  • Good product. But for people want to use it on tv for best possible picture and sound quality. Wait for the new gen sheild.

Wait for the new gen sheild.

What does that one do better than this one?

Play games with Ray Tracing support.

        /s

        • Nintendo Switch upgrade with ray tracing CONFIRMED!

Normally the more expensive better then the cheapest one :P

      • +1

        Nothing, yet.
Its a rumor, same rumor says it will use the same SOC, yawn…

    • +1

Dolby vision and eARC support HDMI 2.1 just to name a few…

      • +2

Dolby Vision can be added now via firmware; it's a licensing fee Nvidia isn't willing to pay. If it comes to the new shield, it's because they're passing on that fee to the consumer.

eArc is not necessary. There's no need for audio return to the shield; it's a one way feed to the TV or AVR and I can't see why it would need to be anything more (though I don't know all the use cases, so perhaps I'm being short sighted here). As such, the old Shield already supports the transimssion of uncompressed TrueHD (i.e. Atmos) and HDR over HDMI 2.0. The absense of anything like Dolby Vision are either limitations of the android OS, applications not prioritising the updates or a lack of licensing. The hardware itself is capable.

As for HDMI 2.1, yes there's a benefit, as it will better support Dynamic HDR metadata and will theoretically allow for 8k streaming, or 120hz 4k streaming, which Nvidia Gamestream/Stadia may utilise in future. But there is no evidence to suggest that the new Shield will have HDMI 2.1 at this point from what I've read?

        • +1

I agree with you. For eARC, Dolby visions or even DD+ pass through et cetera, Some of these can be a lack of licensing and just need a software upgrade, but some requires a hardware update like HDMI 2.1. These features might not be important to you but it depends on individual users case. Anyway it's just rumours right now. I want it to be more convenient and capable to be able to replace my apple tv 4k which does Dolby vision and Dolby Atmos but lack of android.

    • New Nvidia Shield may support Google Stadia.

      • If only google had a Stadia release date for Aus…

        • 2020 :)

      • For the tits that think paying a sub and then paying full price for games that look worse and take 1TB for 65 hours of 4K HDR gaming is a good idea.

  • +5

Same price at Kogan - looks like a price drop across the board. Might be better waiting for Ebay weekend and hoping its stocked on a sellers site listed at 199 to apply any coupons.

    • I agree, seems to be fairly across the board since they announced next gen. It's been $180 a few times before and $160 at least once. If I didn't already have one I'd be waiting for those prices.

  • +2

New Gen shield will be a minor upgrade, at $200 current Shield ticks a lot of boxes for me.

    • Source?

    • Once new gen is released or spec is confirmed price will drop further

  • how come ebay sellers not matched price yet? already have one, but thinking of getting another?

    • +2

You mean like their sister company Futu Online whose got it for $299!

  • I might be missing something, but how do you get free shipping?

  • The Plex client for Android is woeful, I have tried Kodi using Plex Kodi Connect and that is turning out to be a bit clunky.

Is there any decent offerings for a front end that can be used with the shield to hook into a Plex backend running on my nas?

It just needs to look half decent with good functionality to appease the wife…… So simple also gets put into the mix as well I suppose.

    • Hit me up in DMs with the issue you're having. I can lend you some (hopefully new and useful) advice on the PLEX front. I have no experience with Kodi though so that might be a deal breaker.

    • +1

Really the Plex client isn't good enough? I don't know if there will be much better.

I am just running Kodi connected to my network attached storage to stream directly and think that is simple and functional enough.

      • Agree. Plex is not needed but improves UI for those that want that. Or use a Kodi skin. I think the hard thing for some is setting up an SMB share for Kodi to access.

        • +1

SMB on Kodi under the Shield has issues.
I'm a Microsoft System admin and I can't even get it working.
It will speak to some PCs/Servers in my house, but not my main Windows Server 2016 server.
          Very disappointing.

I believe there are some work around involving forcing old protocols and security, but I've moved to Plex anyway now.
Now if only the Plex client on the Shield was as good as the Apple TV, I'd be very happy…

I'm an Android/Windows/Linux enthusiast, but for Plex and catchup apps, the 4K Apple TV is much nicer to use, as much as I hate to say it…

          • @Danthemanz: That's a shame mate. Bloody technology. Literally faultless from my DS918+ NAS and PC… After a nightmare working out how to setup SMB that is!! Both SMB shares over ethernet to Shield and 5Ghz to VTV working fine.

            • @Xizor: Yeah it sees my NAS fine too, but it only gets new files updated overnight in my setup so it's annoying.
Microsoft invented SMB, you think they could bloody support Windows.
It's likley more of a Linux SMB3 support issue.
To be honest I haven't tried too hard to fix it. The old leaky sink metaphor…

      • Plex works really well, it's just that the aesthetics and functionality is a bit clunky. I have a Plex client running via my older Samsung TV (not Android) and it works really well and looks really good.

Its just that the Android / Shield version isn't as good. Which is a shame as the Plex client on nearly all other formats looks awesome.

        • The new Apple TV interface is without a doubt the best. Looks great and easy to get around.
Hopefully it will flow to other platforms.

    • I had issues with Plex buffering, it's a known issue in the Nvidia and Plex forums.

I looked at alternatives, the main one is called Emby so check it out.

I had issues with Emby too, ended up just using an app called Nova Video Player and accessing my files as an SMB share and it works a treat for me. I even trained the girlfriend how to use it.

      • +1

For media file I find the only thing that copes with large volumes is:
        1) SMB share
        2) Organized directories
        3) Symbolic links

Yet to see a usable DNLA server that can handle more than a few thousand files without slowing down and choking. Media library indexing is awful. I don't need a library or pretty thumbnails if I keep my directory structure organized.

I am a nutty photographer have hundreds of thousands of images. I've shot 11,000 photos in a single day on more than one occasion (usually at airshows).

    • Can’t use just plain Kodi? I found it was really simple and the missy & kids have not probs.
I do have Plex, but ithe UI whilst pretty, wasn’t so easy to use.

Kodi, I just have a TV & Movie folders (I removd all the music, add ons , etc options - they don’t need to know -my add on are in the favourites), then everything is in alphabetical order. Really easy to use with a remote.

      • Exactly this. Anyone buying an android tv box and not using kodi (or plex, but some have issues with it) is likely not setting their stuff up properly and causing themself the actual problems. You do not need to go use other apps unless for personal taste/UI prefs. But even so, Kodi has skins. Kodi literally is your one stop shop on an android box as far as local media goes.

    • MX Player works pretty well over network without all the Plex bits.

Looks like shipping isn't free…in that case, you may be better off with the one below from Dick Smith for $204 delivered with code PLINK for eBay Plus members:

This, Xbox one X or Intel i5 nuc. I have the nuc already th..

    • +3

      That's some random options…

    • -2

The NUC is the most powerful option, Shield next.

Shield is an out of the box experience though, PC requires some setup.

Wonder if the NUC capable enough to run an Android VM and have Anroid apps?

  • Same price at Kogan: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/nvidia-shield-tv-streaming-medi…

Can't vouch for shipping price, but you can get QFF points at least.

    • And afterpay

  • The only reason I want to get this is for Plex Server but in other threads/comments someone said that it is not that powerful. Currently I have an Intel NUC acting as Plex server and it has problem transcoding and burning in subtitles - I presume due to lack of grunt.

Can someone who has run Plex Server using Shield confirm/deny?

    Thanks.

    • +1

As a server? I thought you would only use this as a player. It doesn't have dedicated encoding hardware as far as I know.

    • +1

I have been using my Shield as a Plex server and can stream 4k content with no issues. It works well. But that's just my experience.

  • Def wait for similar prices to last time. Especially with new model coming out

    • Agree, I've decided to wait for the new model as well and its pricing. Especially it's rumoured that it support Google Stadia.

Worse case scenario (if too pricey), I'll just fall back to the older model (hopefully still around) which should be cheaper then or at least the same price.

  • Hey can anyone explain what this product is used for? Is it like the Android boxes for example 'MINIX NEO U9-H Media Hub' where you can stream live tv via apps. If so is it better or worse than the MINIX NEO U9-H Media Hub?

Thanks in advance, I apologise in advance as I don't know a lot about these products.
