UPDATE: Many users are reporting cancelled orders due to a pricing error

Amazon have now started emailing to advise of the cancellation and are giving $30 vouchers per order. You can check your coupons here. For the record my order of 3 was cancelled and I received the $30 gift voucher too. The drives would have been great but I'm also pretty happy with this compensation. Congratulations to anyone who gets their order delivered.

Insane price for the 10TB WD My Book external hard drive. Limit to 3 per customer, and remember to use cashback. I grabbed 3 for $389.52 + Free Delivery with Prime.

    • When did you order, when was/is your "will dispatch" date and when's your estimated delivery date?

      • Expedited International Delivery

        Shipped
        Delivery Estimate:

        Friday, 31 May 2019 by 9:00 pm

I ordered at 17:40, was shipped on 21st

        • Ahh okay, so the early batch of people. Lucky:)

Shout out to my June 3rd brothers - we got this

    • +1

      Hell yeah we do!

      • Still praying! bought some kapton tape in preparation….

  • Damn! I'm looking for a new hard drive and missed both the Western Digital bargains! Hopefully I get on board the next one.
Also I believe WD doesnt typically shuckle, could be wrong.

    • +1

They do shuck pretty easily, some people will need some tape to cover some pins (newer SATA standard) but no problems using these as internal drives.

  • Will Amazon/WD honour 3 year warranty? If so I won't snuck them to keep the warranty

    • +1

More importantly…. Will Amazon honor our purchase (those who are still waiting)?

But yes, 3 years warranty will be honoured.

    • " If so I won't snuck them to keep the warranty"
why would you want to snuck them, no need to be sneaky about it.

      • Oops - shuck (auto correct)

    • I think you will definitely void the warranty but still have your ACL coverage even by shucking it. Similar to the situation where apple cant simply reject you due to 3rd party repair.

      • Sure ACL would cover it? I'd say there's a big difference between getting a 3rd party to 'repair' a device versus intentionally breaking a device up for components and then asking that warranty be provided on those components. A repairs looking to maintain the device, shucking it's discarding components and re-purposing it for non intended use. Apple's not going to repair your iPhone display if you take in just the screen which you removed from the phone prior to throwing the rest out. They'll expect you provide them an iPhone.

I'd suspect if you shuck it then you're at the companies mercy as to what they'd do. I'm not sure it's reasonable to expect a device not designed to be tore down to be serviced particularly if you send it back without the original casing which I'm guessing most people would throw out. If you do want to make a warranty claim, I'd at the least keep the externals and try not to destroy is when removing the drive.

WD should honour the 3 year warranty, BUT from my past experience with WD's HDD warranty:

      • You get a refurbished one and that one only covers till the 3 year warranty ends
      • Interestingly, the refurbished one I received was noisy (but WD's official health check app indicated the drive is fine; it only lasted 6 months, by then, my 3 years warranty on the original drive ended).
      • Like all HDD warranty, there is zero data recovery service (and if you opted to use the warranty, you cannot do data recovery).
      • Posting the drive to Singapore wasn't cheap (and that was years ago).

Then, there is the question of hardware encryption (if you left it in the enclosure). It does make DYI data recovery (if it is a board failure) harder - if not impossible. Though, generally, there is a higher chance of mechanical failure - which most of us won't be able to repair.

      • So failure of the board is unlikely? Not sure whether to take the hard drive out and into a separate enclosure or not

        • Just shuck it carefully and put it back together if required no one is none the wiser. Unless this particular enclosure requires you to break something to open it?

          • @RaihaX: Surely there’s a tamper seal?

            • @PainToad: There isn't
Pretty easy to shuck, without breaking any tabs
Did one last week, with just a few spare cards out of my wallet.

        • Board failure can happen, but are you willing to get a donor board somewhere and able to do the soldering of the BIOS chip change yourself? If yes, then take the drive out makes sense (to disable the hardware encryption (which appears to be on the USB to SATA board level).

Otherwise, if you send it to a data recovery centre, it's not going to make a big difference.

          • @netsurfer: I would rather not have to send it to a data recovery centre. Do you mean if no then take the drive out?

            • @whey4000: It's better to do regular backups, rather than take the drive out (to disable the hardware encryption) in hope that the hardware failure will be a board failure and that will be somewhat user repairable (if you have a proper heat gun and soldering iron). The donor boards for these are not easy to find right now so you might need to sacrifice one healthy drive. However, make sure you are comfortable with soldering chips (especially small chips) - bear in mind that if you screwed up the BIOS chip transplant and you broke the original BIOS chip, then you will be really screwed (each individual drive's BIOS chip data is unique).

Only 25% of my HDD failures was due to a board failure. For two of my mates, their recent HDD fails were mechanical, data recovery centre was the only option. Each paid $1800+ to recover baby photos+videos.

              • +1

                @netsurfer:

Each paid $1800+ to recover baby photos+videos.

Extra HDD for backup or cloud backup sounds like a muchhhh cheaper option.

Any one know a USB enclosure compatible with SATA 3.3 without having to do the stick tape trick?

    • Get one of those SATA power splitter without the 3.3V wire and an enclosure where there is sufficient space to use that.

      • They’re all toll free now that just slide in. Therefore, no room. :(

    • Basically, get the 4 wire version of the splitter, instead of 5 wire version. Most of the cheap ones only have 4 wires.

    • i've read that synology NASs work without the tape trick

  • -1

It's a bit slack of them not cancelling the orders if they are going to.
If I really needed a drive I'd need to be making other arrangements.

    • You can never have too many hard drives

    • +1

Well, they’re already telling you an expected ship date. If you need something sooner you’d be getting a drive from somewhere else. Especially since they don’t take your money until the order is ready to ship.

    • You could make your other arrangements and if they shipped then offer it for sale here, lots of us missed out and really wanted this!

  • Cashrewards is tracking for me. Anyone elses?

    • Yes it is for me too. However I also placed another order for the Wireless Pro drive and I haven’t received a tracking email for that one yet.

    • Mine did the day after I ordered.

  • Dispatch June 3 arriving June 11-24. Hopefully, this will be the best b'day gift in a while.

  • Interesting it shows 2 instock now (at a higher price) and not back ordered.

    • This is a little concerning :(

      • +6

Tom you need to chill on the comments haha. Hoping you get yours the most out of everyone bud.

      • As long as you don't contact Amazon online support for the item status, you are safe.

        • All I did was refresh my orders page and now both wireless and 10tb hd's are cancelled.

          • @besmirched: Yep mine are gone too. What a way to cancel the orders. After 3 days!!!

          • @besmirched: I am sorry for your wireless loss.

            ;)

  • Got an email saying that it was a pricing error, but they're going to honour the price for 1.

    • pic?

    • +1

What?? 1 per person?? or 1 if you place more than on one order.. MMMmmmmmmm

      • Yeah, 50% hoping that they will honour it.

  • +2

Amazon Chat advised, they will issue out an email within 24 hours with a credit of $30 as Gift Card Balance.

      • +1

But I want my HDD, I can save a lot more lol.

        • +2

Wish Kogan can see what good customer service is like…. not giving a $5 off $100 spend voucher!!

    • +2
