100gig is getting up there, soon Aus will have affordable unlim plans

    • +2

      Again… :)

    • +7

you should see how horrendous the plans are in USA and Canada, especially Canada. Both data wise and price. Lmao!

      • +3

I'm over here at the moment, America really had gone backwards in so many ways!

        • +2

the mobile data plans are the least of their worries, that's for sure

        • +1

Yeah I'm here too - and recently got the 80gb deal with the 4gb data roaming/unlimited texts and calls. It has been SO GOOD arriving and just having a phone to use. Makes me feel way more at home and comfortable.

      • +4

Canada and Australia are screwed in different markets.

My parents in Canada pay $50/month for Gigabit internet (1-year contract renewed annually gets you $50/month compared to the $100+/month quoted price) but their $55 mobile phone plan gets them only 6GB/month (they were initially on a $60/month 10GB plan which recently increased by a whopping $10 to $70/month with no other benefits added). Meanwhile in Australia, I pay $60/month for 200GB of mobile data but $50 for crap internet speeds.

        • +2

True in some respects. I'm really lucky in that I get unlimited 100/40 mbps NBN FTTH for $60 from Optus, and speedtests usually get me 92-97 mbps, more so on the upper side.

Thank you to whoever that phone consultant was!

          • +1

            @TwentyTwoCarats: That's an excellent deal

            • @zol1: I know. It's non-contractual so technically they can take it away any second, but it's stuck on for almost a year now…

              • @TwentyTwoCarats: They have no reason to and risk losing you

                • @zol1: True I guess

                  • @TwentyTwoCarats: @TwentyTwoCarats how did you get that deal? I would change for that price

                    • @Mentem: Basically I used to be on 100/40 FTTH NBN for $90 on Optus. Then after my contract ran out, they made the exact same plan $110 (but it included some Optus TV crap that I did not need). So I made a huge fuss about how this is absolute BS and I'm gonna leave. After a bit of a spat, they said okay, as a one time courtesy, we're gonna give ya this same deal for $60. I reckon it was super lucky and I was ready to walk out of Optus anyway.

          • @TwentyTwoCarats: DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN! That speed!

    • Unlimited is BS - feels more limited than limits typically. Either they speed limit after a certain amount or its just always sluggish (ie 12mbps), very rare to see truly unlimited.

Make do with the 80-100GB haha

    • +2

I hope not unlimited, everyone will just hotspot their phones and stream Netflix and Stan.

      Network will be shit.

      • +2

I do that all the time on burner sims ;)

        • Don't you still need to pay for the data?

      • Perhaps they'll implement traffic shaping. You can see how they can easily monitor traffic with Optus' Data Breakdown feature unless you use a VPN but they could simply cap all of your traffic instead.

        • +2

Traffic shaping is the worst thing that can happen to users, i will never go to a telco that does traffic shaping.

          Internet should be neutral mate

          • +1

@nikoris: I don't want it either but that's my speculation that they'd resort to that if their cell towers are all being saturated and they're not keen on doubling up on capital costs.

          • @nikoris: That's fine - but pick one. Unlimited data with shaping at a decent price (so a company can still make money), or capped with no shaping for a decent price.

            • @hiredgun: I think shaping should be avoided at all cost, its a slippery slope and there is no way back.

    • With Optus, it all depends, what kind of signal you are getting in your location. I was getting from 5 to 40mbps on their 4G network with a latest phone and most of the time it was between 5 and 8mbps, so even 500gb of data is worthless in that case. I was forced to leave them.

  • About time we get some affordable plans with International Roaming included. Just be careful so you done go over your Data limit or if you are not in a Zone 1 country…

    • 4 GB should be enough for up to 4-day transits if roaming into Zone 1 Countries. Grab a local sim once you arrive in your hotel or airbnb. Swap it out once you are returning back to Australia

      • +1

I get 6 GB on my plan, was enough for a 10 day trip to Bali last year (had plenty of data left), and should be enough for my 3 week holiday in Sweden next month. Of course it depends how you use it, I mainly use it for Facebook, Messenger, Banking and Google Maps while I'm on the move. Anything else I use free WiFi where I stay.

      • +2

To be honest, 4gb is enough for a month as long as you turn on data saver, and don't mindlessly watch youtube / instagram videos, and just stick to messaging, maps-ing, light browsing of the web, and uploading social posts. Then get on WiFi to do all your video watching / heavy social media scrolling / Netflix & Spotify syncing.

  • This is awesome. Just upgraded my 20GB $40 per month to this. Great Find :)

  • can you get a student discount with this plan?

    • Optus, AFAIK, don't offer student discounts anymore.

  • +12

I think Optus has realised alot of people won't use anywhere near this

    • +6

I struggle to use over 15gb on my 200gb plan haha, specially when Spotify streaming is free!

    • +2

Yees I can confirm this is true.

I’m on a 200gb Optus plan and the most I get to use is about 80-90gb and that’s with deliberate excessive video streaming and downloading. It’s basically the same as having unlimited mobile internet, absolutely no monitoring or concerns about data.

I would say 100gb is the same so I will be moving to a sim only plan when my phone plan ends in January.

    • Yep same here. I watch youtube, Netflix and other streaming services everyday on my way to work and back (2.5 hrs a day) and my data use never go beyond 15GB.

      • Strange, doesn't HD video chew up about 1.5GB per hour? Even 720p is close to 1GB/h.

  • +3

The thing is when you exceed the data, Optus charged you $10 per GB. They don't allow you to stop using the data.

    • +1

That why you have to be mindful of your data consumption. They don't have a throttle option like Vodafone and Telstra. In saying that Optus offer the most data allowance per dollar out of the big 3 telco.

      • Plus they text you when you reach 25/50/100.

      • They have the most data allowance per dollar, but have the 2nd best coverage and overall quality service, Telstra still number 1

    • Much better than a few years ago where going over 1gb costed hundreds…

    • +1

There is also (or used to be) a big lag between when the data is used and when it shows up. That means it is easy to go over your limit and not realise. I had a new ipad and it decided to do all the updates. I got the 'you have been charged $10" message several times about 5 hours late. If it was on time I could have avoided $40 excess charges

  • +7

I think you can also get a $150 eBay gift card from here, it says 80GB but when you go to the checkout it says "20GB online bonus data included"?

That's if you aren't targetted for the Flybuys deal. Might be worth confirming with Optus.

    • Now I'm conflicted about joining this one or the Flybuys offer.

    • Worth a lot more than the flybuys! Nice

    • The flybuys include Google home though

  • +7

I prefer their previous deal which was the $50 plan for $40 ($10 discount). The $50 plan only included 80GB at the time, but you do get the benefit of 4GB of roaming data and unlimited calls and sms in Zone 1 countries. 80GB is more than enough data for me.

  • A few weeks back there was a $40 monthly 80g data promotion. That'd be the best, 100g would be too much for those who have internet at home. My mobile switches to NBN wifi automatically when at home and I'm no where near 50g usage. I actually watch YouTube lots.

    • I signed up to that that $40 one.
So bloody handy when I was travelling!!

haha and same, hard to use up the full 80gb when wifi is so abundant. I even force some apps to use mobile only and offline save Netflix on mobile, and watch kayo sports on mobile! lol

  • +1

I was with Vodafone Sim only 12 months plan - 30g for $50. signed it when plans were tightass with data, later on the data boom started and my plan became a joke.
I put up with it for 12 months, when in the very end since I didn't intend to continue with Vodafone, they offered me 100g for $50. I still declined it. I'm happy with Optus because Optus sports is bundled with it.

    • I feel that Optus sports (EPL) is the draw card for me too over Telstra. More generous with data that's for sure.

  • i'm on the 100gb $60 deal from yesteryear (get OS calls but only 500 min)

disappointed with this offer as Vodafone has 125gb for $65

was hoping they would at least match the data side of things

can see voda going to 150gb and hopefully Optus will come to the party

  • +1

And now $25pm for a data share sim
    Madness !!!

    • been waiting for the $5 to come back ever since… :(

      • @0jay said $5 setup fee for one sim

        • He also said it was dead :(

    • +4

The whole point of these plans (I believe) is that people probably only use 15-20gb of the 100gb total with the rest going unused.

So by increasing the upper total, it only slightly raises the average use over all users on the plan.

With data-sharing, if 4 people shared, that means you'd use 4 x the average (15-20gb) so 60-80gb of the 100gb meaning the unused portion starts actually costing them money.

So having a $25 minimum per sim, means they profit from the minimum use per user.

  • +5

This deal will go great with my 1c Razor 2

  • Anyone in the Sydney CBD with optus? Curious about the download link speeds and whether there's any throttling and decreases in performance during peak hours similar to Vodafone

    • I get close to 200mbps download with optus, Samsung s8.

  • Remember when Optus includes unmetered mobile streaming for free?

    • Not like that's going to be a problem on 100gb

      • +1

I'm on an 80gb Optus plan and don't have fixed home internet. Unmetered TV streaming for Netflix and ABC iView is like having double my data quota

  • Well, according to this Apple Music, as an example, uses roughly 1GB per 8.5 hours of streaming, so, we’re talking, what nearly 85 hours for 10 GB, which isn’t too bad. Each carrier seems to have their preference of data free streaming, Telstra is Apple Music, which is one of the reasons that I wanted to flip, but if data plans keep going cheap then I can probably stick with Optus, if they have another decent deal on a handset. I just missed out on iPhone 8 Plus, that was a December deal back in 2017 though, so I’ll just keep biding my time until I’m out of contract. I can’t work out why they offer good handset deals around late Dec though? I can understand EOFY but December doesn’t make sense to me.

    • +2

Probably to report healthy numbers for Q1 the following year. Plus I imagine people can be tempted a bit easier during the holiday period :P I know a few friends who got themselves "Christmas presents" via a contract deal

      • +1

That makes a lot of sense. I prob did get it as a bit of a gift to myself. Thanks for the reply :)

  • I just moved out of Optus after the connectivity in Western Sydney and other parts of Sydney started dropping and JB-Hifi came with $500 offer for Telstra.
Some places in Sydney CBD, Olympic Park, Strathfield to Rhodes, few places in outer Sydney has black spots for Optus, otherwise, it was ok.

    • Second this, the whole reason I have switched and never looked back no matter how good the deal is

  • Been on 100 for a year now never come close

  • Optus trying to hit back at Telstra… too bad their coverage is still 2nd best

  • Does Optus still offer data sharing SIMs?

    • Yep

    • +1

Spoke to Optus about this today. They will data share between SIMs of the same type (ie pre paid) so long as the SIM plan is active but the $5 setup per SIM with no ongoing is dead.

      • Are you sure $5 once off payment for a data share sim?

        • That’s what the sales guy said today.

          • @0jay: I find only $25/m sim only plan or $37/m 24m iPad plan is the cheapest to get a data share sim. $5/sim is too good to be true.

            • @BobGg: That’s what they offered me, the $25 SIM only plan as the minimal outlay for sharing.

I’m not sure when they stopped the $5 sharing SIMs but it’d make Optus a near perfect solution for me, I’d even deal with the max 30Mbps speeds I get here.

        • I got my first 3 for free in the early days of the scheme. Then another later for $5. They offered a max of 5 per service on same account. I have 2 services and am wishing now I got the full 10… Not sure what I would do with that many haha!

  • Thanx for this offer….

  • Good deal! I've been on contract with Optus for a Mate 20 Pro 100GB for $65/month - but without any internation calls/txts included. This deal is the next best thing! Not only does it include international allowances, but it's only a 12 month contract. It's evident we're closing in on unlimited plans at affordable prices, even if there's modest speed caps around 10-20 Mbps.

  • could you put this in a 4g modem?

    • LOL. Same question most threads. Yes. ;-)

      • Greg do you know the difference between this sim and the mobile broadband sim? Would this sim give better speed than the sim of the mobile broadband plan?

        • I've seen it mentioned many times on Whirlpool, and I'm 99.9% sure this is the basic guide:

          1. Any DATA plans with words like 'home wireless broadband' are restricted ('slow'), ADSL(1)-like speeds, AND require a specific programmed modem only from Optus for the SIM to work. This rules out using pocket wifi modems, a spare modem if theirs breaks, and probably also means inserting the SIM into your phone won't work either.

          2. Any DATA plans with words like 'mobile broadband' = unrestricted, full (fast), 4G/LTE speeds - faster than point #1 - and can be used in any modem/phone (as long as it has the correct frequency bands). If your modem has Cat 4, 6, whatever, it can combine frequencies to get super-speed compared to point #1.

          3. Any PHONE plans (those that come with calls) are the same unrestricted speed as point #2. So 2 & 3 (mobile data plans and phone plans) are the same 4G/LTE speed, are faster than #1, and can use any phone/modem that has the correct frequency bands.

I believe you're referring to #2 and 3, but I've listed all 3 types just in case, so you can work out which type/s you're looking at.

  • I have a few months left on my Optus phone plan. I assume I could terminate my phone plan, pay the outstanding handset costs, and sign up to this offer?

    • Why not just ask to upgrade your plan?

    • I literally just terminated my plan to do this. I didn't ask to upgrade though. They gave me a recycled number so I was happy to stop getting the hordes of calls from randoms. I only had to pay off ~$180 for the handset as I had three months left. Your contract might be different, but it's pretty much the cost of phone divided by your contract length, multiplied by how many months you have left. Your latest bill will give you an idea of what's left. Mine said GN8 (21 of 24)

  • My Telstra contract is up this week currently paying $69 for 40GB. I was considering just recontracting $69 for 90GB but this deal at least on paper looks great.

My question is I live in a share house with ADSL so I frequently tether my phone to watch a stream/sport etc. Can someone currently on Optus run a speedtest and let me know what speeds they get? I usually get 40-50mbps during peak time on Telstra. I live in Parramatta CBD so I assume coverage should be fine.

  • Im torn, sign up now or wait to see if I can double data in the next few weeks. I was expecting the $50/100GB plan though.

  • What's the likely hood of someone that recently signed up for the $50/80GB plan discount by 20% to $40 having the extra 20GB added to the plan without upgrading the plan?

  • Spoke to Optus chat and they stated that you can't have both discount on the service and they can't add free bonus data to a service. Might have a chat to my local store as when I ported from Virgin Mobile I was receiving Bonus data from them.

  • +1

100GB Monthly is Colossal! Plus Unlimited calls to 35 countries makes it even better.
    Do we even need NBN?

  • So this is now $45, I wonder what they will do next? Double Data!!! come on you can do it :D
