  • Guys.
I'm actually seriously considering using this as as a short-term internet replacement for home.

What range (distance) can you get with your old phone, for WiFi?

Also, we use approximately 150GB per month, so we'd be doing this weekly. Isn't there a block after activating more than 5 Sims per person?

    Thanks

    • Use a pocket wifi instead of a phone.

    • What range (distance) can you get with your old phone, for WiFi?

Varies based on the phone and your house - my 6s reaches maybe 15-30m with walls and stairs. You could also use ICS (internet connection sharing) on your PCs to boost it and act as an extender.
If you have the option, use a portable modem.

Also, we use approximately 150GB per month, so we'd be doing this weekly. Isn't there a block after activating more than 5 Sims per person?

I think that Kogan does block them after a while - you could always ask another family member to activate the SIM.
If the block refers to purchases, you could also just spend $6-$10 on a code from eBay

For 150GB a month, using a hotspot thru a mobile phone is not a good idea. Also, Kogan uses Vodafone, so check your area and coverage, etc. before you decide. For dense areas, I have seen Vodafone speeds drop down to dead slow- it will certainly not give you the same experience as Home Broadband.

Is there a reason for that? Does it wear out faster or something? :S

        • Agree. Great use of an older unused/backup phone and if it has a removable battery, I even leave

it on charge/fully charged for 2-5 hr sessions, but turn it off/unplug when too hot/going out/sleeping etc.

A block after activating 5x SIMs on the same CREDIT/DEBIT CARD - not the same person. e.g. Open several no-fee Visa debit bank accounts, and you could activate 5x SIMs on each card every 60 or 90 (jury is still out) days.

A phone is obviously going to have a few meters range at most, plus a much-reduced battery life serving wifi, and congestion the more devices that connect. This is why you either get a pocket wifi or house modem with wifi and SIM slot - that provide several connections.

Had ported to Kogan when they had this same deal for 99c. Any chance this will be back again? Being greedy :D

    • Your guess is as good as ours. But I'd love that back too…! I don't think there's been a noticeable trend with the $0.99 ones..

  • Put in order and got voucher email.

However can't find the page where I can order a SIM with this voucher.

The link in the email took me to activation page when already got a SIM.

    Am I missing smth?
    Can someone shed some light?
    Thank you.

However can't find the page where I can order a SIM with this voucher.

Sent automatically to address that you checkout with.

Used to be two lines in the actual order page ($2 sim that is "discounted" to free)

      • Hi cwongtech,

They must have changed it since. Can't see anything where I can order a SIM for free.

        Here is the email instruction:
"If you are a new Kogan Mobile customer, visit the Activation Centre to redeem your voucher. Simply enter it after selecting the option "I have an email with a voucher code" at the "Plans" stage of activation. Your SIM card will be on its way soon."

Click on the link to Activation Centre leads to https://accounts.koganmobile.com.au/activation which appears to be for those already have a SIM.

Anyway, I sent Support an email so will hopefully sort this out soon.

        • The free Kogan physical simcard will be mailed to you automatically once you paid for your order. You should receive an email in a few days stating that the simcard has been mailed to you. You cannot activate the voucher without a simcard.

          • @slowFTL: Ok that explains it.

            Thanks slowFTL.

Kogan support got back to me with the same answer.

            • @rabkoa: Just received email the SIM on the way.

I have already use another SIM to activated, always order some free SIM when they are available.

  • Sorry I didn't understand it at all. Whats special in this deal? I always find this deal on Kogan mobile website because every month I have to buy this for my portable modem.

    • +3

      The price

    • They have special on this randomly like 0.99, $1, this time $4.90

  • why can't Kogan just have 365 days plan to $90? some people might be sick of port in port out so join 365 days plan instead… $4.90 going on for 6 months, i think since December.

  • They always have this deal running, you just have to search for Kogan mobile in Google and the first result which will be an ad, will be for this deal.

    • +3

yep..some deals are bloody hard to find in their website but have to go back to ozbargain for the link.

      • Yea don't advertise it on their website and if you try to open the ad in the Kogan app it doesn't work

        • Their members area that I just setup as a new customer doesn't work and neither does the password recovery. So now I have to call a third world slave and hand over personally identifying information.

  • to use this data only, what is the recommended cheapest modem for tethering? a 4G cheapie phone or dongle?

    • +1

Old android flagship is faster than a cheap wifi hotspot
      About twice as fast.

    • I am using this one bought it on special

      https://www.bigw.com.au/product/optus-huawei-4g-wifi-modem-e…

      • i brought one of those from office works and seems to be ok…i have used phone for hotspot but it kills batteries, glad that i got it and must have when im travel.

        • Great little modem that used to be unlocked out of the box, not sure if still is now though.

  • +2

Used it as a hotspot on a spare phone when we were away during the last school holidays with no wifi in the airbnb place we stayed. Whole family used it over the week and I've got enough days left to use it when I go to hospital this week for 3 days. And yes I've disabled auto recharge :-)

sim card delivered using Aus pos? Can it be sent to Aus post locker? i.e. Not letter?

'For safety and security reasons, the following items can't be delivered to (or sent from) a Parcel Locker:
Letters and standard mail that can be delivered to your letterbox
    Express Post letters
    Registered Post items'

These are all I ever use. I'd be doomed if Kogan ever stopped offering these.

  • Anyone got an extra sim card in melbourne cbd? I bought two but only got 1 in the mail

  • What is the cooldown period to be a new customer if you are an existing customer. ie transfer to another provider and transfer back to kogan?

    Thanks

    • +1

If you're asking how long you must wait before getting another $4.90 SIM as a new customer when you were already a Kogan customer… then there is no wait time. That is:

      a) If you want to keep the same phone number, you port out to another non-vodafone telco (because porting between telcos that resell vodafone causes delays). Then you port the same number back to Kogan again. You are now a 'new customer', because that phone number left Kogan for another telco (even though it was just a few minutes ago and you're porting back in).

      b) And if you don't need to keep the same phone number, all you have to do is login to your Kogan SIM 1 account, delete your credit card info and cancel automatic bill payments for SIM 1, cut up SIM 1 and discard it. Then order SIM 2 (or order it before you cut up SIM 1 if your only internet access was using SIM 1), but when it comes time to activate SIM 2, you register the new phone number printed on the cardboard pack the SIM comes in. In other words the new phone number on each pack = a new account = a new customer.

      • +3

You can't port out and then back again to Kogan within 30 days, it will flag in the system that you're not a new customer. You need to wait 30 days before you can port back in.

        • What about using a new email address, and different bank account - does it still reject you?

          • +1

@GregMonarch: Yes, it's the mobile number that flags. What happens during the activation and port in process is when you apply the voucher it will say it's not valid. If you are to use the same voucher to activate a new number then that's not a problem it will accept that voucher.

            • @chadiwrx: Ok, thanks. Doesn't benefit me as I'll never go on an 'expensive' plan like theirs anyway (compared to Catchconnect and Amaysim deals, LOL). But I asked because it's good for others reading to know.

Personally I have no problem with taking a new phone number. You get free calls & SMS anyway, so just send the same SMS to everyone in your address book with your new number. The few people that don't bother updating it on their phone obviously don't think you're worth talking to, and everything government can use Australia Post as far as I'm concerned. ;-p

              • @GregMonarch: "GregMonarch" "and everything government can use Australia Post as far as I'm concerned."

Not sure what you mean by that, can you please elaborate a little?

                • +1

@ozhunter68: Hi. I just meant that if government can't contact you on an old phone number, they soon write a letter. :-)

                  • @GregMonarch: Cheers, that makes sense now, I agree, let them chase us the old way by snailmail :-)

      30 days

Did anyone notice what date it was when Kogan changed the expiry to 31/10/2019 ?

    • Does that apply to sim/recharge codes purchased in may? Thanks :)

      • I keep a record of expiry dates, and voucher codes purchased in May will expire on the 31st July. (They won't automatically shift to 31/10/19, but Kogan might shift the expiry date to the 31st if you phone them.)

        • Thanks Greg, Appreciate all your work on this thread.

  • +4

Just a note for those that need access to internet now that Kogan SIMs can now be purchased at some 7-Elevens and United stores: https://www.koganmobile.com.au/where-to-buy-kogan-mobile-sim…

Also, the deal now expires 31 Dec 2019 and the new voucher expiry date is 31 Jan 2020.

    • Is this just for the $2 blank SIMs, or the $4.90 activation code too?

      • I haven't checked but I assumed the $2 SIMs.

      • +1

It's the $2 blank SIM, you can activate it with the $4.90 activation code. I can't wait for the SIM to be mailed so I went to 7-Eleven to get a SIM.

  • i need data during down time at home…once 40G have used, can i cancel it? i'm mean cancel the phone number

    • +2

You just let it expire. That is:

      1. You order/pay the $4.90.

      2. An email arrives with an Activation Code. (This takes anything from a few minutes to a few hours. My longest wait so far was 4.5 hours, when I ordered one at 1am. It seems to arrive fastest when you order between 6-8pm - 20 minutes or less.)

      3. If you already have a spare/blank Kogan SIM card, you can use the activation code to activate that SIM. If you don't have a blank SIM you wait until it arrives in the mail. (Which takes from a few to several days. My longest wait so far has been 10 days.)

      4. After you've activated, have setup the account, and created a new PIN/password… Login, then click on "Payment Methods" - and delete the Payment Schedule and your Credit Card info.

Step 4 means the SIM will just stop working in 30 days and you won't be charged for following month/s. (The number doesn't actually 'expire' for 90 days from activation. It remains active that long in case you decide to recharge it.) i.e. You can still receive texts and calls on that SIM for 90 days in total, but obviously can't send/phone out after the initial 30 days is up that you paid for.

  • Damn NBN has been down for days. I got this one as my backup Internet at the moment. Hopefully, NBN will be back on in 30 days. Why the hell NBN exists?!

  • Can the Kogan Mobile SIM cards be bought over the counter anywhere?
