UPDATE: Many users are reporting cancelled orders due to a pricing error

Amazon have now started emailing to advise of the cancellation and are giving $30 vouchers per order. You can check your coupons here. For the record my order of 3 was cancelled and I received the $30 gift voucher too. The drives would have been great but I'm also pretty happy with this compensation. Congratulations to anyone who gets their order delivered.

Insane price for the 10TB WD My Book external hard drive. Limit to 3 per customer, and remember to use cashback. I grabbed 3 for $389.52 + Free Delivery with Prime.

Features

Auto backup with included WD Backup software and Time Machine compatibility
Password protection with hardware encryption
Trusted storage built with WD reliability
USB 3.0 port; USB 2.0 compatible
3-year manufacturer's limited warranty

Note on prices above $400

Some people are seeing prices over $400 and the item being listed by a different seller. This could be due to a variety of reasons such as cookies, account preferences or perhaps they are not logged in. You can append ?smid=A4XRJ8S0WXSO0 to the URL or by using the "Other Sellers on Amazon" widget to choose Amazon US as the seller.

Brings back memories of the SSD sale that one time from Greys online…

      • Oh I remember that. Can't find the thread though

        • May have been deleted. I still have the text I sent to my BIL about it and I can't find anything matching the date in my upvotes/comments. March 9 2017.

    • +3

Don't get charged until they ship btw.

      • Wow I buy tonnes and tonnes of stuff on Amazon and never realised this… That's really cool

      • I just got charged, hmm

      • I just got charged

      • +1

In my experience that only holds true for backorders/preorders

    • I got charged too. hopefully they honour the price

      • What time did you order?

    • My order was cancelled :( but they gave me a $30 gift card

  • +8

I thought I was on a good thing when I grabbed 2 of the WD Element 10TB's for $500!!! And now I've just realised I've bought 50TB's worth of external HD's in the last month - I need a bigger server.

    • +1

what are you storing 50tbs worth of

      • +24

40TB with one drive for Parity - 4k Video of my kids… And linux iso's of course :)

        • +13

          +1 for Linux iso's haha

  • On ya op. Grabbed one.

  • Don't even need this…

  • +1

ordered 2, see how it goes

  • Surely pricing error

    • +30

Bill Shorten was surely going to win. What do the polls say about this?

  • Ordered hope for the best you never know.

  • +3

anyone have experience if they cancel orders for pricing errors in the past?

    • +3

They don't say anything but give you a $5 credit is my one and only experience.
I don't need this but tempted to buy just for the free credit or more GB than I'm ever going to need.

  • +7

    the review…..doesn't look good.

  • Ordered 3! Thanks.

  • +1

If you actually "need" a new drive, might be a good idea to get the 8TB model for $171 as well.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/457687

Just in case this 10tb model is a pricing error.

Edit. The 8TB is a great deal but this 10tb is an insane deal.

    • +1

I'd be salivating over that 8TB deal if this wasn't here

  • +5

Recent reviews are all bad, they run very loudly and die before warranty, and you have to send them back to US for replacement. Maybe it is better to wait for WD Elements 10TB

    • +5

i assume many people shuck these and use them in their servers/nas/pc's
they get good wraps for that purpose on many forums/reddit etc

      • +4

Yep, I intended to shuck them. Run much faster in SATA 3 cable than usb 3.0

        • Any know for certain if they are shuckable?

          • @Oxxy: Just but it, this can be checked later :)

          • +1

@Oxxy: Yep takes me about 1-2 min a drive to shuck.

          • -7

@Oxxy: No consumer grade external drive would be unshuckable. It would be cost-prohibitive to make a external drive vastly different from an internal drive.

            • +9

@DASHCAM NOW DUDE: Not true - some drives do indeed have USB controllers soldiered on to the PCB, rather than SATA. (These ones are definitely SATA though)

Only seen this myself in some 2.5" drives though.

              • @mahdoo: WD 2.5" usb drives are all unshuckable.

they have the usb controller directly soldered on without any sata connection.

if you damage the micro usb port somehow then the drive is cactus

              • @mahdoo: Those are great for a Raspberry Pi OSMC install with VPN client, transmission torrent client and sickchill. For automated anonymous linux iso downloading and cataloging obviously.

        • How would that work? Have no experience with this.

          • @Zazer: you mean shucking?
shucking is just cracking open an external usb hard drive to access the internal drive inside so that you can either use it in a desktop pc / laptop / ps4 / xbox.

it not difficult especially if you dont care about damaging the plastic clips. Most if not all dont have screws so its just a matter of breaking the plastic clips with a knife (if you're super careful the clips wont break so you can reassemble the drive if need be)

the main thing to note is that you buy the right drive (eg. laptops/ps4/xbox takes 2.5" drives)

            • +1

@voter1: ok otherwise how can i use this drive if i leave it in there? not sure exactly what i bought but everyone else was buying it so i did as well

              • @Zazer: its a usb drive - you can plug it into anything that accepts usb

desktop pc / laptop / ps4 / xbox /tv/ even phone if you buy the right adapter

                • @voter1: hmm ok do you know the speeds? and what do people use 10TB for? backups? lots of games?

would it be possible to remove the hard drive and put it in my PC?

                  thanks

                  • @Zazer: yes thats what ive been saying - you can remove this hard drive and put it in your pc
just rip open the plastic shell and disonnect it from the bracket inside. then reconnect it to your pc the same way.

people use it for all sorts of things. basically all of the above.

dont get your hopes up though 99.9% you're not getting this drive. pricing error.

                    • @voter1: Wow that's awesome! How big is the drive itself? Is it just a single 10TB 2.5" drive?? That's crazy. How big is this enclosure that it comes in?

I'm excited even though I don't have a PC yet - am considering Techfast :)

edit - just saw a youtube video and WOW! idk why but from looking at the product image i thought it was a big size like a PC or something. my hopes are definitely up that this doesn't get canceled now haha.

                      • +1

@Zazer: the drive in this deal is a 3.5" drive
it wont fit in laptops or ps4/xbox if you shuck it.
only for desktop pc via shucking.

3.5" external drive is about the size of 3 dvd cases

                        • @voter1: thats awesome im so excited my first hard drive purchase i hope they honour it :)

if i purchase more than one order will they give more than one discount code do you know?

  • Here are some more reviews from the US Amazon site
    https://www.amazon.com/10TB-Desktop-External-Drive-WDBBGB010…

    • This link says it's $79.99!
      Must resist.
Edit; this is the USD price. Considering you've provided the US link, makes sense. Ignore me.

  • can't resist with this price, brought one, thanks OP

  • +1

    Can u shuck these?

    • I'd like to know too lol. Bought one first!

  • You got the camelcamelcamel email too op, was just on my way to post this.

It's definitely a price error, here's to hoping they fulfill the orders, wishful thinking I know….

    • Even if they cancel don't amazon usually give a voucher?

      • Ooh, yes that's right, thanks hippyhippy!!

      • Last time they messed up I got $20 credit

        • Got a source? Want to read up more about this if possible

    • +2

Ordered 1 for that voucher error reason, lol

  • and got 1, didnt even need one either.

  • Definitely a price error but bought anyway for the free Amazon credit.

  • order placed for 1 just to test, hopefully it goes through

  • Got one.

  • +10

Ordered 1 for my growing collection of romantic movies. ;)

    Hope the sale is honoured.

  • Is there an Ethernet version of external drives, other than the typical Synology/Qnap devices?

    • Yeah WD call it My Cloud .

    • WD has mycloud drives. I bought a Seagate personal cloud drive a while back, it has a couple of options, but it's not well featured by any stretch. I have run into times where I want to do something but it's not possible, and the Seagate app at least is terrible.

  • Order one just for the voucher. Prefer voucher rather than the product.
