I was bummed that I missed out on the $240 deal Boost was running for this kit recently, so this is great!

    • +2

I was bummed that I missed out on the $200 deal Telstra was running for their 200GB kit earlier.

So I pretty much decided on this kit instead. I was patient, kept seeing it Sold Out for $300, then on special for $280, then for $270, then $250, then $240 and now $235. But not patient enough it seems, as the price kept dropping since I bought it. Realistically, the current contract plans aren't good value, and 5G Network isn't ready (and prolly won't be until 2022). The price premium of 5G may be worth it, if it also replaces your Home NBN-100 connection. Until then, LTE-4GX on discount connections like this seems to be the best approach.

      • I missed out on the Telstra deal too, still $250 now https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/495551

So, how much did you end up paying for this Boost $300 kit?

        • +1

          x1 $270 (for me), then x2 $240 (for siblings).
My 2-year contract (thanks OzBargain) ends in a week.

          • @Kangal: Haha, sounds like one of my experiences. Bought a $300 tent at Aldi reduced to $200, then a month later saw same tent reduced down to $99 and grabbed it for my friend. Was hoping they said to split halfway and go for $150 each but not a word, so they got a great bargain for $99 lol.

            • @ozhunter68: Yeah, I predicted it would happen. However, the deals kept coming and getting sold out within 30mins. Even just regular $300 kits ran out from Boost. So there was some Fomo, I should hand back my OzBargain License.

              • +1

@Kangal: But wait,….your OzBargain License is working well for others ( siblings ).

          • +2

@Kangal: I predict a number of Telstra F&F deals ending this month…. Mine included.

            • @tromboc: What are "Telstra F&F deals"?

              • +1

@ozhunter68: It's Contract-Deals that were aimed at Telstra staff.
                https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/342769

                For instance, I got 20GB/month for $59/month.
There was the option of a Google Pixel 2XL (64GB). Some paid $10/month more and got a $300 JB-Hifi credit. I got a Samsung S8, but instead kept using my $460 LG G6 that I bought 6 months earlier. I bought a good case and screen protector for the S8, and sold them together, all Brand New for $900. Basically, I ended up paying $25/month for Unlimited Telstra 4GX and enough Data for me (still have a NBN-100 at home though). So it was worth it.

                • @Kangal: Cheers. Friends & Family deals. Yeah, I remember those offers and actually was pretty tempted by it myself ( had to use up heaps of cheap sim starter packs before expiry, and still do haha ).

Did you try out the S8 before deciding on keeping it or the LG G6? Both good phones.

I am still currently rocking a HTC 10 and although I have bought newer phones I somehow still prefer using that for my every day phone.

                  • +1

@ozhunter68: I didn't try it out. The S8 was definitely better (screen, camera, battery life). Though I preferred the Ultrawide camera, the Flat screen/durability of the LG, and the software of the LG is better than Samsung's. I got the same deal for my brother, and he ended up using the S8, and he sold his old S7 for $300.

The HTC 10 is really old/behind now and definitely not the companies best. If you're looking to upgrade, let me know your budget and I'll recommend you something modern

                    • @Kangal: For me the HTC 10 works well for my needs, mainly for a phone to carry around for calls and txt, with occasional gps and google use. I use my phone's camera, but not for best photos as I use camera for those ocasions, and I'm not a gamer. I usually carry a second phone with a sim with lot's of cheap data mainly for internet and YouTube purposes, was using a solid Redmi Note 4 and now a Mi A2 which work great for Kogan/Vodafone finding this way I conserve power on one phone and can just charge both at home.

I keep my newest phone at home for 6 months to a year using it to test and entertainment mainly via wifi before I either use it as main or sell it. Personally I prefer phones that were released a year ago as they are much cheaper, but recently changed that buying a Nokia 6.1 and Mi A2 last year and just now a cheap $149 Vodafone Samsung A20 to play with. Will look out for an older flagship to replace my as new HTC 10, was tempted by the LG V30 for $399 as I had a LG G2 that I liked years ago before the need for B28, so some suggestions will be welcome there.

I spend more money on laptops than phones, hence $350 for me is my limit for something like a Xiaomi Mi 9T ( 6GB/128GB ) or a One + 6/T, could push that up to $400 max for maybe a Samsung Galaxy S9+ or Note 9 refurb haha.

@ozhunter68: Hmmm, you do have a niche use with separate SIM cards. There are some DualSIM options, but honestly nothing groundbreaking. The tricky part is you would benefit greatly by having a Removable Battery, however they have been discontinued. Using a Car Engine starter as a backup Battery/Power Bank is my solution but this might not be ideal for you. So if we're limited to using two phones: wouldn't it be better to have a lower end phone for calls and txt, and have a higher end phone for GPS, Internet, Video playback?

                        Example of Low-end:
                        ~$200, Post-2016, Locked Skinned Android 5.1, 720p (16:9) 5.0inch IPS-LCD, 2500mAh, 32GB storage, 2GB RAM, and chipsets such as: QSD 439, 450, 625, 626, 630.

                        Example of Midrange:
                        ~$400, Post-2017, Locked Skinned Android 7.0, 1080p (18:9) 5.5inch IPS-LCD, 3000mAh, 64GB storage, 4GB RAM, and chipsets such as: QSD 632, 636, 665, 670, 660.

                        Example of High-end:
                        ~$600, Post-2018, Locked Stockish Android 8.0, 1080p (19:9) 6inch AMOLED, 3500mAh, 128GB storage, 6GB RAM, and chipsets such as: QSD 675, 710, 712, 730.

                        Example of Luxury:

@Kangal: Thanks for you detailed well thought out break down here. You are right that I have a niche use with separate sim cards and after first getting really excited about getting and then using a dual sim phone ( Redmi Note 4 but that does not have B28, so not so handy for me, then a Moto G5+ with B28 ), found I did not like using it that way and too fiddly and cumbersome switching between sims quickly with battery running down fast. I use power banks often, but still prefer and find it much more convenient to use the phone/phones themselves with one sim and supplement with modem or second phone.

I also use my prepaid sims in portable wifi modems, and happy to leave that plugged into power often when using at home.

Myself, like many other smartphone users started of with a low to midrange model, was pretty content rocking a Huawei Y550 and later a HTC incredible S, Huawei Y6 Elite, LG Nexus 4 , LG G2 and Xiaomi Redmi N4, Sony Xperia XA, Moto G5+, HTC 10, Nokia 6.1, Xiaomi Mi A2, and last week a Samsung A20. Oh, I nearly forgot I also bought a Nokia/Microsoft Lumia 640 just to try out Windows Mobile years ago too lol.

I am the go to tech guy for some of my family and friends, so I search and test out phones for them and myself, hence I purchase quiet a few.

  • So do you need to use the coupon?

    • NEWSAVE is the coupon but its added automatically at checkout..

      • Okay cheers.

  • thanks, this is a great deal!

  • How are download speeds on 4g? Same as Telstra? I'm on Catch Connect and their speeds seem to be quite slow, some of the time.

    • -1

Don't think Catch is Telstra network

    • +1

I am currently getting 70-90 mbps on Catch.

      • I got 0.3 yesterday, then turned it on airplane mode and then got 5.
Just tested it now and got 21 Mbps.

    • +1

Boost is full Telstra 4GX. Catch is Optus.

    • 200mbps+ on Boost..

      • +2

Apologise for that. sms me and I'll ask if we can manual change your order as one off exception.

    • Argh was checking out just as it stopped working..

    • How much loss?

  • NEWSAVE came up as $2 discount now.

    • it is still a saving, isn't it?

  • -4

Alternatively you could buy 6 $4.90 kogan Sims and save $200.

    • +1

So you have to buy a Kogan sim, then port to another provider and then back to Kogan?

    • +5

And be on Vodafone's horrible network.

    • Yeah, because that’s comparable.

  • +5

Even at full price, put another way, that's an average of 20GB per month for $25 on Telstra 4G with a 12 month commitment.

No need for rollover / recharging (e.g. if you go overseas for a month) + reduced possibility of bill shock (you won't end up with a huge bill but you might burn through it quicker than expected!).

    Seems decent!

    • Yes, but for some 20GB per month is overkill.
The $150 SIM plan is 1/2 of the price, for 1/3 of the data on offer.

  • can someone please confirm if the 13xxxx and 1800xxxxxxxx numbers are included in the standard calls?
