like compared to the WD or Seagate?

      • +4

just the same but samsungs are nicer because they come with a leather pouch and no pre installed software partitions

  • Do these use those stupid usb cables that need two usb ports?

  • Does any one know if the drive has a password protection / encryption?

  • Like mentioned above, the usb controller is soldered to the hard drive hence why you cannot simply swap it out and use it in your laptop.

However, this one here from Iomega will allow you to do just that:

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-ac…

The only problem is, you'll more than likely end up destroying the case since the plastic holders are fairly weak.

Another point worth mentioning in regards to the Iomega is that the hard drive is either a Toshiba or Samsung 12.5mm drive. Most laptops cannot fit the non standard 12.5mm however a few current models such as the DV6-3000, DV7 and the DV6-4000 will with out a problem.

Is this brand reliable? How does this brand compare to others in terms of reliability?

    • +2

      you haven't heard of samsung?

      • +1

Heard. Just curious how reliable Samsung is compared to Seagate and Western Digital.

        • +1

they exploded…i joked…for desktop internal drives samsung happened to be very silent drives, even more silent than seagate and WD. for reliability they are same to seagate and 2nd to WD imo…so if you dont have a samsung drive, you dont have samsung drive. I LOVE APPLE

      • LOL Never HEAD of Samsung FAIL!!!

"LOL Never HEAD of Samsung FAIL!!!"

          Can't spell HEARD. FAIL!!!

    • Earlier Samsung models had issues with dying after 12 months, but the current batches seem good. It's kind of a moot point now anyway, as i believe Seagate have bought out Samsung's drives & manufacturing of them.

  • SOLD OUT at the store i went too :( .. should have called up first to check

    • Still avail at my local. Where does it mention the free leather case? Im bout to checkout & cant see it anywhere.

      • +1

unlike all the other external hard drives ( WD, Seagate )… This samsung one comes with a free leather pouch inside the packaging

  • +1

Don't deal with Good Guy Erina. They have no-refund policy.

  • +1

    This is a good deal:

Thomastown store, VIC has stock still I think they have like 10 left.

Just bought it and it's a really nice little drive. To confirm for those who are in confusion, the drive comes standard with a leather wallet to fit it in (similar to the ones that come with Blackberry Phones).

Very quiet drive, very suitable for my Macbook Air. It's black, but classy.

  • Both Chatswood and Artarmon Stores were out of stock so i went into ARC computers in chatswood and got one of these for $108 bux sooo annoying how they sold out so quick

  • +1

Just picked up two here, in SA they only got given approx 25 per store with a limit of three per customer.

  • I picked one up today, Charged at $94.50 instead which was a bonus (possibly 5% off for paying in cash, not sure). They still had a couple left at the midland WA store. Didn't see any display so I'm guessing that is it.

    • Just realised what PLPC stands for on the receipt, $4.50 off for paying in cash, Nice!

      • pay less pay cash?

    • +1

I did the same thing, except I asked the sales guy if it was less for cash. He said 'no, because it's a sales item'. I had rung them and asked them to hold one for me, so maybe they knew I wasn't leaving without it.

In any case, he left me alone at the register with the cashier girl…..I asked her if it was less for cash….she asked me if I had been told the price - I said I was told $98, less for cash….and she rung it up as $94.50! Winning!

      It's actually 4.59% discount - (4.50 discount / 98 original price) x 100 = % discount

I asked the girl if the discount was 5% (maths in my head at the store) and she said the discounts were already pre-calculated.

      • haha you're dodgy ;D
