Before all you resolution Nazis start crying about the resolution(1366 * 768), on 13.3 it is absolutely fine!

Don't think these have bluetooth, which would be a deal breaker for me.

    • i agree - no blue tooth is a real shame
(are the usb port 2.0 or 3.0)
      otherwise i nice little setup

      • +2

I have one of these and the battery life is great - just using word + casual browsing, the laptop lasts 9 hrs on power save with no problems, on high performance that goes down to 4-5 hours. USB 2.0 though.

And if I was taking up this deal I'd go for the external DVD-RW as the bonus, sometimes having a drive just comes in handy, it was really painful having to create ISOs for some of my software so that I can mount and install it on this laptop.

*Edit to my comment above: I've since noticed that this is the i3 version, the one I have is the i5 version. Also given that this is the i3 version you may be better off shopping around a bit if the bonuses don't sound appealing. Harvey Norman during that 30% off computer sale had the i5 version of the laptop (i5 480M, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 12MTH Warranty) for $699, and clive peeters is still doing 30% off computers AFAIK so might be worth asking if they sell it.

      • I thought it did have at least one USB 3.0 port?

I bought this not long ago for about $900, so good deal with the dvd writer.

we got some USB Bluetooth micro dongle for $5, this one very small you can just plug and forget.

  • how about a deal on the u36 :D, nice price for the u31 though.

    • +1

please contact us [email protected], we will be able to do something for you

    • u36 looks nice but it's not worth the premium over this one I don't think. this one is fantastically priced, wish i had a bit more money… Although a dedicated video card makes a lot of difference so maybe I'm wrong.

  • +1

    It is 3 x USB 2.0. No usb3 ports.

  • 8 GB RAM, wow.
No bluetooth means no wireless card?

    • +2

      It comes with Wireless-N 802.11n/g/b

  • I thought the u31f only had 4gb ram…is this an upgrade performed by onlinecomputer?

  • Really good price for 13" up to 10 hrs batt ( not sure with full load)

    • +1

      fyi,
this one comes with high capacity 8-cells battery 5600 mAh 83 Whrs
      not 6 cells: 4400 mAh 47 Whrs

  • Okay, potentially a nice deal. I was looking at getting one of these. BUT:

    1. 8 GB of RAM sounds nice, but does this PC have a 64-bit compatible CPU and is it supplied with a 64bit version of Windows 7?

    2. In the photo the computer has a Japanese-language keyboard. I lived in Japan for a long time and I NEVER got used to using a J. keyboard; is this a stock photo (and the actual machine has an Australian keyboard) or is this an import model with an overseas keyboard?

    3. Have you got any in silver? :-)

    • +1
      1. Yes - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-BIT
      2. English keyboard, this is Australian model, we don't sell import model :) we are one of Asus Premium partner
      3. only Black available (brushed aluminium)
      • +1

You get my + then. And possibly my money too when I get paid on Friday ;-)

I just have one question. Why do you need an i3 with 8GB RAM? Are you going to sell the other 4GB to someone else? I personally don't think 8GB is necessary for a laptop unless you use it for gaming or 3D work. But an old i3 CPU and no graphics card is obviously too weak for these purposes.

      • How about:

        • lotsa browser tabs (and/or windows) open at same time
        • lotsa big (low-CPU-demand) app's open at same time
        • a few big-cache app's open, with other app's at same time

        etc.

Oh, and if no indep graphics card RAM, then some of 8GB goes for shared graphics use.

        Am I forgetting anything?

        PS Still, I agree: i3 is small/old… but…

could its power req'ts be lower than an i5's
…to make it the better choice, eg,
if you want long battery life?

        • 8GB RAM will improve the performance significantly if you run multiple application. I just check my Task Manager and my computer usage of physical memory already around 6GB.

whats so gd about this notebook?
i3? no graphics card.. no bluetooth..

    its thin.. but its 13"!!
    longer battery life? 8gb ram?

    • +3

Gee, if only people wanted a laptop that was reasonably powerful whilst maintaining portability, like uni students…

    • -2

      for 200 more u get i7 and graphics card…

      y did i get neg…

      • Did you read Ambiguous' reply?

Not all notebooks are for gaming or CAD work. Some are for portability. This one is for portability. The one you linked is not.

  • +1

online computers have listed this laptops webcam as 2MP whereas ASUS official site says 0.3MP

    • +1

      Not enough reason to neg.

      • +1

It's a matter of trust from whom you are buying a laptop.
Still, I will remove the negative vote.

  • +1

Poster please confirm the processor. Is it i3 or i5? never seen an Australian version with an i3.

  • +1

    Intel graphics - I'm out

    • Hence, the battery life.

But even though one of the early posts says 9 hours, given the manufacturer says 10… I find it hard to believe.

My "8 hour" 13.3" laptop is 3.5 hours (when battery was brand new), intel graphics included. I'm inclined to divide every manufacturer battery claim by 2.

Noted the rep says this has an 8 cell battery though = win

      • many of the 13" laptop uses 4-cells or even 2-cells to keep the weight down and cheaper. In addition, these units not design for longer battery life

  • +1

U36 is a completely different beast. U31F is decent for a student laptop, provided you are not planning to do much gaming or run graphic intensive applications on it. Also, note that Asus will be refreshing the entire U-series laptop with 2nd generation iCore processors. The 2nd generation CPUs provide 15 - 30% more processing power at the same watt usage.

  • 8GB RAM? Man.. this notebook is massive.. plus the free DVD burners… I am going to take one for my sis… :)
