  • Same story, but not quite sure why I need another one :)
Was thinking about keeping one connected to VPN whole time, but while I at home I can actually just start VPN app on each device I'm using from time to time, instead of having this little dude turned on full-time.
    Anyway great device.

    • I got one in the last sale. Seems good for travel for VPN and more access points. What would you do with more than one though?

      • One to use at home as AP for some services that require VPN, another one for trips :)

    • Can this be set up at home as VPN Server? So I can connect to home from anywhere?

      • Sorry dude, can't comment on this, I only used its VPN client part, but there is also a server: https://docs.gl-inet.com/en/3/app/openvpn/#openvpn-server

I think this answers your question, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvxTMCEEStI

Yes you can. The ability to create an OpenVPN or Wireguard server is built into the Gl.iNet interface on all their units so it's all click and play.

Couple of things you'd also need to consider:

        1. Need a public IP address/domain (DDNS service) on your main router.
        2. If it's behind your "main" router, you need to do a port forward to the server box
        3. Wireguard is faster than OpenVPN (though still not fully ratified)

I'm currently running their "fixed" router the B1300 as a Wireguard Server. It's connected directly to the NBN NTU. I have Gl.Inet's DDNS running (xxxxxx.glddns.com) and have set up multiple devices to connect including other Gl.Inet travel routers and Android devices (using the Wireguard app off the playstore). You do need to change your IP address in your client config to point to xxxxxx.glddns.com rather than the IP address of the Wireguard server (if you don't have a static IP).

        Heck, if I can do it…… :p

They also allow you to quite easily create software defined networking Site to Site networks easily via their GoodCloud cloud product. Haven't played with this however.

        Hope this helps.

  • Seems like a good enough price, cheers op

  • Bit off topic but does anyone know of a VPN provider that does Wireguard that would work with these?

    • +1

      AzireVPN.
      VPN.ac.
      TorGuard.
      Mullvad.
      IVPN.
      NordVPN (still in testing)
Private Internet Access (still in testing)

As long as they provide you a Wireguard client config file, should work!

      • Thanks.

I have an account with Nord but I couldn't work it out with their version.

        • AFAIK NordLynx (Nords "variation" of Wireguard) is currently only support under Linux.

When I travel I connect all my devices to my phones hotspot. So is this thing going to be any use to me? Or is this a case of 'if you have to ask, you don't need it (to complicated for you)'?

I'm the only user. I can run VPN software on the phone if required. I don't need a media server. Any other use?

Ah what the heck, I'll buy it and work it out later (true OzBargainer).

This just means 1 device connected to your hotspot rather than several. I used to have 4-5 devices hanging off my iPhone now I just hook this travel router to it and my devices hook to the travel router.

However this travel router also makes it easier to connect to 'free' wifi so my devices hook to that (via the travel router) instead of my phone.

    • Good question for a lot of us in the same boat. I’m buying one in case I ever need one. 😂

    • I honestly do not think you will find it useful. I also use my phone to hotspot or for wifi passthrough.

  • Does this work with iPhone USB tethering?

  • Thanks OP. Was about to buy a second one to serve as OpenVPN server at home and a third one to leave in the car as a "car hotspot". Already have one that travels with us on holidays.

  • Didn't even know I need one, still don't, but seems like a good deal and might come in useful in future, so bang!

  • Thanks OP. Ordered one to play with.

  • How do i connect a sim to this? So it becomes a wifi hotspot?

    • No native SIM/4G support but you can use a USB 3G/4G dongle as long as it's supported under OpenWRT.

  • What do people actually use this for? all I can imagine me doing is setting up a VPN for US NetFlix.

It depends on how much effort you want to put in.

These routers are particularly cool if you boot them with openwrt but it's not for the faint of heart, guis and guides aren't always available. I have a few of these and have used them for a few different things

Openwrt has a package called ddserver which allows you to access your dslr camera with your phone. You plug in the router to the USB port of your camera and can get a live view and set it to time lapse with the sunrise while slowly changing the ISO too. I'm no photographer but it was fun to take some timelapses of sunrises and sets.

I also have one in my car which has a 128gb USB on it that I sync movies to using rsync. Openwrt can mount USBs as samba shares which can be broadcast over WiFi so useful on long car trips with the kids. Plop a few seasons of bluey onto the USB stick and set the iPad or tablet to accept shares using Kodi and boom.

I also have used one to trigger a sensor but it's a bit overkill for that

Download the YouTube dl package and have it download your fave youtube series onto the network using a Cron job.

      Obviously openvpn too.

    • Some hotels offer a per device subscription, or only offer Ethernet, or you can use this to tap into the Ethernet ports for the hotel IPTV.

Chromecast in hotels. Allows me to connect to their Network, connect all our devices to this and then flick content to the Chromecast. Awesome tool.

  • I'm going to test my luck here…

Can I USB tether to this and I'm also guessing it doesn't use like USB to power?

    • 5V/1A MicroUSB to power. Type 2 USB port for storage/tether/4G USB dongle…….

  • I noticed that many just buy it for the sake of buying it, I think it'd be wiser to donate $23 bucks than buying yet another piece of tech that will end up in your drawer. All the latest Android phones have the ability to act exactly like this device (if you are buying this for travels).

    • Buying this as a repeater for my new house when it's built and ready.

  • Could I plonk this at the other end of my house and have it repeat my wifi network via my Powerline LAN adapter? Or at least a 2nd separate Wifi network using my home internet?

    • yes and yes. haven't tried it coz I've just got an old router on the powerline adapter but there is a wifi repeater setting which is nice.

  • I got this free with TorGuard years ago. Seems like a cool device but i don't use VPN's as much as i should. Gonna use it later as a wifi>lan bridge.

  • Damn 3rd time ive missed flash sale for these devices

  • I use this for inflight wifi with Virgin Australia and Qantas

Connect the GL.inet to plane wifi

All my devices hang off the GL.inet

Single login allows all devices access.

Also hotel rooms like others have mentioned - most hotels I stay at have multiple devices but with this it’s log in once and everything is connected

Chrome cast hanging off it to as others suggested

  • I have one of these and use it at home with the openvpn function for Netflix and Hulu. Works a treat!
