Surely there's got to be a compromise somewhere in the specs for a price like this?

    • VA panel I guess (seems like IPS ideal)

      • +7

IPS is only ideal for colour accuracy when viewing from an angle.

Black levels on IPS panels tend to be horrific. If VA improved its own motion blur issues just a tiny bit more, it would be the clearly superior tech. Two or three years ago the answer was very different, but LG, Samsung and AUO have made big strides, due to VA being a consistently excellent choice for TV panels.

For gaming, TN is still king for motion, VA is king for contrast (and thus black levels). IPS is only king for people who slump in their chairs while at their desk.

        • +1

Oh right didn't know this thanks

        • Has VA improved since probably 3 years ago?

          Seriously considering a VA panel.

    • This is a video review from an older thread.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Po-lvL9feZU - same monitor different branding.

I have been doing a lot of digging with this monitor because I didn't really want to drop $499 (original price) on something that was poorly made.

I think from everything I have read, It is great value for money and does what it says it will. There are a few comments about it having dead pixels/stuck pixels etc but most reviews from people who have it say that isn't the case.

I have been using this screen for several months, and I'm pretty happy with it.

Feel free to ask any questions.

    • +2

      ohhhh I like these.

      Pros and cons?

The only real cons I have seen from reviews is the stand isn't adjustable and the screen isn't as bright as it could be?

      • +5

Yes, the stand is very strong and stable, but no adjustment. I don't personally have any issues with brightness, I don't run it anywhere near full brightness and it's fine….but my PC is in a darkened room.

My only other complaints are that the inputs are relatively limited, and the ports are recessed inside the body so they're a bit annoying to plug cables in. I wish it had a USB hub.

My primary use is FPS gaming, and it's been great for that. G-Sync works without any visible glitches using Freesync compatibility very nicely.

PS I'm under no illusions that this is a top-quality product. But I think it compares pretty well to much more expensive screens, and makes my gaming hobby/habit more enjoyable at a very reasonable price.

        • You can pop off the plastic cover on the back to give you much better access to the inputs. I'm talking about the cresent-shaped piece of plastic on the back.

        • VESA?

          • @MasterScythe: Yes, it has VESA mounting points - from memory it's the 100x100 mounting pattern.

        • I went through 2 of these before returning for refund as it wasn't quite right with G-Sync, if you had high frames it's ok, but if your frames are varying a lot within the free-sync range, there's a noticeable brightness flickering due to the lack of variable overdrive. This was on a 1080 ti.

          • @BattleSpunk: What did you say since it's marketed as a Free-Sync monitor? That it wasn't working with Freesync?

            • @Zazer: Basically just that the variable refresh rate didn't work as it should. The second one I just asked for refund as they were all gonna do the same thing.

    • is the curve shit to look at? i have a 27" screen from 2010 so it has thicc borders and 0 curve im just worried the curve would make me hate it

      • +5

The curve is virtually invisible for a single user sitting right in front of it. You won't notice it beyond the first hour of use.

If you're sitting back, or two people viewing it at once, the image does look a little weird due to the curve. It's not ideal for several people watching a movie.

This is almost never spoken about. I own a oled, qled, and led display. The LED display is a very awesome gsync xb270hu. Perfect motion clarity and the best response ips display, even if its getting a bit old.

And I can say from using that gsync display for a long time now, that the colours on a LED screen are basically piss. Everything is a fluorescent kind of blue. This means that reds, yellows, greens, are all muted and seem somehow fake or printed. This does not bother 99% of people. Qled mostly fixes this. It's not oled levels, but it's significantly closer.

While i love my high performance gsync led screen, un-natural colors are something i'd never recommend. And that's why these cheap led monitors are not something i would recommend either.

A va panel with quantum dot is the visual sweetspot at the moment. The quantum dots fixes the saturation issue of VA. And you get the contrast ratio as a bonus.

Just make sure the screen you get has a good adaptive sync range if you DO take my advice. Or make sure you can edit it via CRU before purchasing.

Motion clarity is important, and my LED screen has pretty much the best there is, however if something is washed out with bad colors, a monitor becomes more of a tool, and less of an immersion device. It completely changes the way you consume content. You end up playing esports without realising why. It's because the games with immersive visuals don't HAVE them on your screen, so you gravitate towards the thing the screen is good at.

    • So for someone who is budget conscious (but will pay more if it is super worthwhile) who simply dicks around with R and Rimworld, running off a NUC, what would you recommend?

      I was thinking a 4K something so I can cleanly upscale 1080.

      • I dont think there's a 4k 27" 144hz…. the closest is a 32" 4k unit that's easily $1k.

The closest to this that's brand name is the Samsung 27 which has all the above features but its about $100 more.

I havent looked at shipping but once you put in shipping you may as well pick up the Samsung 27" local.

Still stuck at 2k but eh…

        • 27" is actually the standard panel size for 4k 144Hz monitors at the moment.

The Samsung has gone on sale before for about $80-$100 more including delivery, and lower still if you've had discounted gift cards (though that same logic can be applied to Kogan purchases).

This is outdated - and occasionally wrong - information.

There's only one QLED VA panel that would meet such requirements consistently as of today (Samsung 27" CHG70), and it still has issues in the 70-90 Hz range due to inherent drawbacks that still exist with VA technology.

I agree that current AUO IPS panels are overhyped, likely due to people upgrading from garbage TN panels, but all three major LCD techs are making significant progress.

VA is a solid choice for 60 fps, cinematic gaming, and it's not total garbage for 120 fps gaming anymore, but people should be looking at the updated TN panels that are coming through as well.

Finally, unless you're holding out for an OLED monitor, HDR feature sets are not something that should be targeted. Local dimming options are still awful for gaming purposes (creates a halo effect, particularly around the cursors/crosshairs), and that's probably something you won't unsee until it's virtually at a per-pixel level. Wide-colour gamut is great though, but adoption of that for Windows and gaming is going to take time, so make sure any monitor like that comes with good sRGB emulation for use in the mean time.

The ultrawide monitor 1440p 100hz VA) is $509~

The step below this (1440p 75hz IPS) is $278~

From memory. They're pretty great specs/value and, most importantly, have VESA mounts.

  • How does this compare to other 144hz 1440p monitors? Is it worth shelling out for a more expensive monitor over this?

    • It compares pretty well - that's why it's a good buy at this price. It is missing a few features (very limited adjustments on the stand, no USB hub, only a couple input options) but it uses a decent quality panel and gets the job done.

If faster/variable refresh rate is what you're looking for, it's worth considering.

Looks like it's cheaper via ebay for ebay plus members using code "panther" coming in at $374.22‬ delivered for me

I pulled the trigger on this a few weeks ago. Very happy with it, happy to answer any Q's :)

Bought mine on Monday and a Vesa mount. Should be here tomorrow can't wait

      • What do you think? And where did you buy the Vesa?

        • +1

          Hey I love it!

I can not fault the screen what so ever. The colours are great and the screen is pretty bright as well which is good. Since I was coming form a 65hz screen, games are so much nicer and easy on the eyes.

I bought the Vesa mount from Officeworks. A little bit pricey but I wanted something that would last and it has great cable management on the mount.

          • @adamshere: Thanks mate, I might pick one up myself. The kogan stand is ghastly

            • @Junglegreen: Man if you dont mind dishing out the money it is worth it. I brought two for my other monitor as well and my desk looks so clean now.

  • Don't suppose anyone has tried overclocking past 144hz?

  • I just pulled the trigger on this as I got free delivery (normally $20 to my address) with code TREAT

  • I was going to buy this but 5ms response time is too slow

    • You really don't notice it at all.

  • still active?

    • Expired now sorry mate

      • bugger, figured. please click expire, thanks

        • I was looking for that after your comment. How can i?

          Edit: done now
