30-50% Crumpler Bags (Hawthorn, Victoria)

290

The Crumpler Clearance store has 30-50% off most of their stock at the moment.

50% off:
I grabbed the 7 million dollar bag in red for half price ($95).
I also saw messenger bags in a small number of colours and some laptop bags.

30% off:

Basically, everything else that I could see, although there may be some corner of the store I didn't check out. The other million dollar bags were 30% off. Since this is the clearance store, they mightn't have everything, although it seemed like most of their range was there.

They're on Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn (not far from the station).

Expiry date is a guestimate, but I didn't think to ask for sure at the time (too busy hugging my bag and whispering sweet nothings).

  • Wow that's a huge discount considering these rarely go on sale.

I would go if I didn't have two already!

I had difficulty leaving the store without buying an additional laptop bag and a general messenger bag.

      • You should have. These bags are awesome - I'm actually considering getting another now lol.

  • Ouch! I will visit tomorrow then!!

  • I think I'll stick to CHROME bags for those prices.

Yeah, prices listed on their website strike me as somewhat expensive for pretty basic Made in China nylon bags, although I suppose 30-50% off is somewhat more palatable. Prices seem to have gone up A LOT since I last checked out this brand a few years ago.

At those prices, I'd rather buy Porter (Made in Japan), Mismo (Made in Denmark), Filson (Made in USA) and countless other choices, many of which have been on sale in the US and Europe for 50-70% off in recent weeks.

For what it's worth, I've had mine for 3.5 years and there is not a single tear, loose thread, or hint of dirt. I've taken it camping, overseas, and use it almost daily as my Uni bag.

And even if something happens, they have a lifetime warranty where they will fix it locally.

      • Wow these crumplers are expensive!! I've been wanting something similar though, will definitely check out those brands you named ;)

      • Any good online sites for US/Europe for these bags that you would recommend?

        • There are dozens of online shops out there which sell those brands, so it'd take too much time than I have at the moment to compile them all here for you. If you've got a specific bag you're interested in, I might be able to find a good deal for you, though. Unfortunately, the summer sales are all but over in the US/Europe now, so bargains are much harder to find than a few weeks ago.

They are expensive, but I would definitely not call them a basic nylon bag. Firstly they're designed very well. The laptop backpack I bough years ago had a bunch of features that I'd never seen on another bag.. was extremely comfortable and probly the most thief-proof bag I'd owned.

and they use top quality materials.. very heavy nylon, very thick zips and very sturdy padding. I've had one for 5 + years and it's almost good as new. In terms of price they've always been expensive.. 200+ for some models. Though I did just notice they now have some that are close to 500.. don't think i'd spend that much.. though maybe if i had a top of the line laptop or thousands of dollars of photo gear I might consider it.

Oh, I don't doubt that they are probably pretty well made compared to some cheaper bags out there. (I can't remember being particularly impressed by the quality of Crumpler last time I checked the brand out in person, though, and I certainly wouldn't regard them in same league as some of the manufacturers I've mentioned. Filson bags are designed to last decades, for instance.)

My main beef is that their price points put them in line with some of the most well-regarded and highest quality brands in the business, and at those price points I start to expect more for my money. It also doesn't help in my perception of value when Crumper has moved their production to China unlike many of their high-end competitors.

To give one example: Crumpler want $335 shipped in Australia for this 58L trolley: http://www.crumpler.com/AU/Travel-Bags/Wheeled-Luggage/Dry-R…

For less — for roughly $300 all up — I can get a German-made Rimowa 63L hard shell trolley (which weighs slightly less to boot) shipped all the way from Germany: http://www.koffer24.de/shop/de/en/product/trolley-by-rimowa-…

The same Rimowa Salsa trolley typically retails for about $700-800 in Australia. Do any search of reviews or travel forums and you'll see that Rimowa is probably one of the most (if not the most) well-regarded luggage makers around, and their products are hailed by many frequent travellers as nearly indestructible. Why buy a Toyota when you could get an equivalent BMW for less, basically? :)

That's just one example, and I could give plenty of others in other product categories where I think there's better value out there.

Anyway, I don't want to criticise the OP; 30-50% off Crumpler does strike me as reasonable value — I was just somewhat surprised at their standard retail prices.

  • I've had my crumpler messenger bag for 15 years and still going strong, and it's been through alot! They also offer lifetime replacement on clips and things, might be worth asking if this is still the case.

    • They do indeed, they take your name and address and register your lifetime warranty.
