Just this second read this entire thread and not sure I'm game enough……….

You can pick one up new from Big W for $919 - may not be worth the hassle

I bought a Refurbished TV (Seconds) from Sony eBay and it came practically brand new (no scratches whatsoever, seemed like it was just re-packaged).

I'd imagine the box damaged models would be essentially brand new but marked as Box Damaged as they can't sell them as brand new.

      • +6

I just wonder how they know the damage is only to the box and not TV. Unless they’ve opened it and checked, and repackaged, in which case I wonder why thy don’t repackage back into a new box, surely a new box is cheaper than to heavily discount.

Something doesn’t add up to me

        • +1

I bought one a few months ago. Box was fine but it was for a different model. TV was perfect, very happy. Printing a new box in Australia would likely be cost prohibitive, better to stick it in something else and sell it as a box damaged/rebox.

          • +7

@downbythecreek: “Printing a new box in Australia would likely be cost prohibitive,“. Yes may be the same cost of the tv

          • @downbythecreek: In Australia, if it's not brand new you cannot legally sell it as brand new. If it has been taken out of box tested and even put it in a new box you will need to sell it as NOT BRAND NEW, which could be anything from Box Damaged, New but not used, refurbished etc.

Hi mate, it's not that simple, I use to work for an Authorized Distributor of whitegoods in Aus and NZ and repackaging is not an option due to the following reason

          1. They are not the manufacturer and hence they don't have the original packaging material.
          2. For box damage goods distributor claims damage from the manufacturer, which mean goods are further discounted.
          3. Box damage goods are not excepted by the retail store and hence the distributor have no choice but to resale as second or box damage. Still, they make a profit from this. You will be surprised what the original cost of these goods are and how much customer pay.

Can vouch for these sales too. Bought a pair of box damaged SSCS3 speakers a while ago at well under half price and they arrived in mint condition, with both boxes unmarked.

      • Same, I bought 65” X9300E Seconds at just over $1900 from Sony ebay, it came in mint condition couldn’t find anything anywhere on it.
The screen though came up with a horizontal line after a while which was due to an issue they had across some models. Sony replaced the panel no issues since…

    • +3

Thought it was found that user didn't take it out of box correctly?

      • I got it

      • +3

        Correct.
The user took the TV out of the box but you're meant to unbox the box from the TV.

    • EDIT: Re-read that thread you linked - wow, there is a lot of conflicting evidence there.
I wouldn't have thought it would be enough to completely rule out box damaged/seconds from Sony though, seeing as the OP of that link seemed intentionally evasive when it came to explaining how they handled the TV.

    • +9

Yeah I bought the 70in from Sony on a previous ozbargain deal (new tv, not a refurb/damaged one like this). Turned up box damaged, screen cracked. It was horrible dealing with Sony. Hours on phone with support.

First level support had no idea, had to talk with another team inside Sony to do anything. They wanted photos of damage but their system wouldn’t accept photos attached when I sent via gmail (jpg). Eventually shared a Dropbox link to them. Days waiting for confirmation of receipt, then more for refund. Plus the long waits on hold to their support line.

Definitely won’t buy from Sony online again. Not a great experience.

Got my money back eventually and got a tv locally from JB.

      • which tv did you end up buying and how much it cost?

        • I ended up getting the 75x8500f, but not at an ozbargain price unfortunately. After the poor experience with Sony online I just went haggling (TV was replacing one from lightning damage late last year and I was tired of waiting).

      • I had the same circumstance but a completely different outcome. Sony were really easy for me to deal with and they sent a Sony repair agent to replace the screen at my place in around 10 days. Sounds like I got lucky. Really happy with it, still going strong.

  • A few months ago I got the 55" X90F as "box damaged" in a previous deal and the only thing that was wrong with it was one of the box handles were broken. YMMV but I found it to be a worthwhile sacrifice for the savings.

  • +3

70" Sony (not "sony guts", actual Sony) for $1600??? Veeeeery tempting.

    • Can you explain "no "sony guts""?

      • Google "sony guts" and click on any of the hundreds of links.

It's a movie reference about actual Sony product vs a no name brand that is supposedly Sony inside.

  • +2

    I got an 55” A8F for about 1800 a few months back.
Mint condition. The box had a small wrinkle on the corner.

    No issues from me.

  • +2

I bought one of the a8f oleds in a previous "box damage" +20% off ebay deal.

Long story short, the box was perfect and sealed - as a few other people noted too.

My guess is they do this on stock they're having trouble selling through the Sony stores, but mark the ad as box damaged so other stores don't have to price match.

    • I've read that this store is to sell TVs that have been returned.

      • They may do that too, but marked as 'refurbished' or the like. I'd imagine it's unlikely they'd sell a customer return under 'brand new'

    • I had the same experience. Purchased a "box-damaged" A8F in the last deal and it arrived in perfect condition. No complaints whatsoever!

  • can i use this 49” TV as my pc monitor?

    • +1

If your desk is 2 metres deep, go for it.

    • +1

      I'm using a 55 at 1.5m, no worries.

  • "It fell off a truck"… oh, the good olde OzBargain days!

  • +3

Alright, I bit at the 70". Fingers crossed it rocks up OK.

  • I try to keep up with TV's but I've never understood the pricing of the Sony OLEDs are they really worth close to double the price of say LG or Panasonic?

    • Honestly, yes. Sony have equally good if not better TV's as the others you mentioned, but the software they use is so much better and more responsive.
Seems minor for the price, but if you plan to have this tv for a while, it's a huge relief not having to deal with piece of shit Samsung TVs with daily updates preventing the TV from being useful for an hour every time I turn it on just to watch Netflix - (profanity) YOU SAMSUNG annoying software.

Of course, a good Android TV box is probably cost effective enough to choose The lower cost brands. From what I've seen here, Hi-Sense seems to have a long way, and offer great technology and good software at a much better price.

      • +1

Still, that's just Samsung. I've read many good things about the LG branded OLEDs

        • My single experience is an annoyance. Parents curved 55 inch lg oled - everything is fine except for two things…

Minor issue - every time the TV power is fully disconnected, it reboots into 'demo mode' which has weird brightness and contrast. A bit hard for my parents to figure out how to switch it, and they insist on using those stupid power saving things parts of Victoria were handed out that turn things off completely if no remote button had been pressed for 4 hours.

Major problem - some apps, most noticable being Netflix, don't work. They just crash on launch. Been a couple years, tried every trouble shooting suggestion, still no fix. Common problem on the internet.
Again, can be solved with a Chromecast etc .. but it's an annoyance that I never experienced with Sony.

          • @Salmando: Fair enough. Surprising after all the love for LG OLED around here. Maybe everyone on OzB have chromecasts from deals ;)

      • You know Samsung got fined millions of dollars for purposely making their TVs worse with software updates… That should be headline news but only hear about it on tech blogs and small articles.

        • +2

Yes, Samsung has become another Apple over the years

  • Thanks. bought one

  • Sony 49" X75F LED 4K Ultra HDR Android TV (Box Damaged) sold out as well

  • The prices are showing up significantly higher when I click on the links provided. Am I doing something wrong?

    • +2

Perhaps missing the 20% off code OP has mentioned in the title?

      • And there we have it!. Thanks!

        • +1

No worries. Enjoy your new TV.

      • Champion. Thanks

  • I guess Sony are clearing out the A9F to make way for the A9G.

  • Z9F appears to be $4995 from harvey norman brand new.

  • What is the difference between the X75 and X70?

    • Android tv on the x75

  • Bad deal for box lovers! I kept, used and enjoyed my 65 inch plasma box for around 10 months

This is cheaper and you have full box as bonus

Wound have grabbed that 70 x83 in a heartbeat

  • 3k for x90 that's a good price

  • +1

Looks like they’ve added a few more models. Sort by recently added

  • Can anyone definitively tell me whether or not this 55 inch sony 4K does 60fps? Everything says 50hz but I did some digging and some are saying it is 60fps at 4k. I really don't wanna fork out for a tb I cant run at 60 fps.

    • supports 30/50/60hz at 4k according to Sony's user manual.

  • 70 was oos by the time i saw this. Serves me right. Will wait and get the next one.

  • Managed to pick up a 43" W660F new, no damaged box for $556 from https://www.ebay.com.au/usr/homeonlinesuperstore using PEOFY

    I love my x83F 70”

  • +1

Just bit the bullet on a Sony 75" X85F

  • where is the 85" ??

  • dammit, missed out on the 49" :(

any other similar deals on that model? couldn't find it for less than 800

  • Has anyone been able to track their item yet? I was sent a tracking number in ebay but it doesn't work on the toll website.

    • Try tracking it here: https://cview.dhl.com

eBay seems to always say Toll, but the Sony store often use DHL.

      • Thanks, that worked.

  • I just bought this via Ebay. tks for your info.
P/s: will ebay deliver and then install the TV for me?
    cheers.

    • Deliver,yes.
      Install, no.

  • I filled the code in the coupon box for the X70F one but got "This code can't be applied to your order.". Anybody has an idea why?

    • I just tried peofy and it applied.

      • Turns out the problem was that my account is not located in Australia. It seems harder to change it than to create another account :(

  • Sale continues for items that still have stock and now uses 20% eBay code PYLON for up to $300 off.

  • oh and Item arrived today box looks undamaged but will see if tv inside is still in one piece when I open later. There is instruction on top of box on how to unbox box.

  • How much better is the X90 over the X85?
Only 300 difference. (Although out of stock)
Wondering if the X85 is worth the outlay, considering 34% off vs 44% off.

    • +1

Big difference, full array vs edge lit. https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony

    • x85f as when we looked at the two models at JB-hifi. There was minimal difference to our eyes in terms of colour and brightness. blackness on x90f is better but coming from what we have 10+ years LCD our black on that was not that black so not loosing much. I did notice the oled version black is very black so contrast will be better.

For us it is good enough.

spec wise.. the x90 has more powerful processor so allow better response to android related stuff and image processing and Dolby atmos which we don't have anyway but you may need to consider for future proofing if you want to go big on audio. viewing angle is better on the x85f apparently from the rtings.com comparison test.

      • Thankyou
Have a large open plan, kitchen/dining/lounge in a rectangular shape, with the lounge/sofa at the far end facing across the room, so the wider viewing angle would be good, considering dining/kitchen
It's also a very bright and open area, alot of windows.

        • have same house config… that's why the x85 viewing angle was a consideration over the x90 but it's not by much so will see how it goes when setting it up. the newer models with the x viewable implementation apparently pretty good at cost of brightness slightly.
