UPDATE: Many users are reporting cancelled orders due to a pricing error

Amazon have now started emailing to advise of the cancellation and are giving $30 vouchers per order. You can check your coupons here. For the record my order of 3 was cancelled and I received the $30 gift voucher too. The drives would have been great but I'm also pretty happy with this compensation. Congratulations to anyone who gets their order delivered.

Insane price for the 10TB WD My Book external hard drive. Limit to 3 per customer, and remember to use cashback. I grabbed 3 for $389.52 + Free Delivery with Prime.

Some people are seeing prices over $400 and the item being listed by a different seller. This could be due to a variety of reasons such as cookies, account preferences or perhaps they are not logged in. • You don't get charged until they ship your order.

    • +4

Amazon doesn't charge until the product has left its warehouse. That's why these people are excited.

      • +1

The last pricing error which I purchased a while back for the bulk memory cards was charged instantly. I never received compensation vouchers and the refunded took a few days.

  • Ordered one, see how it goes. Cheers OP.

A better price just went up at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CMH78R5/

    • -1

      USD

  • ordered, lets hope it comes through :)

  • Sure that’s price error.

  • Ordered thanks

  • Ordered one. Thanks OP.

  • is this AUD price?

    • appears the $79 is in usD? im not sure how to check but that one charges for shipping and if its USD , it will cost more i think

    • yes

      • damn that is cheap if AUD price

Though at this price, probably a pricing error.

        • it is . worth a try ..if it gets cancelled amazon will prob offer some sort of voucher as consolation as with price errors before

          • @Optimus Prime: yeah probably, so we win either way..

Though last time I bought something and they just cancelled it and never gave me any vouchers.

Probably need to complain this time, if this is the case

    • Yes, AUD

      • Thanks

At first I thought it was USD price, so I converted it to become $551.49 AUD

but if the actual price is $378.43 AUD then that is damn cheap.

    • Yes, the USD price is $79

    • Damn you pagination

  • Cheap as chips thanks OP ordered one

    • +11

wow you buy your chips for $129 a kilo

      • Avocado Chips, obviously.

        • I googled to find that the most expensive potato chip is: "St. Erik's brewery of Sweden has created the most expensive potato chips ever. For $56 you get a meager five potato chips. That's over $11 per single chip." so it cant be potato chips

  • -1

Does this come with power adapter in US version of 110v?

    • it is only US plug as far as I am aware.

Though many people probably already got a 12V plug from some other hdd purchases already

    • US pins, universal voltage.

    • +1

Other commenter said they got 2 free adapters by contacting WD AU.

  • Ordered one, thanks op

  • bought 1.
good timing i just activated my prime trial. by the way, should i cancel now or wait till near 30 days? i dont intend to pay after 1 month.

    • +1

Cancel now, still gives you the rest of your 30 days. That way you don't forget to cancel.

      • +1

thanks. someone advised to cancel around 1 day left and amazon sometimes will give another 30 days.

        • -1

Why are you asking again then?

          • +1

@ozoner: that advise came after i asked 11 mins ago. i am noob about amazon. usually use aliexpress

        • Not worth the risk to be honest.

  • +2

Recently bought one during the recent $228 deal. Just ordered 3 of these. Thanks OP!

  • an alternative price if you bet on the LNP to win.. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/wd/wd-my-book-10tb-external-hard-d…

  • +4

I’ve shucked these easily. Using in my NAS. Ones I got were helium drives. Test thoroughly before shucking though. I used WD Diagnostics program. Took 16 hours to do an extended test.

    • Is it a test for seeing the reliability of the drive before putting media content onto it?

      • +3

It’s a basic extended test of the hard drive. Good to do to make sure you don’t have a dud.

        • How do I do that? Where can I find the WD Diagnostics program?
Also, how is the shucking process? Is it reversible? I've never shucked before, how does it work? Do you just take the drive out and put in your PC? I don't have a NAS or know what that is, how do they work and is it better to use this as a NAS or put in a PC? Thanks.

    • do you need to cover the 3V pin?

Also are these good for NAS?
From what I know, WD red are suppose to be better for NAS

      • 3v pin thing is not an issue for Synology NAS.

        • how come?

Is Synology NAS come with a molex to sata plug?

From what I read, the 3V will prevent hdd detection in BIOS

          • +1

@pinkybrain: Don’t know why but from other threads I’ve read it’s not been an issue for others with Synology NAS and wasn’t a problem for mine either.

            • @7hil: what about this hdd, are they suitable for a NAS?

I thought you need to get a WD red or something similar.

              • @pinkybrain: I have these in my NAS but my NAS isn’t on 24/7. These function “close” to the reds but not exactly the same. You have to make the call.

          • @pinkybrain: The drives have a power reset feature on the 3.3v pin if that pin is supplied full power the drive will not spin up but synology doesn't even implement that so it would never trigger

I didn't learn of this until the last deal either :)

  • Thought I'll join the boat too. Got 2!

  • Is this worth it to shuck?

  • Thanks! Great find, ordered 2 for NAS :)

  • -1

So wait.. R they $79 or $130 in aus?

    • 79 in USD and 129.xx in AUD. thats what i believe….

      • but the US price would convert cheaper to $116.57 AUD

        • +4

          Plus GST

  • Expecting lots of these drives for sale on Ebay and Gumtree very soon :)

    • Your expectation too hopeful

More likely it will be cancelled for pricing error.

      • As some of the buyers here already got charged for this. I guess these will be delivered as normal. Fingers crossed

        • +1

I think they don't charged till they start shipping though.

  • thanks got two

  • -5

Price fixed back to $400. Lucky that i got 2 :)))). Thank op

    • still working for me

  • How odd.

    Bought

  • Just checked and still showing $129.84 for me from op's link.

  • Such a huge storage, what do everyone filling them with?

  • Bought two a month ago (total $456.90), bought two this time ($259.68). Got to be a pricing error, but can dream.

    • I just did the same. I wish I had charged on the 28 degrees card for the first order to claim price protection. I don't think AMEX has PP

      • No but most amex cards have refund protection, provided you have unused drives to refund:)

        • I just called them. Mine doesn't. It's the Qantas essential no annual fee card

          • -2

@djevoultion: Well too bad then. Why would you bother with an no annual fee amex card in the first place? Not a very ozbargainer move. Other cards have much better sign up bonus and the travel credit will make them effectively no or very low annual fee anyway.

            • @truetypezk: May I know which credit card you are talking about? I too use a no annual fee card from Amex. With the advantage being I can use it at most places these days and continue to acquire points. With the travel credit, I believe it depends if you are really going to use it. Not sure since I haven't used one such in the past, but I guess using those points for flights are subject to availability and not always available as per your dates?

              • @interstellar: Travel credit works like cash but u can only buy tickets/hotels/attractions from amex. The bottom line is if you dont need it you can easily sell it off with 20-30% discount. The loss is negligible compared to the typical 100k sign up bonus pts from the better cards such as explorer. Havent really looked into the changes with the new rewards program but you are definitely much better off getting a more "expensive" card as a new card member. From 2nd year onwards a no annual fee might save you some troubles if you really have no use for the travel credits.

    • Very effective way to bring your dollar cost average down :D

  • Hoping to be able to open it up and use it as an internal drive

  • -8

Bought for the voucher But if it goes through sell for 150 on scumtree.

  • Anyone hooking one of these 10TB bad boys up to their XBOX One or PS4?

  • +1

$10k clicks later… Amazon is still holding up the price..

    • Its still early morning in US. They should start rocking upto work in an hour or so….

      • +1

its reached # 1 best seller - alarm bells should be ringing when they open the doors ;)

    • Yeah, plus all of the sales from Reddit too where the link was shared.

  • Ordered 2. Lets see what happens..

  • Tempted, ready for the last click, but after read the review, I give up. Thanks OP anyway.

  • -2

    it's not a price error.

Amazon US has this hard drive for US$79.99

Ordered 1, AC power cables are around AUD $15 shipped on ebay Australia.

    • Do you need to buy the AC power cables or can you use a travel plug?

      • you are able to use a travel plug, i'm using one with a 4TB hard drive I bought in USA.

      • You would have to look on the included power adapter and see if it says 50-60 Hz, and 100-240V.

    • +4

Of course it's a pricing error. The reason why Amazon US is showing the same price is because the link provided is for ordering from the US site via AU site.

    • Thanks - can you link to a reputable seller? Not sure where to buy from!

    • This is the US listing.

So then, do you have any real reasons to believe that this is not a price error?

    • You don't need to pay for the power adapter. If you wait until the drive arrives, you can call WD support and they'll ship an adapter for free

  • WD My Book's are generally pretty terrible. I have owned 4 (each I purchased really cheap on special). Each one lasted about 1 year before the controller died. That said, in each case I have just pulled the controller apart then used the hard drive in my PC. One of those hard drives died a few weeks after doing this. The rest are fine.

    • -1

I believe these have hardware encryption via the controller, so you can't* just rip the drive out and recover your data.

      * You can… but it takes significantly more effort: https://community.wd.com/t/how-to-decrypt-a-wd-mybook-drive-…

      • Yep. I wasn't saying that you just take them out and use them data and all. If they're the same as the 3TB versions then yes, you can't just take them out and use the data. On one of the drives it took me weeks to recover the data. On the other drives I gave up and just formatted them losing all the data.

But I re-used the drives as internals after that.

Edit: BTW, if anyone is trying to recover the data after the controller dies, Linux was the only way I managed to recover the data and I didn't manage to recover it all.
