    Hi there,

I'm very curious. How are you managing to remain profitable at these prices? Many ISPs have had to increase their plan prices over time or have shut down because of the extremely low margins on their plans - especially since NBN is keeping whole sale costs high. Even if you have been around for 15+ years, this may not mean as much as the broadband environment has changed a lot such that low margin operators have been/ will be struggling.

Mungi was around less than 12 months but they had experienced management. Buzz Telco also went into administration but had been around a while as well.

Are you able to go into further details about what you are doing differently that will give customers confidence that you will be around for the long term?
    Thanks

    • Very good questions. I was with buzz —> Mungi —> Optus

Among the three, buzz was the best, mungi came second, and optus is the worst. I'm planning to move away from optus. Looking at options from ABB , exetel, and tangerine.

      Any thoughts?

The owners of Tangerine also own and run business NBN provider More Telecom (www.moretelecom.com.au). This allows for enhanced bandwidth management between residential and business users. This is a key difference to other non successful residential only providers who struggle to remain profitable in the competitive NBN market place. Hope this helps. In addition NBN Co have recently introduced promotional pricing at wholesale on their NBN100 tier.

      • How much discount are NBN offering if you don't mind answering?

        NBN100 wholesale cost is $65.
So you have $4.90 left per customer to pay for backhaul, international links, customer FoH staff, Network monitoring etc….

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

        • nbn100 bundled price is $65 ex GST, so $71.50 inc GST, plus whatever the cost the wholesaler adds

  • I already have a tangerine service at a 2nd property. If i want to take advantage of this offer for my home address(currently with TPG and FTTP), can i use my referral code from my other service to sign up at my home address?

Also can i confirm that home phone rental and calls is included in this offer? A post above seems to suggest it does but want to confirm first.

    • The pricing detailed here does not include a home phone service. This can be added for an additional $10/mth including all standard calls within Australia.

If the referral code is used for an additional property this should be fine and is within the terms of the referral program.

Rep confused by your post and CC123 post of what's in the CIS here:

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/447723#comment-7113232

        which states local/national calls included,

        • I suspect the CIS he read was the bundle deal, not the NBN plan deal. They are 2 different things.

      • Also if CC123 is incorrect do you have a $0 a month PAYG option home phone service.

      • +3

Was ready to sign up but not if the home phone costs another $10 per month. A bit sneaky as that's not how it came across in the deal….

I was with tangerine NBN 50 plan and left for ABB NBN 50 Plan. I had no problem with Tangerine NBN in speed wise but the $20 off promo finished and ABB was offering $20 off promotion when my tangerine promo is ended. My apartment is FTTP and as long as you are on FTTP, you should get similar speed as it is with ABB.

    • +1

Assuming Tangerine buys enough capacity to match ABB.

    • How do you go about switching ISP? Do you need to cancel with the previous ISP (30 days notice) or it's all taken care of?

      • If you are on FTTP it is possible to have 2 connections so you may need to cancel with your current ISP.

On NBN HFC you need to cancel first because Tangerine cannot port your connection.

If you are on FTTN or ADSL then I think when you change providers your existing connection is cancelled automatically.

  • With tangerine and so far great. But since 6months $20 off is expiring soon. Will need to find some other with same deal.

  • I’ve been with Tangerine for 2 years and have been pretty happy over that time. Their customer service are very accountable and follow things up, which is more than can be said for Telstra.

Don’t forget to use a referral code if you sign up so you get $25 off your first bill.

    • What are the speeds and what's the reliability like?

  • +2

I've been with them for 7 month. No problem so far. GOOD ISP

  • Is 100mbps available for FTTN?

    • Depending on your distance from the node you’ll likely not achieve top speeds on FTTN technology. We don’t charge a speed change fee so it’s easy to move up and down between speed tiers so you can establish which is the best plan for your needs and budget.

  • Very tempted! Aussie is just too expensive now. I am getting low to mid 90s on my 100 FTTN plan with ABB. Would speeds be comparable?

  • Do they do Reverse DNS?

  • +1

When changing from 1 NBN provider to another, what is the period you have no internet for? Or does NBN changeover provide seamless service?

  • +1

Thinking of moving from ABB to this. Even if speeds are slow on the 100 plans, it would still be quicker than the 50 plan I’m on with ABB and for $10 less.

Worst case, just move back to ABB if Tangerine doesn’t have decent speeds. And I’d presume we’d be classed as new customers with ABB again the next time they have a promo.

    • yea, completely agree.

At this price, certainly worth trying if your with ABB and leave if you think its crp to take advantage of the on-going new customer incentives.

  • Signed up. Let's see how the trial goes.

    • how is the trial going?

  • isn't ABB require 30 days notice for cancellation????

    • yes

        https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2770092

seems like a max of 30 days, but has more to do with billing cycle.

my next cycle starts on 8th April so going to call them up tomorrow and report back.

        • called up and there is no 30 day notice thing,

they just suggested I close it on my last billing cycle day.

          • @impoze: Nice to know that they don't require 30 days notice as I am also thinking about signing up to Tangerine. Wondering how long this promotion lasts as my discounted billing period with ABB finishes in about 50 days. Thanks for sharing the information.

  • +1

Offer 90MB+ peak time speed (as I consistently get with ABB) and I'm moving to you

    • I agree with this comment!

  • +2

Cmon…76mbps peak speed…surely that's little underwhelming for an ISP who strive to be different than the shit ISPs like myrepublic or Optus?

  • +1

There is no use going for an NBN100 plan if (like me) your distance from the FTTN node and crappy copper connection to the pillar limits you to about 26/6Mbps. A friend on the same node but <50m from the same pillar I connect to can get 45Mbps.

    • I'm 300m from node ang gets full 45mbps

  • I just paid for another month of Aussie BB but I'd like to switch to this deal, when does it expire?

    • my billing cycle abuot to reset in a few days too,
just saw comment above saying ABB require 30 days…

      • ignore above comment.

You can schedule closer to your last billing date and pre-order with tangerine (just set start date)

  • +1

On the phone with Aussie Broadband about my internet service is out. Waiting time is 56 mins.

  • -4

Wow.. Their speed sure looks crap.. Nowonder the lower price. Buyers beware!

    • Are you a customer ? Or were a customer ?

      • Typical evening speed quoted is a fair indication. 76 on 100 is a fair hit. ABB advertise 90 as their typical evening speed.

  • Can I achieve NBN100 with you guys on a FTTC connection? I’m currently paying the same amount at ABB for NBN50. Surely I’d be better of on the higher tier even if it fluctuates?

  • Hi rep - is it possible to pre-order? NBN coming to my area mid-May.

    • Yes, it's possible to set your preferred start date during your order.

      • hm I just submitted my order and now read I need to give ABB 30 days notice.

how can I update my order start date?

        • ignore this. There is no 30 day notice requirement for Aussie broadband

  • do they still give discount on the nbn fixed $300 new development connection fee for $250?

  • I’m using Tangerine NBN for nearly 1 year now, very happy with speed and price.

    • Hi Batman, glad to hear!

  • +1

Kinda wondering why are all the ozbargainers talking about Aussie BB but none on like Telstra, TPG or Optus. I'm on TPG NBN for almost a year and think they have been pretty reliable in terms of download speeds and latency. Is Aussie BB significantly better compared to other providers (have not tried them before)?

    • Yes, much better

    • They are good because they buy enough cvcs which you pay for in your monthly cost. Depending on your technology, uses and bandwidth you need to weight up the quality vs price.

I was MR for $60pm even with FTTP peak times were often as low as between 10-50 Mbps. ABB is $25 more for only 500GB but is much more consistent but not perfect still. They also send messages for planned downtime and are always offpeak and fixed quickly (few hours). With Fttp and generally casual use id prefer cheaper costs than ABB quality. TPG, telstra, optus, internode/adam should all be similar high quality and prices.

For reference I paid $60 a month for pre-NBN HFC and that was more consistent 115 Mbps with poor upload.

  • Hi Rep, I am with Telstra and using a Smart Cable Modem with Adapter (something like https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/uEUAAOSwC5Rcb1~k/s-l400.webp). Do you know if this modem is NBN/HFC compatible? After I disconnect my Cable, how long does it take to connect to NBN? Thanks!

    • +1

You can order HFC NBN while your cable is active. NBN Co will send a technician to install the NBN HFC NTD (network termination device). You'll then need a router using WAN mode to connect to the NBN NTD. From the looks of it, that cable modem will not be suitable. You may want to check if it can connect using WAN and a PPPoE connection type. It seems to be specific Telstra Cable device.

      • thanks! so you mean I can actually keep my Cable activate while installing HFC?

  • When does this promo end ? Can I preorder ? My area ready for service 1 June so it’s not live yet but wondering if I can still take advantage.

  • Just switched over to NBN100 from NBN50. Easy to switch over. Customer service was super helpful and i was able to do it through the live chat. Currently getting 84 down and 34 upload

    • Great to hear TastyJacks! That's what we like to hear ;)

  • Can anyone report there current speeds on the 100/40 plan from Tangerine? I'm currently with Aussie Broadband on the 100/40 tier and typically get 98mbs down 39mbs up. Just don't know if it's worth switching for a $20 per month saving?

    • See above

      • Hey rep
I think my connection (FTTP) is setup. But I haven't received any emails from Tangerine regarding router and port changes i have to make to get the internet going. I tried the Customer service chat on your website but there was a big wait.

        • Hey mate, looks like it is the username and password you used to setup/create the order online.
          https://www.tangerinetelecom.com.au/help/what-settings-are-r…

See this link for the detail, in short:
Authentication: via ISP Username, ISP Password (same as creation user/pass)
          Encapsulation : PPPoE
          VLAN ID Settings: NIL/Disabled

          • @shadimar69: I haven't received username and Password yet.

            • @carlJack: How did you create your account then? I had to pick a username and password to create the account online when I signed up. Its the same deets.

              • @shadimar69: Is it really ? So username is basically your email id isn't it? I didn't know. When I contacted tangerine They just told me that an email with all the details will be sent within 24 hours.I guess I will try that username and password once I go home. Their Customer service hasn't really impressed me so far.

              • @shadimar69: Just received the email.Username and password for pppoe are different to Tangerine account login.

                • @carlJack: I stand erected. ;)
I preordered mine to start on 26/04/2019 so I am still waiting on username and password myself then.
Appreciate you going through the pain to make my life slightly easier. :)
                  Thank you!

                  • @shadimar69: aah.. ok. After your NBN is activated you will receive an email from provisioning team with all details.

                    • @carlJack: Sweet as mate. ;) Let us know how your speeds are.

I am currently FTTN, but building a new place to get FTTP. So a good test of an FTTP install would be nice to see. I am also curious if they use CGNAT, and how their international routing will be, being a VOCUS backend.

Hope all goes well for you mate.

From the time i've been with these guys, i'd be happy to get a slightly reduced speed than what you are getting to save $20 a month. Best thing is that i can vouch for their customer support. Super easy to get issues solved.

      • +1

Thanks I did just sign up with them; I figure they have the 14 day guarantee and worst case I switch back to Auusie. Thanks for your reply

        • +1

Just an update after migrating to Tangerine from Aussie Broadband. Getting simular speeds but still getting around 90mbps down and 38mbps up (FTTP) and around 80mps down in peak. Customer support was good setting up my modem as they use PPPOE authentication. Only been with them for one day but so far I would recommend them.

          • @LJV81: How are you finding them now?

            • @serpserpserp: @serpserpserp Absolutely happy I made the switch! Just did another speedtest prior to this reply and got 92.6mbps down and 36.8mbps up and I haven't noticed any dropouts since being with them.

              • @LJV81: IMO these kind of speeds are completely acceptable for the cost. I only wish that gigabit speeds come down to this cost sooner, rather than later.

                Thanks for the speed/feedback! :)

                • @shadimar69: @shadimar69 Yes I'm happy to loose a little mbps for the cost saving! 👍

  • +1

What about calling features in this NBN100 plan for all Australian calls including mobile phone calls and unlimited international destination calls for landlines and mobiles please? Thank you.

    • Seriously, what NBN plans has unlimited international calling for both landlines and mobiles?

  • Does anyone know if these guys use CGNAT? Or if I will have any issues with port forwarding?

  • +1

OP: is there somewhere on your site that explains the difference between your standard and premium modem options?

  • Local support?

  • How long is this running for? Thinking about ditching Aussie BB but I'm on the $20 a month off for another 4 months.

  • can anyone suggest how to setup huawei hg658? I got it from TPG but they said it's not locked. I did the configuration but no internet.

  • do you guys have a local pop in brisbane?

  • If my area has FTTC and I wanted to use phones as well ( I guess Voip), then what hardware do i need? The NBN will provide the modem for FTTC from what i understand. Does that also come with the Voip stuff? AS I have plenty of good WIFI routers.

These are the routers i have :- Asus RT68U router , Netgear Nighthawk R8000 X6 router, ASUS RT66U as well as TP link Archer D7 and a cheapy TP link adsl Modem / router (8960 i think). I also recently got a ASUS DSL-AC68U VDSL/DSL/NBN modem router (But I am using that for NBN FTTN) and a couple of ASUS RT-AC87U.

  • What is your NBN FTTN 50/20 unlimited plan pricing like with promotion and without and what bundling with home phone plans do you offer?

  • Just a warning, They throttle torrents. I can only download at about 20% of the speeds as compared to AussieBB.

    • Are they allowed to do that without informing people because that would be totally illegal? And in this day and age do ISPs still do dumb crap like that?
