Quorn Frozen Vegan Hot & Spicy Burgers $4 (Normally $7) @ Coles

870

Quorn's Hot & Spicy Burgers for $4 at Coles nationwide. I love these. They're the best meat-free chicken burgers that actually taste like a chicken burger. I heard KFC are using Quorn-like patties for the vegan chicken burger they have in the works. Worth a try.

These and beyond beef are not terrible

    • +14

The products are getting better all the time. I'm in Europe at the moment and the range of products here is incredible. Even at major supermarkets where sometimes 1/5th of the cold section is vegan. Vegan cheeses here are amazing.

Nutrition wise beyond beef is a disaster waiting to happen when U see ingredients list

      • +11

Good point but beef isn't any better

Water, Pea Protein Isolate, Expeller-Pressed Canola Oil, Refined Coconut Oil
2 main ingredients water and pea?

        • +2

          Its…. beyond beleef

        • +1

Not sure why you’ve only listed the first four ingredients. Here are the remaining ingredients:

Cellulose from Bamboo, Methylcellulose, Potato Starch, Natural Flavor, Maltodextrin, Yeast Extract, Salt, Sunflower Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Dried Yeast, Gum Arabic, Citrus Extract (to protect quality), Ascorbic Acid (to maintain color), Beet Juice Extract (for color), Acetic Acid, Succinic Acid, Modified Food Starch, Annatto (for color).

          • +2

@ChickenTalon: When you list the ingredients it might seem scary but all of this are derived from plants and have gone throgh decades pf testing and usage in the food industry and in society previously.

Cellulose is in most plant food we
eat provides texture without the calories (think fibre) and why your veges have a nice crunch, potato starch well that gives a crispiness when grilling or frying and is pure carbs. Maltodextrin is pure carbs like sugar (probably from corn) but in this case it may provide soft texture when cooking and possibly to aid in shape and transport in low temperature, yeast extract for umami, (think vegemite),salt, vegetable glycerin is there to provide hydration but not really for sweetness so probably adds to a better mouthfeel as well maybe aid in digestion. Gum arabic is from a plant and its a stabiliser so will keep the shape of the food, Annatto is a seed from the anatto plant gives orangey red colour, acetic acid is vinegar beetroot juice is well…, citrus extract probably lemon, ascorbic acid aka vitamin c (so scary).modified food starch is possibly corn starch of some sort probably for thickening and to add calories.

Yes they start off as powders extracted from plants but so is flour. Its not "chemicals" because everything you eat are chemicals anyway.

            • @BumbaT: Sure and I'm not arguing either way about any of the ingredients. But listing a small subset of the ingredients and claiming "2 main ingredients water and pea?" is deceptive. Also not saying chemicals are bad because they are chemicals.

Also deceptive to claim "decades of testing and usage in the food industry and in society previously". Some of these ingredients have been transformed substantially to create a look/feel/taste analogous to meat. Much of this would be unknown and very few of them studied independently to determine long term impacts on human health. They might well be fine, but I wouldn't say it's all settled.

I keep seeing people warning about Beyond Meat ingredients but when I looked up the ingredients, nothing really set off any alarms. I've seen professional nutritionists warn against eating it too often due to its use of coconut oil, which is a saturated fat, but eaten in moderation they claim it is perfectly safe. What ingredient is it exactly that we should be concerned about?

    • +2

These vegan burgers contain no vegans? False advertising!

    • +5

What do you think Cheese is?

Vs beef made from growth hormones? And God knows what else.

What do you think mushrooms are?

    • Delicious mould! Love this stuff

  • +8

I've had their bbq sausages and they're pretty nice. I'll have to give this a go

    • +5

      These are damn delicious!!

    • +5

Ah my bad I meant the veggie delights. I think I've had Quorn before though. There's so many brands now it's pretty great

  • I have tried multiple Quorn products before and they were all terrible. these are better?

    • +5

As someone who is plant-based, not a fan of the Quorn vegan range. Fry's are much better.

      • I didn't like Fry's at all, I prefer Linda McCartney.

        • -3

Linda McCartney sausage rolls are amazing! Just make sure you cook properly and paint beaten egg over the top.

    • +5

Personally, I find marinated tofu tastes better than any of these mycoprotein products.

      • +3

I had buffalo cauliflower tonight and enjoyed it, I think I'll experiment with cauliflower for a bit. I thought I hated cauliflower from when I was a kid, but I preferred it to all of the mock meats. Good texture and the flavour is inoffensive and can take on the flavour of marinades.

        • +3

Cauli is fantastic. A whole roasted head, battered and fried schnitzels, as mince in tacos, etc. Such a useful ingredient - cauli's prime time will come.

  • Are these vegan or just vegetarian?

    • +6

      Vegan

    • +3

Vegetarian. The giant 'Vegan' label on the box is just for marketing.

      • -2

Like I actually look at link haha

    • I guess that depends on what level of awareness you would ascribe to fungi and how much importance you put on the fact that they “are genetically more closely related to animals than to plants”. [Edit: added info and link]

      • +1

And if the said fungus is kept in the dark and fed bullshit… Which is technically from an animal

      • Pretty much no awareness lol

        • Lolll u got it!

  • +2

These are good for Quorn. Vegie delights are the best for me followed by Fry's.

  • +4

The whole (frozen) Quorn range is $4 at Coles this week.

The VEGAN ones are clearly labeled VEGAN on the front. The rest are only vegetarian.

    • +2

      … and?

      • -6

        ewwww

        • +12

I'd rather eat this than a ground up corpse, but to each their own I guess.

    • Yum.

    • Welcome to the future…?

      • +2

With overpopulation, pollution, deforestation, rising sea levels, etc. yup, that’s your future.

        • +2

It's not even as bleak as that. People naturally gravitate towards the cheapest alternatives if there's no real difference. (looking at this site, for example).

Mycoprotein is going to be, once it's scaled up to industrial levels, much cheaper than living animal protein. If the taste and texture is basically comparable, most people are going to opt to save the few dollars/kg instead of standing on some kind of loyalty to 'real' meat.

    • +6

So pretty much the same process as beer and wine brewing?

    • +12

If you're worried about mould then you may wanna steer clear of various cheeses, mushrooms, alcohols, and (surprise) meats!

      Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mold#Food_production

    • Yeah so you hate mushrooms too i gather?

    • +1

As someone who grew up on a cattle farm and been to meny an abattoir, I can assure you that this is the lesser of two evils

  • +3

These are great. There's a few new Vegan products in the range too. I had some sausages and some "fish" fillets last week, they were pretty good.
I'll definitely be stocking the freezer at $4 a pop!

  • +3

A lot of quorn hate here.

As an avid meat eater I actually rate the quorn range, the macros are great and I actually prefer quorn mince to all meat mince products, this doesn’t include burgers and like but spaghetti bolognese and chilli’s etc.

Can’t beat a beef steak yet however give science time.

    • The Quorn mince is the best and really FANTASTIC.
I fooled my Uncle (who is anti-vegetarian) by convincing him the mince was real beef. Now he may change his mind about Quorn!

      • Truly,

Many people have doubted that it's not meat when prepared well, especially compared to a poor quality supermarket mince (Fat is flavour people!) Can't beat the texture of Quorn mince for my money. The Quorn fish sticks on the other hand are disgusting and nothing like fish.

  • I tried this and whatever, taste nothing like meat, and all you guys saying it does are deluded. I got them less than half price at Woolies and never again.

    • +6

This isn’t meat, any more than apple isn’t pear. It’s an acceptable analogue for those who want to use vegan ingredients in non-vegan recipes. There’s no shortage of vegan recipes.

    • -1

      Der

  • Quorn schnitzels are pretty good. The nugget product doesn't really taste like meat however, and I think it has a bit too much spice (maybe garlic?). Quorn lasange tastes 99% like the real meat product.

I can't wait to try the Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat products. They're so slow getting here…

    • The plant-based (vegan) Beyond Burger is in Coles right now. $12 standard price.

      • +1

They had them for $6 this week

      • Yes those are amazing!

The beetroot burgers are delicious in burgers as well.

    • I’ve had the Beyond Meat at Grill’d and it was great. On its own you could tell the burger patty was different but all together it was un detectable.

  • I nuked a couple of these the other day and ate without anything else as a very quick snack to feed the worms. Good enough but better in burgers obvs.
