  • Funny…. I got one of these today (Australia Post). When I put in my Optus Postpaid SIM, it says Invalid SIM. Then I tried another Optus Prepaid SIM, it says Invalid SIM. Both accounts are active. What gives? The DC-Unlocker says "Card not found!" Can anyone help with ideas? [I can connect my laptop to the unit via WiFi]

    • You need to connect it via USB to the PC. You also need to install the drivers/software that is stored in the modem (it identifies itself as a USB drive when plugged it).
I've unlocked mine last night.. :)

      • +1

You have to unlock it before you can use OPTUS simcard. See this website:http://m0nkeycheese.blogspot.com/2011/04/australian-huawei-e585-free-unlock.html for detial.BTW thanks m0nkeycheese

        • Thanks jerkface. The OPTUS is showing on the screen now.

      • Thanks techdave. I have successfully unlocked it following your instruction (to connect it via USB to the PC).

  • Is there still stock around? I wanna go get one tomorrow!

    • Officeworks around the country still have heaps.

  • OK guys. One more problem. I can get Telstra to work (real slow) but Optus won't work. I don't know why. I changed the APN to Optus (with new settings). Just don't know why… any assistance will be great.

  • Found the answer to my own problem. Thought I will post for others as well. The APN for Optus that works is internet. I had been using connect.

    • Or "preconnect" for Optus prepaid.

  • I bought one of these yesterday, but plan to only activate it in a month or two, when my other prepaid internet runs out. Can someone please confirm if they received a seperate 3GB recharge voucher, or if the 3GB is instantly available upon activation. I din't get a voucher, but it was allegedy the 3GB data will be there upon activation of the sim. Just wondered if this was the case for others.

    • I didn't get a voucher, just the modem, accessories and sim card. I'm guessing it'll load itself onto the sim card when I activate it.

      • ok, great, thanks for letting me know.

  • if I were to sell just the modem, would there be any of my personal info linked to it?

    • As long as you keep the SIM you are safe.

Best to do a factory reset before you sell it (that is if you have previously used it).

With the modem connected to the computer, enter "pocket.wifi" in your browser address bar, log in under "Change your settings", then go to Advanced settings > System > Restore Defaults > Restore.

      • Thanks. So when they ask for identification when purchasing phones/modems (as well as address etc.), what is that info for?

        • In short, legal reasons for tracking sim card ownership/usage by the government in case of criminal activity/terrorism etc. Read my detailed post on page 1 re this exact question for more info.

        • Ah, I see. How do they do that when I haven't opened the sim card yet? Do they simply link my details to the phone number written on the outside? So none of my details can be linked to the device itself?

        • +1

Yes, your details are linked to the SIM phone number, not to the device.

Are you paranoid that you will be arrested and incarcerated indefinitely without charge and/or evidence against you just because of the colour of your skin? Do not fear, Howard is no longer in power.

  • If you are going to stay with Vodafone I recommend installing this to keep track of your data.

Its in beta so it can be a lil buggy but way easier than checking the website

  • Anyone want my prepaid sim?

  • Can anyone confirm that once it's unlocked using Monkeycheese's method, it can't be re-locked?

    • what an odd question. Why relock it? You are unlocking by entering the correct code, not reflashing.
The "hack" part is purely read-only, so cannot do harm or void your statutory warranty.

      • I don't want to relock it, I'm just wondering if there's any way that it could become locked to Voda again. e.g. through a software update or something. Is the code we find ourselves the same one we'd get if we bought it from Voda?

        • No, re-flashing the firmware will not relock it. Yes, it is the same.

        • Re firmware, does anybody know where I can get the latest E585 firmware? Can't find it anywhere.

  • Does anyone want the 3 gig data? Willing to sell it for $15, just give me a shout.

    • $10 sounds good too

      • you in sydney?

        • yes

        • what the expiry date on sim activation?

        • 30 days from activation.

        • He means when do we have to activate it by to receive the 3GB. Would it be until the sim expiry date?

      • ^what techmate22 said. I wanted to know when the sim expiry date was so I can guage how long I have to use it. You'll find the date printed on the back of the sim card pack. Probably some time later this year or in 2012. Ta.

  • Same to me. Sim card still sealed and unused.

  • Re SIMS for sale, are your details linked to the SIMS or they didn't ask you for ID when you purchased them?

You guys realise that for $24.50 you can get a Vodafone USB modem including 3GB for $24.50 from Officeworks?
    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Net…

Maybe selling your data for $10 is more realistic.

  • I will sell my sim for $10 and I am in sydney. There is no details link to the sim as OW does not register anything from you at all.

    • Your profile is not accepting emails.

  • Out of stock pretty much everywhere around Sydney (few exceptions with little stock; Surry Hills, Miranda and Broadway to name a few). Post Office can't order more stock so they won't get any unless a rep walks in and sells them some, apparently. Easily price matched though. DSE Rockdale had it for $49 and reduced it to $39 for me.

Also, it looks like it can be unlocked for free. I haven't tried it yet but the suggestions for doing it look sound. The 'Pocket Wifi' (E585) modem/router actually looks very nice as well, with no branding on it whatsoever. Inside the Vodafone box is two seperate packages; the unbranded device's box and a generic Vodafone SIM pack (3gb/1 month). It also comes with two Micro-B USB cables — one short and one long — and a wall adapter. Easy setup.

    Impressive product. Highly recommended. +1

  • Dick smith price matched $39, rang local postie but old lady had no idea what i was talking about despite being in the catalogue. Great deal.

Being one on the vodafail bandwagon, note they do have new 850mhz towers providing -78DB (same signal strength as Telstra Vs optus -98db). SAdly this device does not support 850mhz only 900/2100 3G but mute point since i plan use this in my unlocked Telstra 21mb device.

Something those consider when using this device, I just wanted the 3Gb data and potential portable device for car.

PS. For long term users, DSE 10% off voda recharges including $150 (less 10%) for 12gb/365day expiry.

  • Not expired. Discounted price is available until the 7th August (forgot to take a picture).

    Purchased one in Melbourne today.
