Can the common hardware be upgraded like ram?

    • Yes

  • +24

I don't think it's a good price for the spec. Double memory and bigger processor was selling for 144.20 extra 9 months ago. The 8% cashback of $72.02 might sweeten the deal a bit more though but upgrading it to a higher spec would basically eat up the saving.

      100% agree.

      • +4

Don't you have to find it cheaper elsewhere if you want to neg vote?

        • -5

          Outdated

          • @Bellpop: It is functionality for cost or value for the customer we judge here, not manufacture dates.

    • +4

IMO every 144.20 bux will add some extra values but this is not a bad deal for the people who are stick to a budget and looking for a gaming laptop under $1k.

      • +2

Won't be good for gaming if underpowered.

        • Im using a asus 505dd. Similar specs, smaller ssd. Paid $840 and it does the job for me very well.

          • +3

@Seedy seed: Depends on the games you play. I could say my Note 10+ does fairly well for gaming too…. Doesn't mean it will run the recent AAA titles at 60fps.

          • +1

@Seedy seed: I own this exact same laptop but with higher configuration, 8750H 16GB 1TB+128GB GTX 1050. It's excellent for light gaming, mid-intensity productivity applications, etc. Can easily support a couple of virtual machines. I have no complaints execept that it's keyboard and surrounding area is a smudge magnet. Everything depends on the type of applications you plan to use.

The storage setup was different though. Which one is better comes down to use case.

    • It's not the very worst deal for the price, but in this day and age it's a struggle to really call a 1050 a 'gaming' card. Any modern game is going to really struggle. It will still run, but yeah. At this price point I'd expect a 1060 at least.

  • +7

Gtx 1050 is so outdated though

    • +3

Should it be a 1650 or 60 at least?

      • +10

        1650 minimum
        1060 max q ideal
        1660 living it up
        2060 dreaming

        • What about 1050 Ti? I see there are a few 1050 ti laptops but they're more around the $1100 range (with 9300 CPU)
And those GPUs you listed…. are you going to find them in the low $1k range?

          • +2

@Blitzfx: Gtx1650 gaming laptops are around $1100 when on sale. Hopefully less come Black Friday.

            P.s. I’ve seen a dell G5 with gtx1060 go on sale for $1k.

            • @MuddyClear: Yeh this seema kinda overrated for the money tbh

            • @MuddyClear: That G5 with 1060 was a clearance deal. We won't be seeing that again soon

              • @FireRunner: Even when it does come around most of us will miss out as it will be out of stock within 1-2hrs!

  • +2

Any plans on something slightly higher specced?
Was just about to buy a dell after considering the y540 and similar gaming laptops, but a better deal on a Lenovo gaming laptop would probably pull me back to Lenovo.

  • +1

    Yeah…
    Need the 9750H variant.
    Don't care about GFX…

    • I’m looking at the same model as you, I’ve got it configured for $2060, wbu?

  • +1

Does anybody know if the website and Dell are eligible for Price Protection?
    Because technically it's not .com.au - it's .com/au ?

  • Is the gpu max-q variant

When shopping for a gaming laptop, thermal performance is very important

Keeping my eye out for a bargain RTX gaming laptop

Anyone know when the X1 Extreme will get 10th gen CPU and a 20xx gpu?

  • +2

Cmon TA, any deals for the X series like X395 and X390?

  • I have the I7 version and it's great. This would need to be upgraded a little.

  • +1

Yeah, 1050's a bit old, but it's still probs great for Medium-High 1080P games.

  • I wouldn't game on a 1050. Pay a bit more.

  • +3

Looking forward to the next Thinkpad deal.

  • 250nit kills it. I don't recommend buying a screen with less than 300nit brightness.

otherwise I love the build and feel of Y530

    • -1

Is 50 nit difference that big?

      • your child will be sent home if they find that many nits on her.

        • my gf had nits in primary school yes they did send her home sadly

  • +1

ARSE-LEGION would have been a better code - missed opportunity :(

    • NVIDEA Better

      • NOIDEA

  • Processor perfectly fine for gaming. Near 10000 passmark. You don't need 6 cores.

The graphics card….okay but not good enough for this price. Not enough to convince me to upgrade from my Ryzen laptop.

Probably a good idea to post up the decibel rating for this gaming laptop as well in case Shung wants to buy this.

holly crap this laptop , i5, 8gb ram, 1050 and nice and suitable for minecraft and similar

  • +3

Doesn't seem to have spectacular specs. [Dell G3 for $919.20] has GTX 1050 Ti, Same CPU, a smaller SSD but includes a 1TB HDD. Similar price and don't need to wait for cashback.

  • Looking at this more for photo/video editing and general use. Seems like a reasonable alternative to ultrabook style laptops. Price seems pretty good compared to Dell XPS and Surface Laptop.
With cashback and TRS looking around $830 for this.
