TomTom Start 42 and 52 $35 (RRP $149) @ Officeworks (Clearance)

800

Wow! A great price for a standalone GPS. JB has the 42 listed for $149, the Start 52 $169.

EDIT: Got to the checkout and they said they didn't have the Start 52 in stock as listed on the ticket, but they DID have the Start 42 (this is not displayed on shelf). Still a good deal so I went through with it. Pick up the Start 52 ticket to get a Start 42.

EDIT 2: it looks like this deal is available at all Officeworks with stock available for the 42 and 52 models. Others have posted receipts of their purchases of the start 52 model at other branches.

Or, free with a 6" screen on my phone. It is a great deal, but it just goes to show how the smart phone is killing off certain product groups.

    • +21

I bought this one because my dad is, for some reason, totally technologically incompetent with smartphones but for some reason he's happy to have a standalone GPS.

A very good father's Day prezzie for him…

      • +2

So is my mother…but still finds a smart phone easier…ad more reliable…especially with traffic updates…than these now antiquated bits of tech.

Whatever works for sure…just surprised as phones are a lot easier to figure out…and use (touch verse press screens on tom toms)

      Illegal for P-platers in VIC.

And how can I text and drive while using my phone GPS? /s

      • +11

Oh yea, never thought of the texting thing. Come to think of it, I wouldn't be able to watch Netflix like I usually do on the freeway either.

        • +1

Yeah, I like to use my GPS to navigate (mostly for speed) when watching Netflix on the freeway.

          • @Tuftsdude: Is it really illegal for mobiles even when mounted to display GPS on P' s in VIC? I never knew that, thought it only was illegal for all drivers to touch the mobile phone

            • +2

@cute as duck: Not many know it, but yes… it is illegal for 'Learner, P1 and P2 drivers'.

Taken from Vicroads: Learner, P1 and P2 drivers must not use a mobile phone (hand-held or hands-free) for any function while driving (including while stationary but not parked).

              https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/driver…

            • +1

@cute as duck: Yes it is. I got pulled over for speeding once on my P's, had a phone running Waze and a GPS. Threw the phone away before copper saw it, he mistook my GPS for a phone and says: "You know it's illegal to have your phone mounted…"

              Me: "That's not a phone, that's a GPS"

And I got off for that and copped a nice three hundred & sumthin fine.

      • umm..my phones maps reduce to a smaller screen when I use secondary apps.

      • +3

Illegal in NSW as well, even mounted properly and not touched.

    • +1

P-platers can’t use their phones for GPS.

So, until laws change there will still be a market for stand alone GPS.

  • +1

I would suggest using your old android phone (if you have one) as GPS. You can download either from google map, offline map, here wego or any offline capable map and keep the map updated everytime there's wifi.

    • Can I use an old android phone without a SIM card as GPS? I have an old Galaxy S5 and thought it's useless without SIM.

      • +3

Yes you can save google map offline. Just need to have the discipline to refresh it every few months.

      • +4

Yes. Just have the setting to GPS instead of WiFi and SIM network.

      • +2

You can even open your hotspot on your main phone then you can enjoy online map by connecting you old phone "automatically" every time. (Only the very first time you need to pair them).

      • +2

Have a hotpot on your actual mobile and connect the S5 using the wifi hotspot. Live maps

    • I used to do this on windows phone (it has great offline maps and is very readable). But I got done by a policeman on a bike for it, and now especially with the strict phone laws..I use dedicated GPS.

      • Are you a P plater? Because full license holders can use GPS on phone.

        Fully licensed car drivers

A fully licensed driver can use a phone to make or receive a phone call, to use its audio/music functions or perform a navigational (GPS) or intelligent highway vehicle system (in vehicle warning system) function but only if the phone:

is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle, or

can be operated by the driver without touching any part of the phone, and the phone is not resting on any part of the driver's body.

        • Wow, I didn't know a P plater can get into trouble using phone as GPS in other state.

WA rule seems to be ok. source

      • +2

But I got done by a policeman on a bike for it, and now especially with the strict phone laws..I use dedicated GPS.

For this reason, I got a cheap 7" Android tablet for the car.

        • Yea, i think the a tablet like that would be a grey area, possibly can fine you for some other thing.

According to the website on Vicroads "Mobile phones and other mobile devices (e.g. DVD players, tablet computers, Smartwatches) are major sources of distraction for young drivers, especially as these drivers are still building experience and developing skills."

          https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/driver…

Although they don't explicitly say "no" to other mobile devices, they can maybe pin you for "unsafe" driving or something.
Maybe under the "All drivers face tough penalties for illegal use of a mobile phone or interacting with other units that have visual displays while driving (e.g. DVD players or tablet computers) that are not driver's aids."

Technically you are "interacting" with the tablet computer. lol.

          • @lplau: It is only used for navigation, and audio. e.g. Waze plus Spotify.
Same sort of thing as other cars' built-in display.

            • @bargaino: Probably, i'm just quoting Vicroads. They may see it as being a "tablet computer". You may say "oh its the same thing as car's built in display", but technically it isn't since you can do so many more things with a Android Tablet vs your car's display.

Plenty of "technicalities" there, so if you were caught by the coppers when they were having a bad day and wanted to punish somebody, then you may just get done for that.

              • @lplau: There are laws against touching a mobile phone in some states.
I'm in WA. If it is not a mobile phone, the onus is on them to show you were careless/distracted.

    • I am interested in speed camera locations, which dedicated GPS does quite well. To my knowledge my phone's google map doesn't report fixed cameras yet.

      • Google maps has speed traps and crashes on android at least. Add the comment after you drive past.

      • +2

Use Waze for GPS instead of Google Maps. It’ll also tell you about road hazards and has better route mapping than Google.

    • do any of those give warnings for speed cameras?

      • +1

I use HERE maps for that which notifies if there is a safety camera ahead.

      • You should’ve gone to the Tontine sale today and got a Doona. Some pretty good prices.

      • +1

Don't worry, got a few good blankets which were sufficient for a -2C night on my way here

    • so both version 42 and 52 on sale?

      • Looks like it, 42 and 52 are $35.

  • R updates available via Mac OS X 10.14 .. maybe not???

  • +3
    • Sick (profanity)!

  • +2

Upvote for a great deal, but waze killed TomTom & they failed to adapt. Shame, they had the best visual way of displaying navigation

    • TomTom is now available on CarPlay if you have that in your car and miss TomTom but they messed with the old TomTom display

      • +1

Nah, I'm done with them. I paid for their app, was most expensive app I ever bought… They converted it into a 12m subscription then booted me off TomTom.

So nah, done, but thank you !

        • What's the go with map updates if you buy this Tom Tom, 12 months free then pay subscription or lifetime updates (whilst still in business!)?
Had a very quick look at their website and says quarterly map updates but unclear if you have to pay.

And trust OW site to be down, grrrrr.

          • @alidli: Also want to know

          • @alidli: Lifetime map updates are included, released quarterly per annum. Map updates are free (included) for the life of the product.

            From the Tom Tom website:

            • What does lifetime mean?
Lifetime is the useful life of the device, which means the period of time that TomTom continues to support your device with software updates, services, content or accessories. A device will have reached the end of its life when none of these are available any more. The useful life of the smartphone app means the period of time that TomTom continues to support the app with updates. Lifetime Services can only be used on the device or app they have been purchased with and cannot be transferred to another TomTom device or app.
            • +2

@Impulse Buy: Lifetime is actually only a couple of years as it is how long TomTom considers the product still in production as soon as they update it or release a new model the old one is obsolete and its "lifetime" has ended.

              • @BigglesKDH: It must be close to 10 years ago but I discovered that with a different brand.
I had owned the product for less than a year when they decided to drop support for the product, I couldn't even pay for maps if wanted to.

              • @BigglesKDH: Our lifetime support experience is that it is more than a couple of years and, when they did obsolete our old model, we got a pretty good deal on our new one. Peoples choices here but we find Tom Tom, with traffic info, pretty good but I prefer the big screen ones.

              • @BigglesKDH: My TomTom standalone GPS has just this year been retired by them. I bought it in 2013.

Even last year, they still provided me with a replacement windscreen mount when the suction cup on mine had perished due to the sun. I was impressed with that level of service.

  • +1

I don't even need this but the ozbargainer in me wants it hahaha

  • I need one but I'm in Sydney :/

  • +1

    Waze = $0

  • Also cheaper then many bicycle computers, do they do anything this wouldn't?

Was hoping it had a Bluetooth handsfree feature but alas it does not. Would have potentially made it useful, cheap Bluetooth hands-free units that are decent are hard to come by

  • WARNING
Does NOT include Lifetime FREE map updates.
Looks like just the 1st one free if its not the latest. You pay for map updates. Pay for speed camera alerts. pay for everything in fact.

DOG PRODUCT. WORST CHOICE OF GPS.
Thats why they cant sell them so they are on clearance

So this is actually a VERY EXPENSIVE purchase past the first 3 months

    • +1

According to the TomYom web site for the Start 52. Map updated are free for the life of the product. Cameras need to be renewed after the first 3 months from first activation.

    • +2

Mine has lifetime maps, from the box: Lifetime Maps - Use a PC with Internet connection to update your maps 4 times a year at no extra cost, for the life of your product. For details: tomtom.com/lifetime | Map coverage included: Australia, New Zealand, SE Asia (includes Bangkok, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macao, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei Darussalam)

Speed camera updates are only for 3 months before you have to buy a renewal.

  • Any store with stock in Victoria?

    • Looked like plenty of stock for the Start 42 at the Mentone store. Fitzroy apparently had stock as well.

  • this is crazy, my tomtom via mount worn out, the genuine replacement sells for $30 something, pls give me one of these

  • Reconsidering this bargain as model seems over 3 years old and may be about to be ditched for map support- https://www.oxgadgets.com/2016/07/review-tomtom-start-52-the…

Also found this about TomTom on Wikipedia, which other companies probably do as well- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TomTom

"In May 2011, the company announced that it was planning to sell aggregated customer information to the Australian Roads and Traffic Authority, which could also potentially be used for targeted speed enforcement.[59]

The privacy implications of this announcement were widely reported, particularly the lack of anonymity and the potential to associate the data with individuals. The company's practice of selling its user data has been criticised by Electronic Frontiers Australia. David Vaile of the University of New South Wales' Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre has called for an independent technical analysis of the company's data collection practices. TomTom navigation devices collect user data that includes point of origin, point of destination, journey times, speeds and routes taken. The Australian Privacy Foundation said it would be easy to trace the data back to individual customers, even if TomTom claimed it used only aggregated, anonymous data.[59][60]

TomTom VP of Marketing Chris Kearney insisted the information was totally anonymous. In addition to this, he said TomTom never sold the information to Dutch authorities with speed cameras in mind, although Kearney would not rule out selling the user data for similar use in Australia.[60]

Such data is being purchased from various mapping companies by governments on a fairly regular basis.[61] It is not known if governments use this data for purposes other than the placement of speed cameras, such as to improve the road network, introduce traffic lights or find accident hotspots."

SICK of being spied on, they'll be putting RFID's on condoms next.

    • So Apple and Google don't spy on you? If I turned GPS on my phone in the morning, my phone gives me an estimate on when I can expect to be at work taking public transport. If you use the mobile version of navigation app or some sort, it is even easier for them to collect data. There is far more juicy data about you from your phone than a GPS unit.

If you are so scared, do a full reset before you connect the GPS unit to your PC before you do software updates. TomTom put a secret SIM and paying for mobile data for each GPS unit, I highly doubt that.

Relax, unless you are doing something dodgy, the info they collect from you is mainly for stats. However, if you are VIP or you believe you will become someone important one day, then sure, it is a different matter (but then you will probably have your own driver).

      • +1

My point was- didn't expect companies like this to be selling our data too. Expect it when apps are free you are the product and all that, but not when you've forked out $400 bucks plus maybe update charges for a high-end GPS.

        • I agree.

There is a difference between selling data for advertising purposes vrs the Government, who is using the data to put in more speed cameras.

    • There was an option when I set up my unit where you could opt in or out of sharing data with Tom Tom for "map improvements and user reported map fixes". I read their data sharing policy and opted out as their policy included sharing with 3rd parties.

      • Thanks for clarifying their policy mate, and great they give you the choice to opt out, too many have "accept all T&C's or no uso"

It has just become a bargain again, no stock around me though; anyone up for posting a 5" if their local OW has any (GPS that is)?

  • +1

run out of 42 and 52 models, I ended up getting a start 62 for $45 at Glen Waverley OfficeWork.

    • +4

      Even better bargain.

Driving the 1500km to the store now, hope I don't get lost (no satnav yet).

  • I have a TomTom 52 and it's pretty slow when loading up, searching locations and navigating the options (all around honestly), but for that price it's okay.

  • None in stock in Ferntree Gully or Bayswater (checked 42/52/62).

  • +1

Is this deal in Sydney as well?

    • If you can find stock, yes.

  • Can't find any stock in my area. Anyone got good luck?
