43” Hisense UHD TV or Xbox One X 1TB or iPad 6th Gen 128GB Wi-Fi on Telstra $65 Plan (12 Months, 60GB, U/L Calls/SMS) @ JB Hi-Fi

2500

Another ridiculous deal from JB HiFi, available for new and port in activations. Your choice of either:

  • Hisense 43” UHD LED TV ($745);
  • Xbox One X 1TB Console ($499); or
  • iPad 128GB WiFi 6th Gen ($539)

On the JB HiFi Telstra $65 plan for 12 months (includes 60GB data, unlimited calls and SMS, etc.).

Several punters have been successful in switching over to the Telstra $69 BYO Plan with $20 of monthly discounts (making the plan only $49 per month). Nice work OzFam. :)

  • Can anyone speculate or clarify something for me?

I went in to JB to sign up for this today and when I mentioned to the staff member I was going to put the SIM in a Telstra 4GX Pocket Wifi Modem to use on a desktop computer at a rental property he told me Telstra would somehow detect that (either via the device MAC address or the fact I wasn't making any voice calls) and terminate the service under their FairPlay policy. I ducked over to a Telstra store and asked the same question about their $49 plan (with no mention of JB) and he said the same thing… they could detect that kind of usage and would likely terminate it or force me onto a different plan because they have specific data plans (that are more expensive). I subsequently read the FairPlay policy and note that it also mentions VPN use as something that can cause a termination so I'm 2 for 2 (I use a VPN half the time).

So stupid question: Does anyone know what they actually do and what the chances are of them actually doing it? My usage of the SIM would be about 40GB of data a month (50% via VPN) with no voice calls, SMS or MMS usage. Honestly I have no issues with them terminating the service 1 month after JB gives me a free TV but I don't want to be stuck on a plan I didn't select that I can't use my VPN with.

    Cheers

Get a cheap phone and that's your 4G modem you don't have to worry about them. I know you're not allowed to do that. I don't know if they do detect but I know it would be super easy the Sim has an identifier and they can definitely tell if it's running on their portable modem

    • I know Telcos CAN tell what device you're using to connect to their network. However, as for controls they have in place to monitor devices that aren't mobile phones - I am not entirely sure. If I were to speculate I would say that Telstra DO have those controls in place.

I like the idea though! Sign up, use mobile broadband, have plan terminated, pay nothing else!

      • I wonder if because the modem gives a reply that can’t accept calls. I wonder if modems that accept calls will be treated like a mobile

        • I'm definitely not the right person to ask but I would imagine the SIM is only part of the cellular authentication process. The device also has to identify itself at least through its IMEI. If the device doesn't relay any more information than that, then carrier can use databases to identify the device type.

      • A couple years ago I activated a prepaid phone Sim and used it with a huawei modem. It worked for one day & the next day I couldn't use the data anymore

    • I was perhaps a little unclear in my first post… I have no doubts that Telstra can tell I'm not using it in a phone… if nothing else I won't make any voice calls and the device it's in is probably easily identifiable from it's IMEI number. I'm more just wondering what the official stance is and how likely they are to do "something", and if they do, what the "something" will be. If they decide I can't use the 60GB per month I've bought in the specific device I bought to use it in that's fine and I'm happy to have the service terminated… but surely they can't force me onto some other overpriced service without my agreement…that feels like TIO complaint territory.

Probably get chased down the street by one of those Telstra vans if they catch you :O

      • I can't give you the 'official' stance, but I do know there are service integrity teams who do investigate breaches against the fair use policy. As for the specific action, I am unsure. I would imagine they would attempt to contact you as part of the investigation and may suspend your service whilst the investigation is open. Outright termination seems a little extreme to me.

        • Just to be clear I don't want the service terminated and am not trying to pull some kind of dodgy deal. I'm just in a rental with no fixed line, have a spare wifi modem and have too many devices to conveniently tether or hotspot. I find it farcical in 2019 that putting the sim in the modem is apparently (it's not clear) a breach of the FairPlay policy but putting the same sim in a tethered phone is NOT a breach. There's no logic in that argument and I have to just assume that if they did have an issue with it cooler heads would prevail and they'd rather keep a customer than not.

          • @tychocaine: Is there a limit to hotspot amount of devices? I would think that's a pretty good alternative plus you basically get a home phone in the same direct location?

I don't think they will terminate the contract if they caught on to you they would talk to you tell you it's not allowed. Could always ask live chat without giving them information in case you're worried.

  • Tethering via mobile is OK though?

    • Yes.

  • Another success story from live chat.

    • Welcome to the gang

  • So last day tomorrow for the instore sign up or have I missed the boat? Thanks guys

  • Does this deal end today the 19th or does it end on the Sunday the 23rd i’m confused. This post says the 23rd while the other 2 posts regarding this deal say the 19th and the Jb Hi Fi website says the 19th. It’s not clear to me as i want to get this Telstra deal and i’m not sure whether to go into Jb Hi Fi today or on Sunday.

    • I'm confused? My (this) post always had an expiry for the 19th?

      • Sorry what i meant to say was, This post says the 19th while one of the other two posts regarding this deal say the 23rd and the Jb Hi Fi website says the 19th. It’s not clear to me as i want to get this Telstra deal and i’m not sure whether to go into Jb Hi Fi today or on Sunday.

  • I could be wrong but it states on the website instore only and is 19th Wednesday

  • I signed up yesterday, and when I chatted online today telstra said my order went to error. Although I got an welcome email from telstra with my plan info.

    • Hi
      Can I know what happened?
I intend to go to JBHifi today to sign contract with them

      • Not sure. The live chat person suggested me to contact Jb. But I decided to ignore 🤔

    • http://www.my.telstra.com.au/myaccount/track-my-order. Put your order number in here and you should find out everything you need?

  • Can I return the item to get a gift card from JB Hifi. Given they use a gift card to pay for the item in store and receipt says payment method is gift card and refund only goes to the same payment method.

    • I doubt they'd let you return it under a 'change of mind' policy, and when I spoke to my phone rep at Jb hifi he said it was locked to that specific tv, meaning the cost of that tv was not transferable to another tv purchase, if I wanted to do that then the best he could do is the $500 gift card offer instead.

Myself & my wife are currently with Optus & out of contract. I've just been waiting for a good deal to come along.
I'm the account holder of both phones so I have the authorisation needed to sign both myself & my wife onto this deal. So I'm heading to JB on my way home from work, I have read the T&C's of this deal & can't see anywhere it states "limit 1 per customer". My question is, can one get 2 of these deals at the same time? Also, as my wife won't be with me when I go to JB, would one expect any issues not being able to get her number signed up to double up on this deal?

Friend, no limit on the amount of accounts, just checked with JB.

    • today is last day but yes you grab 2 tvs mate! then change both to $49 a month. sweet deal!

  • Can we downgrade to $49 with 30gb? I don't need the 60gb
I m struggling to use my 40gb per month with kogan.

    • what 30GB plan?

Don't mind to downgrade if less hassle than asking for $69 one

        • What's the point you'd be paying around the same per month for 60GB if you went to the $69 plan and got the $20 discounts?

        • I did this moonwalk, I use about 5GB a month so didn't worry me either.
Live chat and use your charm! It was pretty easy in the end.
The $49 plan was 15Gb BTW - not sure the bonus 15Gb will be added - It didn't for me.

          • @John Dough: Yes apparently the 30gb is a companion (additional service only), & you are correct the $49 plan comes with $15gb

            • @moonwalk: They do offer extra 5gb on $49 / 15gb plan…ask via chat.

  • double post

  • Amazing deal from JB. Got the $65 plan and chose free Ipad 128GB Wifi. Sold Ipad for $500 and switched to telstra $69 plan that is offered at $49 for new customers. So i have to pay 49*12= 588 but since sold free ipad at 500 so net cost is 88 and monthly cost is $7.33 😅

    • nice work mate!!! :)

    • Friend, how did you go with your plan switch? Signed up yesterday but haven't contacted live support yet.

      • I was fortunate on my first chat contact the guy was really helpful and accepted my request to switch to telstra $69 plan (offered at $49 with $20 discount) and also confirmed waiver of jb plan cancellation fee. however he couldn’t it becuase i was chatting around 11:30 pm and they were running the day end batch processing. So he confirmed to keep the chat receipt and contact with live chat today morning. I did that. Though the morning live chat guy offer me &59 treating me a telstra customer since i am with jb plan already. Then i referred last night chat and then he went through the chat history and gave me the discount. The reason live chat consultants reluctant to accept $69 plan at $49 since they need to have approval. Be nice with them, and keep trying till you get your desired discount.

  • I got the $65 plan and chose the TV. Went onto chat and changed to existing customer on the $59 plan. Today I saw the companion plan so tried my luck and done I’m now on that plan with a $10 discount making it $39 + 30GB.

    • probably a better option for a LOT of people! Nice work! :) … I struggle to use more than 20GB. lol

      • Fall asleep watching Netflix and have it set to keep playing so while you're sleeping you can basically dream episodes of Brooklyn 99 I have mad adventures.

  • Got the deal. Got the tv. Tried to get the $50 discount, finally settled on $59. Considering they issued a gift card to settle the bill for the TV, can we return the TV and get gc worth $745? Has anyone attempted it?

    • Did they offer you the gc with 745 credit?

      • They did not hand the gift card to me. However they issued a gc then used it at the pos to settle the bill.

    • Did you attempt it yet?

  • Thanks OP. Got the TV and switched to the $59 plan (same terms). Unfortunately I had no luck going to the $49 BYO plan as the chat agent said once I'm registered it would mean a re-contract. I didn't bother trying other agents. Happy with the TV and the overall price though.

    • Exellent news! :)
