Saves $40 on RRP of a brand spanking new one.
    But I dont have a 4k TV…
And I'm not sure what I'd do with an Apple TV…

    • +2

The 4K model is better all round - much faster processor.

Our main uses are Netflix, Plex, Channels (live TV from another box in the house) and iView.

      Runs like a champ.

But Kodi banned from Apple store because it allows plugins that Apple cannot control.

        • +2

If you have a mac you might be able to self-sign the Kodi using XCODE.
I did that on mine and it works great.

        • You can buy MrMc which is practically Kodi, but with limited skins and no user installable addons, it's actually pretty good.

      • Yes I own the Apple TV HD (4th gen) and I agree.
I got it for under $170 so I’m happy, but noticed it can seem a bit laggier at times than the previous gen model (3rd gen) which has slow animations, but was smooth and never laggy.
The Apple TV HD sometimes has moments when the ‘Wishlist’ takes a moment to appear, and there is a loading animation (circular animated icon) which takes up the screen and lags a bit sometimes when browsing through titles (movie info).
Lagging has slightly improved with a recent tvOS update,
but I also run it at 720p and rent in SD (cheaper prices).

I’m sure most of you will expect blazing fast performance in full 1080p (or 4K), so I recommend spending the slight extra on the Apple TV 4K with its much more recent faster processor and longer product life / support (tvOS updates) for future use.
(Even if you only need to use it in HD)

  • For those with Qantas points this is a better deal for a brand new one https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/452538

Any how I have both an Xbox One S and Apple TV 4K. It is both great but as been said no Kodi on Apple TV. But I use the MrMC program on Apple TV to stream from Plex and Emby. With that it plays any video and sound that i stream to it in direct play with no transcoding.

      • That’s a great price, thanks for the link.

    • Agree, but if you want Airplay, then I think this is the only option.

great devices - i have 2 of them.

I bought a game controller for the kids to use - cant fault them.

  • +1

Still think waiting for the new Apple TV+ app to make its way onto other streaming devices would be a better choice.

  • Thanks OP. Got one … can always return if not suitable. Have an Nvidia shield that does all but rest of the stuff is in apple eco system.

    • I changed from a shield to an Apple TV 4K a few months ago and would never got back now

      • +1

Wow, big call as I’ve only ever heard people arguing the other way.

I’m a long time Apple TV user but have recently thought about making the switch to a shield on the back of all the other usercomments, why have you found Apple TV better?

      • +1

Last few updates have made shield kind of horrible, I'm looking to switch too. They broke networking for high bitrates and video files freeze every couple of minutes. All fine if you watch potato quality though. Shield i got in 2015 broke on the weekend so might even grab this.

        • I agree. It does get frequent updates but keeps getting slower, 4K content from local NAS becomes painful and it auto adjusts quality as it can’t keep up.

      • What’s your usual apps?

I have plex server on NAS so shield is my client. Not sure if plex app is best for Apple TV, any suggestions?

Usual Netflix, Amazon Prime, Kayo should be same (or better) I hope

  • If only the 32GB was in stock. That would make today a good day.
