            @cloudie9: Isn't tempura Japanese …?

            • -2

@Diji1: Sort of… Tempura (the u is silent) is the Japanese way of saying "tempora", a Latin word meaning "times", "time period" used by both Spanish and Portuguese missionaries to refer to the Lenten period or Ember Days (ad tempora quadragesima)… wikipedia

Fried food was introduced by Portuguese residing in Nagasaki in the 16th century, and the name "tempura" relates to that origin. wikipedia

Fried food in Japan is really Portuguese food, Ramen is from China, & most "sushi" here is a US developed food. But the Japanese do it best🍲

Often Japanese consider Tempura Foreign food, like it's name. Some customs relating to eating food do not apply to this Foreign food.

              • @INFIDEL: Tempura… Yuuuum

Yes, people want to believe what they are used to. In life, it's not that important what others believe. (7 negs so far😱 Neg votes are being balanced out by upvotes over time😉)

Like some Westerners, I'm fascinated by Japanese history, the country, it's people & customs.

Spent time exploring & getting to know the fantastic & horrific history of 16th century Portuguese, Dutch & British in Western Kyushu, Hirado & original Dejima Islands where they were limited to.

My interest was sparked when I visited the VOC museum in Amsterdam with artifacts from that Dutch trading company's period on Dejima. I never knew about this before then. We are all ignorant about much in life, but can learn

It's interesting for it's influence on today's Japan. The disdain of that period for people of Western Kyushu still remains for many in Japan.

Japanese are usually very proud & knowledgeable about the origins of their culture & language - and may politely point out Temura is not a Japanese word.
And Edo period food customs many still adhere to predate Western contact.

From what I learnt, the word temp(u)ra is the latan word tempora, brought in by the (persecuted & massacred) Portuguese missionaries. It is not of Japanese origins. The fried food was learnt from the Portuguese. People there still consider this food Foreign.

Similar to the iconic Aussie meat pie here (brought in presumably by the British), the Japanese have adopted Tempura & it is firmly associated with Japan in peoples minds.

Good Tempura is a favourite of mine. It's history just adds a little extra flavour.

                • @AkiraSaito: I've totally enjoyed exploring Japan… from islands to the North of Wakkanai to South of Naha 🗾

Customs, people, history, landscape, food - all change as I journeyed around Japan. Wondering where to see there next… There's always more to discover in Japan.

              • +1

@INFIDEL: Google says it's from the Portuguese tempero meaning seasoning which makes more sense if true.

                • @zoob: Thanks. Origins of 16th century words are often uncertain & debated.

Portuguese Tempero is still used in describing seasoning. It originates from a different Latin word temperare. It is also considered to be the origin of the word Tempura.

The first Westerners to live in Japan were Portuguese missionaries using Latin in their religious teaching. And seasoning their food😉

Observing Portuguese frying their different food & probably saying Tempero for seasoning it, the origin of the food & its name likely happened at the same time.

Given its connection with food - Tempero is more likely. But we will never really know (my delorean is in for its 1000year service😉).

So Tempora (time), Tempero (seasoning)… Either way, the word Temp(u)ra is not of Japanese origins, but introduced by the Portuguese.

For Japanese - that makes it not a Japanese but a Foreign word, like the food.

              • @INFIDEL: Much the same with what is referred to here as Wasabi (little sachets of hot green paste, provided in Japanese (sometimes really Korean) restaurants here) is actually coloured horseradish. It may contain a small amount of old ground Wasabi at best.

Wasabi is expensive & hard to grow, horseradish is cheap.

When you've been served freshly grated Wasabi root - you understand those sachets are frauds😉

But some people will argue it is really Wasabi - because that's what they've been told & believe.

                • @INFIDEL: Luv wasabi. So where can I buy the real wasabi in Oz?

                  • @Yummy: Daiso

                  • @Yummy: There are growers of Wasabi root & products made from it in Australia. Like in Japan - it is hard to grow & expensive.
I've only eaten the freshly grated Wasabi root in Japan (restaurants & a farm).

Try searching. Tastes wonderful. Better than horseradish (which I also love) sold by Daiso etc.

For a 256GB 8? yeh not bad at all

          • @0jay: But do you seriously need 256gb on an iPhone what are you going to do on there

            • @[Deactivated]: It’s more a question of market value. As to your question everyone has different needs and habits but it’s pretty well beyond dispute that many people find vast storage to be very useful whether for video or whatever else you might store on any other digital volume.

    Compare this on ebay, New Apple iPhone 8 64GB 256GB Grey Silver Gold 4G Unlocked 12 Month Warranty $799.00 - 10% = $719.10?

Wonder if Officeworks would price match that?

      • I'm wondering too.. Will try tomorow 😁

        • Let me know how you go.

        • They don’t pricebeat coupon and for apple product, the last time I tried to price beat they gave excuses that the source or seller needs to be authorized apple reseller and brand new. So I’d say good luck getting it price beat…

          • @cloudie9: Well its not a coupon sale on eBay and OW now price beat parallel/grey imports. See here

            • @Capo93: Check out the latest comments, apparently ow is getting harder to price beat parallel/ grey import.

    • That's not new, read carefully

      • Why neg? The eBay listing says 'new iPhone' then it says 12 month seller warranty only - why not Apple warranty? Obv not new!

        • It’s new, it’s probably a grey import.

    • +2

Listing says phone is new but in generic packaging. 12 month seller warranty. If these were Apple refurb they would come with Apple warranty. I call bullshit on this being new stock.

      • Just read the eBay feedback….many phones with scratches or depleted batteries under 80% LOL

  • +1

Good phone, the only Telstra bluetick iPhone since 6S.

  • +2

I just went to the store. They are out of stock now.

  • Just rang them all sold out

  • A 64Gb version of this phone is available online for $500. I would think that is much more worth the price.

    • +4

Where can you get a new 8 for $500?

  • I think the iphone 8 plus for $945 (officeworks price match to the jb hifi deal) is a better deal. It has a bigger battery, MUCH better camera (dual lenses), more ram, and bigger screen etc.

    • I’ve no interest in anything much bigger than an SE, therefore a plus sized iphone holds zero extra value for me in spite of it’s better camera, bigger battery etc
