  • Oh man I'd love something like this for HTPC that run kodi. Would beat all those tiny boxes that have been insufficient for me in the past.

    • +3

Yeah honestly a box like this is excellent for anything except gaming. I picked one up with very similar specs a year or two ago for my folks. For 200 bucks you can't really go wrong. For a HTPC you would probably want to add extra storage unless it's all streaming for you.

      • +1

this is excellent for anything except gaming

Chuck in the 1050ti LP which was on special for ~$160 yesterday and it is fine for 1080p gaming.

          • +13

@[Deactivated]: Horses for courses really. Some people have a limited budget - I know I could justify spending ~$400 on a general/basic gaming computer for my (under 10) son, but $1400 would be out of the question.

At ~4x the price, does it offer 4x better gaming?

            • +1

@djkelly69: Better off buying a Xbox one X for 4K gaming at that point they can be had for as little as $400-$500 for 4K gaming

        • If I added a RX570 (if this is actually possible), do I need to worry about other things like cooling components etc? Sorry for the noob question.

          • +1

@The Almighty Dollar: It is definitely possible to add a 1050ti low profile card (source: I have a 9010 SFF with a 1050ti LP in it). I haven't changed anything else and haven't had any issues, but also haven't run it too hard.

Edit: not sure about a 570, don't think it would fit though unless it is a low profile version.

      • +5

        excellent for anything except gaming.

I've no issues with playing MineSweeper

        • +2

Can it handle spider solitaire or is that too graphically demanding?

          • +6

            @WhyAmICommenting: I get full 60FPS

            • @Calmago:

              I get full 60FPS

              In multiplayer mode?

          • @WhyAmICommenting: Not sure, but Pyramid Solitaire works great. No lag.

    • +1

for HTPC that run kodi. Would beat all those tiny boxes

Why? Optiplex is great for desktop, but I run Kodi under LibreElec on a fanless ARM box, works perfectly. Not underpowered like the Raspberry Pi I used before for Kodi.

    • +1

I picked up a similar box, to replace my HTPC earlier this week from Electronic Recycling Australia for $30
      Optiplex 390, Core i3 2120, 8Gb RAM, 250Gb HDD, no OS

Transplanted my SSD and Storage Drives, then installed Ubuntu Budgie on it last night and it flies!
And as a bonus, it's quieter than my previous Antec HTPC case.

      • where was that deal post ;)
do they show up often that cheap?

got a microserver that died yesterday so now need to find some kind of replacement

        • Mostly cause it's geographically restricted to SA Only and cause it's not their standard offering.

Here is the starting point of the deal, site states only 9 units available but I was given a different impression "instore" that they had stacks of these available.
          https://www.electronicrecyclingaustralia.com.au/product/refu…

Photo shows a SFF box (I reckon), but mine is a slimline Desktop Case
          I didn't want/need Windows nor Keyboard/Mouse or Monitor.

I stopped in on the way home from work and that was the price quoted me.
I said, "I'll take one" and they asked me to wait 10 minutes while they assembled everything (presumably just dropped in CPU/Heatsink/fan, RAM and HDD)
Machine is pristine inside, no dust anywhere.

          • @ESEMCE: damn, SA a bit far to travel for a cheap pc ;)

  • With the SSD inside, how many HDDs can I fit into one of these?

    • from dells website

WRONG specs. That is desktop, this is SFF, as you can see from the slim DVD.

Has room and sata connectors for 2x 2.5", plus slim optical drive.

So you can have both SSD and a few TB of HDD storage.

    • +2

      1 at most.

      • +1

You can throw in another SSD with some duct tape.

        • +1

Likely only 2 SATA Headers though, so you'd have to sacrifice the DVD

    • In a SFF, I previously found a spare sata port and was able to squeeze in a SSD in addition to the on board 3.5 HDD but I think i had to purchase a sata power splitter

      • +1

Come to think of it there's additional ways you could add more 2.5" storage

        a) remove dvd drive and use an adapter https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61q0slhSkBL.SX679.jpg

        b) install a pcie to sata/sdd/nvme adapter

        • Do you have a ebay link for pcie to sata/sdd/nvme adapter?

Do you actually need an adapter for the DVD part?
can't you just directly connect a sata cable to the drive?

    • +1

You can fit 3 inside these. Two where the preexisting SSD is and one if you replace the optical.

      • so could you
        - leave existing SSD
        - add additional drive to drive location next to SSD
        - add drive in replacement of optical

        would that fit?

      • The one replacing the optical drive can only be a notebook drive, not a 3.5" drive.

Also you will need to replace the power cables as the optical drive doesn't use a standard connector.

        • you just need an optical drive caddy, which will hold it in place properly and no need to replace the cable. they cost about $6 on ebay.

      • can i install 4x 8gb ram to make it to 32gb? any space?

    • I've got one of these from a previous deal with a different seller. the ssd came in a caddy with space for a 2nd ssd and also had a 2nd power supply (but i've read others had to get themselves a power splitter so i was probably lucky there). I then installed a 3rd in the optical drive.

    • It depends on what the SSD is inside. If an M2 drive and a 3.5 caddy, then a 3.5 inch HD can be installed. Else you end up with a small SSD that takes up the space of when the caddy sits.

We have just replaced these units and they have been reliable machines for our department.

  • Isn't it worth the extra $40 for the i5-4750?

    • If you are using it as a desktop computer then probably yes as long as you aren't going to add a GPU.

      • Sorry, how does adding the 4750 affect a GPU? Does it take up more space?

        • +2

The $40 value comes from the difference in iGPU (Intel HD Graphics 2500 vs 4600).
So getting a dGPU eliminates the need for this iGPU improvement.

    • Link? I'm about to pull the trigger on one (mother in law home PC)

    • I think that model has a 128GB SSD though - If it's the one I just bought, lmao.

    • +2

If you're a gamer maybe, but the benchmarking shows little difference.

Note the 4th gen will run slightly hotter (TDP 84W v 77W).

      TheGhostWhoWalks
      Awesome

      • +1

That's got to be the result of a change in the way they measured/reported TDP.

Both CPUs use a 22nm process and the 4th gen one runs at a lower frequency. Their specs are very similar, the biggest difference being the onboard graphics.

I'd be willing to place a bet that when measured the 3rd gen system uses more power/creates more heat.

        • Oh. It did seem a little odd.

      • +1

TDP does not tell you how hot it will run in normal use.

Just like the kW engine rating of a car does not tell you its fuel efficiency.

        • Sure, but it is a guide for comparison purposes though isn't it?

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: A very rough correlate. I would not read anything into such a small difference.

  • So could this be used as a NAS?
(I struggle to stream video from my underpowered Synology, so I'm looking for an alternative option)

    • No reason why not. I had one of these that I picked up from work that was no longer being used.

I took the board out and put it into a Thermaltake case and it now runs Xpenology in place of my old HP N54L that was doing the job. Hums along nicely now with 3 drives inside.

Could of course use FreeNAS if you wanted as well (plus more options I suspect).

    • The one thing I could never be sure about was the SATA specification: SATA II or SATA III (6Gbps). If it was SATA III, how many channels and ports. On the 9020 series it was all SATA III.

    • As a NAS, how would you fit more hdd into this though?
      The case is very small.

      • +1
      • Suppose that depends on how many drives you want in it. I took the board out and put it into a spare case I had which allowed for more drives. If someone has one then worthwhile and a cheap option.

If not then if you only run two drives (I know some people who do as they watch a show or movie and delete so they don't need huge amounts of drives) then this would work fine. Couple that with much larger drives being available these days and it could easily work as a 2 bay NAS running Xpenology.

      • It can only fit 1x3.5 HDD

if you take the optical out, it can have 1 x 3.5 and 2 x 2.5"

        • Must have been why I decided to rip mine out and put it into a bigger case then. Couldn't remember as it was a while back when I did it.

  • +2

If anyone was thinking of putting this into another case then it can be done.

The mobo mounting points are standard micro atx so as long as the case can take it you are good to go. One thing you would need to have is an adapter to use an alternate power supply as the standard connector is proprietary. Ebay has them if you search Dell 8 to 24 pin.

You can also search for dell 5 pin fan adapter to have that option which in turn ensures no power on fan missing issues.

PCI SATA card as well and you can easily expand the number of drives.

    • OMG ! This changes my mind on waiting for 75w 1650Ti or Navi.

I assume we have to ditch the cpu cooler as well ?

      • +1

        I didn't.

The one other thing I did do was to take the power switch out of the old machine and re-use it on the new. Plenty of diagrams out there for pinouts if you need.

        http://pinoutguide.com/Motherboard/Dell_Optiplex_360_790_701…

        This being one :)

        • Just thought of mobo I/O shield backplate ..

You can do without one ? Gonna looks jank and dust traps with those gaps/holes :D

          • +1

@dcep: I'm doing without one. I don't see it as the unit is behind the TV cabinet. If you want your case to be a talking point for guests then maybe an IO shield is key.

In my use case it's function over form but your need may vary.

            • @jollster101: you sure yours is 9010 SFF ?

there is 24pin on my 9010 mobo

              yours probably is 9020 SFF

              • +1

@dcep: Oh, you could be right.

Looking at the earlier thread that I was in when I was converting to a different case it was the 9020.

                Apologies.

                • @jollster101: No worries.

Does the mobo pcie slot lines up with the standard ATX case ?

                  • +1

@dcep: I don't use it but it appears to based on the quick look I had.

It's worth having a read of the comments in this thread as well as that is where I started.

                    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/426657

Have a look at the comments between rx8geek and I as that may give some insight as well.

  • OB post says Win 10 pro, eBay ad says Win 10 Home.

    What is it OP?

    • +1

I've just updated that, sorry it is home. If it's a major issue, if anyone orders and requires pro just send through a message, it's an easy fix

  • The title says it comes with Win 10 Pro, but the body says it's Windows 10 Home.

    Which is it?

    • +1

I've just updated that, sorry it is home. If it's a major issue, if anyone orders and requires pro just send through a message, it's an easy fix

      • +1

        Super. The Phantom hates auto-updates.

  • The pricing is fine, but keep in mind the 9010's with 3rd gen processor is probably around 7yo now (correct me if i'm wrong OP), so someone has pushed their lease period out a little. The older the box is, then generally the greater the risk with the power supply transitioning to very dead.

    • +2

It's impossible to guess a products usage with the high numbers of equipment we deal with. Generally we assume 3~4 years, as that's the standard service/ lease cycles.

However it's pretty common for equipment to sit for years before been deployed. If you don't spend your budget you loose it.

      • It's impossible to guess a products usage…

Oh sure, and that's the main thing. I did say 'generally' to protect myself there.

    • I wonder what and when the next batch of refurbished dell optiplex will be. The 3040 version???

    • Correct. The PSU is the only thing I think that has failed in the units we had but to tell you the truth, it has only been about two units from about 120. We did have a policy of turning off computers at the end of the night and weekends.

  • 6 left. They're about to sell out.

    • 1 left…

  • Sold out of stock never mind.

  • +3

You guys must make a killing on these "refurbished" machines. I've heard companies just give them out for free as they want to get rid of them since they are fully depreciated so the value on their book its $0

  • +1

which of these good cheap Dell PC would fit a full size Asus RX570?

  • +1

for those who arent aware of the sff prices theres i7 4770 systems around 250 and you can buy a 1050ti with low profile or 1050 you can almost play anything around medium high setting with no issues

  • +2

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-EliteDesk-800-G1-SFF-Computer…

    Use Code: PSYCHED
Price comes out to be: $287.10 with 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD, if you change components price starts increasing.

It is obviously not close to $250. For Base model with 16GB without SSD/HDD, cost without voucher code is $299 delivered. So if you have a SSD lying around you can save some money.

    • +3

      That's the sff desktop I have and that's a great deal. I7 for $299

Advantage having this one over the dell's is that you can add 2x3.5" HDD and the PCI-e slot is 16x

  • Anymore available?

  • +2

Last thing you would want to is use one of these for a nas / htPC. I use a 3570 as my primary PC. And boy does it munch electricity and heat up the room in summer.

That why I spend more time on a 60w laptop. And use a 10watt windows tablet for downloading overnight.

  • Anyone had theirs ship? I ended up grabbing an AIO dell monitor/pc thing, with extra RAM.

  • just so i can keep an eye out do these support dual monitor?

  • for people who are still looking for those theres a %15 ebay discount on most of them i have seen some systems with i7 4770 and 16 gb ram cost around 288 $ after discount code and sellers are accepting offers aswell
