Or the 4bay Qnap for less

    • Less for a reason; the QNAP OS can't hold a candle to Synology's DiskStation Manager.

  • Makes no sense to buy this when you can get equally good (if not better) QNAP products with more bays for less.

Maybe for you, but not everyone. Synology arguably has a better UI and ease of use which many prefer.

      • And better security and quick patches with synology!

      • I benchmarked the two in a store (in Singapore) when I was looking at these and found the Synology UI much better for me. Now that I'm used to the apps/etc I plan to stick to Synology when my DS216j conks out.

    • Does QNAP offer free data recover service?

      • Does Synology?

        • +1

Yes. Once they did data recover from totally crashed volume for one of our customers who played too much with Storage Manager settings. I also remember free data recovery service mentioned at Synology presentation last Thursday in Sydney.

          Now..Does QNAP?

        • +1

I had a volume crash earlier this week. Could still copy data off my drive, so I made sure it was fully backed up just in case & contacted Synology.
A few hours later and they’d repaired it remotely. I lost no data and it’s all working great again.

Haven’t used QNAP, but Synology’s software is great.

Not the same target segment. It’s like why do I pay for an MX5 with 2 seats when I can get a Hyundai i30 that has 4 seats for less ;-) Note that the 218+ use Celeron CPU and capable of 4K multimedia along with a few more advanced features. The QNap you mentioned should be compared to the synology DS416 4-bay which is equivalent in price.

  • I see in the specs it supports AES-NI encryption… is this thing actually fast at using encrypted shares (both read/write)?

On a related note, did Synology ever overcome the limitation of 143 characters in filenames for encrypted shares? I think it includes path which creates a bit of an issue when I want to backup my documents folders which have lots of little subfolders and beyond.

  • Does anyone have experience with Synology's Surveillance Station, and would this be a good option paired with a couple of decent size drives and some IP cameras (hikvision?) for a decent small business surveillance setup?

    • +3

Should work for your purposes. I tried Surveillance Station on my ds216j with D-Link IP cameras and once set up, it worked well both through the web browser and the iPhone app. The software had the feeling of (what I'd imagine) old school surveillance desks used by security personnel in a shopping mall or something would use. That being said, the licences aren't cheap for additional cameras (but you can buy them on sale on eBay) and they're tied to your specific NAS (i.e. you can't change to a new Synology NAS and bring them over). Only real downside I found was my DS216j was a bit underpowered already so things weren't exactly 'snappy' when using the UI.

      • they're tied to your specific NAS (i.e. you can't change to a new Synology NAS and bring them over).

Being a noobie to this, it always struck me as a little weird.

        • Technically it’s the same licence as OEM Windows keys but Synology enforces it.

IMO it’s stupid though other than annoying owners but I guess it’s a way to keep the revenue flowing as owners upgrade their NAS and I prefer this to being forced into a subscription model.
