Asus 1015B Netbook with AMD C-50 $238 at HN

520

I saw this on WP and I thought it seems pretty cheap. According to the poster, the cheapest one on Aussie sites were $300+. Cheapest of this model on staticice I could find was also $300+, but they were the Atom ones, and off the top of my head, I think this AMD is supposed to be better or something.

Here's the description from the HN site:

Designed to Keep You On The Move
Despite being compact in size, the Asus 1015B netbook packs serious punch with an AMD C50 Dual Core 1.0GHz processor paired with AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics as well as 1GB RAM to let you do more on the go, wherever you happen to go.

LED Backlit Display
Equipped with backlit LED display technology, the Asus 1015B netbook supports 1024 x 600 resolution to ensure user comfort even after prolonged use.

Processor Speed (GHz): 1.00
Installed RAM (GB): 1
Hard Drive Size: 250GB
Screen Size: 10.1"

Thinking of buying a netbook and wanted some opinions, but it also seems like a good deal, so posted here instead of forums.

Yeah, and the usual first post etc.

Seems like a good price, especially if you buy something cheap (like a case) to get the price over $250 and then use your amex cashback to bring the price down to $200.

  • What kind of battery comes with this deal and how long can it last?

    • 8hr+

      • are you sure or just guessing?

  • Think I'll pass. http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/asus-eee-pc-1015b.as…

Better cpu would make it pretty good, though.

    • +1

If I'm not mistaken, is that review talking about the C-30 single core processor?

I think the C-50 is meant to be faster.

    • +9

And only 100% more expensive than the original bargain!

      • +7

I know right, but wait, invest just that tad bit more and you can get something completely different!! never ending cycle, people always find ways to compare apples with elephants

    • +1

what else do you do on the move beside surfing web?
I think in term of performance, it beats the tablet processor though

    • -5

When you have used the C-50 and the E350 you'll realize how sluggish the C-50 is, the extra 200+ for the E350 is WELL worth the money, you'll need to do a BIT MORE research, the C-50 in this ASUS especially sucks, along with the CRAPPY Res…!

      • +3

Lower battery life and bigger form factor. Misses the point of a netbook. Pass.

      • +1

Considering netbooks aren't meant to be speed demons, they're more about cost and convenience, you're missing the point…

  • specs look alright, it can play 1080p and even has USB 3.0 port. But if its got a 3 cell battery, then it will only last 3 hours (or less), which i feel defeats the purpose of a netbook.

    http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_PC/Eee_PC_1015B/#specifications

    • need to check in stores

    • usb 3 is good and so is hdmi

but read the reviews… apparently crappy 720p off a webpage struggles

      • had a look at a few video reviews and the performance is consistent between them. 720 and 1080p on youtube seems fine (but maybe not other sites. I have no idea why). 720p mkv files play well, as do 1080p mkv files (but you have to enable DXVA).

Then again, if this is a 3 cell battery… it would be pointless as you wouldnt get through a full movie.

        • Venu, do you own one?
I just need to double check if I play 1080p or 720p mkv whether it is slow?
because I tested yesterday at office works (different model with n570 intel cpu) and connect my external hdd and play mkv movie via usb 2.0 and the movie shows in slow motion.

I am not sure whether it is because I was connecting to the external hdd drive though.

Anyway, if you own one and then copy the movie to the hdd of the netbook, can you watch or play normally?

          Please let me konw.

edit: by the way, am I correct saying that intel n570 or 550 should be faster than this C50?

        • In response to Surat, you need to be running a DXVA enabled player in order to playback 1080p.

In the simplest case, this means using media player classic home cinema and installing that on your test machine in officeworks.

Other programs that use dxva are XBMC and also new versions of flash.

        • i now have both n570 and c-50 and i can say after playing around both that the n570 is a little faster with everyday handling of applications and multi-tasking but obviously loses out on media. n570 has no hope of playing 1080p while it's easily handled in the c-50

    • bought one today. No usb 3.0
However others like, hdmi, bt3.0 do exist
      Battery is 6 cell

  • +2

This looks like just the thing to get me through my next hospital stay - plus it'll be new and clean and not full of rubbish in the keys like my current laptop :)

    • Replace your keyboard or take it out for a clean. It usually has just one connection to the mobo.

      • +1

LOL. good luck cleaning it once y pill keys of the laptop keyboard, youve probably broken the hook xD

  • This should be fine for video editing, right? Because of the dedicated graphics?

    • Nope, the 6250 is integrated.

  • Why such a low (1.0 GHz) cpu clock speed?

    • +3

      Coz its cheap as chips…

  • +1

Just called HN. 6 cell battery.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-C-50-Notebook-Processor.409…
    http://www.netbooknews.com/19203/amd-ontario-c-50-vs-intel-a…

64 bit, virtualisation capable. not as fast as the n550 cpu wise but the llama gets its butt spanked gfx wise.

I reserved one at a nearby HN.

    • Ok. I take that back. It's a 6 cell 4400mAH battery not the higher capacity 5200. This would mean it'll have a hard time cracking my minimum requirement of 6hrs battery life. Unreserved and, imo, no longer a deal. :/ Poo.

      • i just got one from bella vista HN and it's 5200mah

        • Ok. That's interesting. The guy on the phone sounded like he was reading it off the spec sheet or battery as he was providing voltage, etc. Wonder if they have a mix and he copped the bad one or, alternatively, he grabbed the wrong model.

        • yeah they didn't seem to know much about them.. didn't know it was 3 or 6 cells so i had to check myself. and got the colours a bit mixed up too. definitely 5200 though, good deal next to my 189 AOD257 :)

  • The C-50 is an amazing CPU, given the low price, u just can't go wrong.

  • Is this compaq better?

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/laptops/com…

More expensive but my aim is to use it during my holiday and after.
Not sure the weight much different.

which one is worth to buy?

Also, I would like to watch movie as well without any slowness or issue? which one is better compaq or this asus?

thanks and waiting for your advice.

    • Better for what purpose? Entry level laptops such as that Compaq usually has a 2hr battery life and definitely chunkier than a netbook. It's faster but the processor is still a netbook type processor. If that lappy had a decent battery life I would definitely buy it.

    • I daresay watching movies on a laptop should be better.

      • For watching movie which one is better?
NO gaming, just general internet browsing, words, excel.

Hm..I have no idea about the battery life hence I will go there and check it myself later.

        Thanks.

        • If you are thinking of doing more than an hour of work doing excel and typing on a netbook, you might want to check if you are comfortable with that. I know many people are not.

      • Not when you are away from a wall socket on a 2hr battery life notebook.

        • I couldn't find anywhere regarding the battery of this laptop.
@Pao2x do you own one or how do you know if the battery only last for 2-3hrs?

          Please let me know.

edit: found it. Features Battery Type: 6-cell Lithium Ion
so do you do think still last for 2 hrs?

        • I have experience with 3 entry level laptops and none of them lasts more than 2 1/2 hours with regular use. I am assuming it would be in the same ball park

        • this isn't an entry level laptop, its a netbook. Different category.

        • How long is the battery life then? It probably has a cheap battery and 14" screen. I say it's safe to assume this will go nowhere near 4 hrs of normal use w/ wifi.

    • Actually I bought one for my friend at $327. Too heavy and thick. Couldn't understand why HP made such case for AMD APU

  • Whats the operating system? I couldnt see it on HN? Cheers

    • Win 7 Starter I presume

  • I called up - HN say windows 7

    • -1

      It is Windows 7 Starter.
Because it is "Starter" Edition, the maximum it can take is 1GB.
If you want to upgrade its RAM, you need to
      1. buy a single 2GB/4GB RAM (to replace the 1GB RAM)
      and
      2. install any other OS that can support 2GB/4GB

      But 1GB has its merit.
The hibernation/wake up process time is shorter, compared to a system with larger RAMs.
      Just my 2c.

      • The maximum is actually 2GB (see here). Which is fine for a netbook like this.

        • Hey tantryl, do you know where I can get a 2gb replacement?

  • oh wow about time the amd brazos came over to aussie.

the only one that impressed me the most is e350 aka Zacate chip.

and as usual, asus 1215B always no offer and in high demand pffft

  • +1

Just bought one from the HN at QV in Melbourne. :) They only had it in red.

    Thanks OP!

  • due to the graphics onboard, do you guys agree that C-50 netbook would be better for flash based browser games compared to N570 or would the cpu have a greater effect on performance?

  • Battery Life=7.25H max,not bad
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-Eee-PC-1015B-Netboo…

    Classic Test
The range between the minimum and maximum battery runtime is generally not exactly vast. The Asus Eee PC 1015B reached 7 hours and 15 minutes in BatteryEater's Reader's test. The brightness and performance is reduced to the lowest possible level and functions, such as WLAN, are disabled for this. The netbook lasts approximately just as long in WLAN mode during practical use, as well. The 6 cell battery is good for 6 hours and 25 minutes here. We put the Asus netbook under load with the Classic test (high performance profile). The Asus Eee PC 1015B quit after 3 hours and 37 minutes in this test with its 56 watt hour lithium ion battery. The battery capacity is especially pleasing in full load, although other netbooks last considerably longer in idle mode

  • this must be a hot netbook, the first HN i rang had 3 left, and all three were snapped up while i was on the phone! but i pulled the trigger and bought one at another store, 6 cell battery and hdmi port clinched the deal

  • I was the OP on WP in the netbook pricewatch thread. I picked up one of these and am pretty happy with it. I'm yet to upgrade the 1GB RAM, although I will probably go to 2GB, which you can do without altering the Windows 7 starter OS.

So far, with wireless network on, downloading software & updates, uninstalling the usual junk, some web browsing while I wait, general office type work, the 6 cell battery has been getting around 8 hours (that's last night and tonight, I've only had it the 2 days).

No USB 3 - that is only on "selected models" i.e. none. Haven't tested out the hdmi yet. Gets slightly toasty after a few hours hard work, but not what I'd call hot just a little warm underneath in the centre. Keyboard and palm rest stay cool. Keyboard a little cramped, but it is a 10" so to be expected. I'm still able to touch type.

I thought I might have issues with the low res screen, but actually it is fine for the purpose.

The price cut finishes Sunday - unless sold out which they probably will.

So can confirm it is 6 cell battery, performance is pretty reasonable considering minimum RAM. But I did get a red one, so that would make it a little faster ;-)

  • Just been to HN Loganholme and theyve none left :( but theyve put an ACER AO522 in its place for the same price, $238. Looks like its got the exact same spec. Anyone know if its as good?? Will check the reviews when i get home later.

    • It's

      10.1 inch,1280X720 resolution
      mono speaker

    • its got a better HD screen..but asus generally has better build quality

  • just got one in Malaga (Perth) plenty of stock. Comes in black and is 6 cell 5200mAh

  • Mines red, not that im fussed

    Anyhow, this is useful:

    http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2011/08/get-missing-personalisa…

    • thanks was just googling this :)

  • only one unit left in Hobart, bought today, great little machine, gonna use it as my mobile HTPC server

  • Bout 15 left at ipswich. Just got one. Not on display though

  • A mate of mine said that Bondi is drowning in em with a complete colour range. Not on display, either.

  • Nice! Cheaper than previous deal http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/46844
Have N450 running XP wondering can it handle Win7 Ult with 1GB?

  • Got two on the weekend in blue. Great unit. Looks like HNs has put the price back to $496.

    • I got one just before closing yesterday, and yes, they did put the price back up. HDMI port is going to be very nice for when I'm home.

  • +1

Finally got to play with mine (a friend went to HN for me) and I can only come to this conclusion:

If you're using windows and don't completely hate yourself upgrade to 2gb of ram. How anyone would think this is a usable product with windows and 1gb of ram is beyond me.

Under linux you ought to be just fine with 1gb.

And now back to windows upgrade hell. It's been trying to install IE9 for the past hour.

    Sigh.
