Google Pixel 4 $549 / 4XL $779 with Telstra 60GB $65pm Plan (Min Cost $1329 / $1559) Port-in/New Customers + $150 GC @ JB Hi-Fi

691

Hey guys,

Current JB Hi-Fi gift card offer (valid till 23/10 but sure to pop up again) gives you $500 off any phone when signing up to the associated Telstra plan. So brings down the Pixel 4 / 4XL by quite a bit.

To make the math easier (includes price of the plan):
Over 12 months - Pixel 4 $110.75 (total $1329) / Pixel 4XL $129.92 (total $1559)
Over 24 months - Pixel 4 $87.88 (total $2109) / Pixel 4XL $97.46 (total $2339)

If you use this with the pre-order deal on the Pixel 4 / 4XL you get a JB Hi-Fi voucher for $150 which is even more of a bargain. (Get in quick for this one!)

edit: lol, everyone who is negging about better deals, there are definitely better deals out there (outright+cheaper plan) or even better ones coming (like this one coming Thursday!)

when I posted this it seemed like a good deal, just trying to do a good favour here :)

        • If you're recontracting then that's not surprising. But if you're a new customer, that would be surprising as you wouldn't have any bargaining power. Those 7-8 people, were they new Optus customers?

          • @eug: true…. only 1 was a new customer was tossing up between the Telstra deals or Optus

        • What is the Optus Retention team number ?

  • I'm currently with Boost- Would it be possible to port out to vodafone/optus and then go for this deal (port back to Telstra) Before the 23rd?
I seem to recall telcos not approving more than one port per 24 hours or something like that..

    • YMMV
A Boost -> Voda port will be pretty quick. The issue is the Voda -> Telstra port, whether or not they enforce the 30(?) day period required away from Telstra before it's a new customer port in…

  • A good deal if you really want all that data, otherwise buying the handset outright with the $150 gift card and getting a cheaper plan also works out the same. IMO $65 for a phone plan without a phone, international calls or any other benifit is too expensive.

    E.G : Telechoice (on Telstra network) offers 17GB of data with unlimited national calls for $25 pm on a 12 month contract = $300 + 4XL 128GB $1429 - $150 GC = $1579 (min cost).

    • +1

I too think that a $65/m plan is too expensive and I personally wouldn't use the data either, but the Telstra offer is still fractionally cheaper…so of the two why on earth wouldn't one take the Telstra offer? You don't have to use the extra data and it's there if you need it. Can always move to Telechoices after 12 months is up…

      Telechoices: (25x12)+1429-150=$1579
      Telstra: (65x12)+1429-150-500=$1559

      • True, the Telstra offer is still cheaper and offers more data, therefore definitely worth getting over the Telechoice plan for anyone who is in the market for a new phone and a plan. I was merely pointing out that unless you really want 60GB of data, this so called "deal" is nothing out of the ordinary, you are not going to miss out on anything by not signing up.

But this on the otherhand is a deal worth getting exited about!

        • unless you really want 60GB of data, this so called "deal" is nothing out of the ordinary

Isn't the "free" 43GB of data on Telstra … out of the ordinary?

          • @eug:

Isn't the "free" 43GB of data on Telstra … out of the ordinary?

I don’t see any use for that extra 43Gigs, because it is too little to replace my home broadband connection and too much to use when I’m out and about (I use WiFi at home and office, so my mobile data use is generally less than 10GB). Unless I get at least 250GB with data sharing (which I can then use to replace my home connection) it doesn't really matter.

            • @opt:

I don’t see any use for that extra 43Gigs

Sure, but getting 43GB free is still out of the ordinary and worth a post, as there are plenty of people who don't find 17GB enough.

So to you, it's not a deal. But to other people, looking at the number of upvotes, clearly it's a deal. :)

              • @eug:

I am not saying its not worth a post. This is probably the best Pixel deal out there right now (at least till Thursday) therefore deserves to be here. I’m also not denying some people may find this a good bargain if they are after a large data allowance. Which is why I started my first post with:

A good deal if you really want all that data

However, indicating that you can get a Pixel 4 XL for $779 as per the title is somewhat misleading. Because I’m currently eyeing the Pixel 4 myself and got excited when I read the title. But after doing some math I soon realised it is not worth taking. Because I can get same call inclusions and more than enough data on the Telstra network already for the same price. So I thought posting my findings could help someone else like me (who is after the phone but don’t need a boat load of data) from getting worked up for nothing. :)

                • @opt:

I am not saying its not worth a post.

Right, the way you said "deal" in inverted commas made it sound like you didn't consider it a deal worth posting.

So I thought posting my findings could help someone else like me (who is after the phone but don’t need a boat load of data) from getting worked up for nothing. :)

OK, that does makes sense. :)

  • I'm already on the JB Telstra deal ($45 / month) from November last year.

    1. Can I port away and port back before that deal runs out or do I have to wait until the full 12 months is up?
    2. Who is the best alternative provider to port to in terms of least cost and least amount of time?

After reading the review on Pixel 4, I'm not sure anyone would be too exicted to jump onboard. So underwhelming in spec and feature for a premium phone!

So underwhelming in spec and feature for a premium phone!

I think the Verge's review sums it up very well.

"The Pixel 4 is the best example yet of why specs don't tell you the whole story about whether or not an Android phone is actually any good… because the Pixel 4 is really good."

      • nah, that ugly square camera "box" with no wide angle len is enough to put me off ..

        • +1

Hmm? You were talking about specs and features. I was saying you can't judge a phone purely by specs, because software is more important - a phone with a fast processor but poor software will be a poor phone.

Now you're talking about the design. If you don't like a design that's fine, but it has nothing to do with people not jumping on board because the specs are underwhelming.

          • @eug: 6gb ram is underwhelming in the premium market I would say, since even S10e got 8gb…software or not, the whole hand gesture thing is stupid & inconsistent, and I certainly don't want just use face only to unlock (pain in the arse at night I bet). still shit battery for 2019, No expandable storage etc.. Google just never listen to the market..

Tell me one thing current Android phone can't do what Pixel 4 can. Even hand gesture happened with LG phone a while back.

            • @Lancerx:

6gb ram is underwhelming in the premium market I would say, since even S10e got 8gb

Yeah, I do wish it came with 8GB as well. But as the verge says, a bunch of specs isn't everything. After all, the iPhone 11 Pro does just fine with 4GB RAM.

the whole hand gesture thing is stupid

It does seem gimmicky, but at least they're trying to put in interesting new features. Hopefully they can develop the software further to do the things shown in the original Soli demos.

I certainly don't want just face only to unlock (pain in the arse at night I bet)

It uses an IR camera so it has no problem at all at night. All the reviews I've seen say it works well, so it's probably fine.

            • @Lancerx: The Galaxy needs the additional RAM to handle all the crap it has preloaded into the launcher/OS and their included unnecessary 'features', the Pixel does not.

A huge fan of pixels can't even recommend the Pixel 4.

        • Just goes to show that different people have different requirements when it comes to phones. Or anything, really.

          • @eug: And then there are the poor specs, and poor software :-(

            The Verge
            "Disappointing battery life
Video quality and features don’t match the stills
            No ultrawide camera"

Also given that the pixel is smoother than some other androids because of the 90hz screen, which is also a spec right?

            • +1

              @onlinepred:

And then there are the poor specs

Did you miss the closing statement on the Verge's review? There's more to a phone than just specs.

              The Verge
              "Disappointing battery life
Video quality and features don’t match the stills
              No ultrawide camera"

              The Verge
              - (fast) face unlock
              - smooth display
              - excellent still camera

As I said, different people have different requirements. Someone who sits at an office all day might not care too much about the battery life as the phone can be charging the whole day. Not everyone shoots video on their phone, or at all. Ultrawide cameras are definitely nice to have, but not necessary for everyone.

That's why Android is fantastic - there's likely a phone for everyone. It'd be silly to recommend any phone to anyone without knowing their use cases first. If someone asked you to recommend a car, would you immediately recommend whatever car you like without first asking them how they're going to use it?

before buying, check the reviews for the phone. here's the one by MKBHD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfbSqTB74xM

  • In my opinion, this phone shouldn't be considered. But that's just my opinion.

Xiaomi for the budget, OnePlus for the better, Samsung for the best. Great android stuff coming out of these manufacturers.

I fell in love with no anxiety batteries with Xiaomi, and it really is so nice. You all deserve that.

If you want to save the most money in the long run and you have self control to not need to buy a new phone for the sake of it, then an iPhone could end up being the cheaper option. They're already about 2 years ahead speed wise, and you can count on updates for at least 4 years, so as long as you aren't going to go buy another iphone in a couple years it can work out cheaper. But they also make great gifts to parents if you keep them in nice condition and want to upgrade. I gifted my pristine 6s+ to my mum and that's christmas and bday sorted.

Just saying, cuz, for a while I was stuck on this "just buy a budget android" every 1-2 years, and in the end it was costing me more.

  • lesson learned. Never buy a small Pixel phone.
