Cnut posted a deal earlier for the Atari X which got me searching for a deal I could actually get my hands on.

This deal is even better - cheaper, readily available, and a better console.

The Atari Flashback 9 is the one to get because unlike its predecessors or successor, it has an SD slot that you can use to play your own ROMs.

Controllers are wired (vs wireless on the 9 Gold, which is also twice the price at $112)

Enjoy!

Bittersweet reviews on Amazon, be aware

    • Yeah, same.

    • +1

True, but most of the negative reviews relate to the game selection rather than the quality of hardware or emulation. The SD slot on this one at least allows you to load other games of your choosing.

      • so the quality is pretty good?

Anything before NES is unplayable unless taken with a huge shot of nostalgia.

there's not enough drugs in the world to make these games enjoyable

      • +3

        Not true

    • Most of the NES games need it too.

Though there are many arcade games that are still good, there is Galaga and… well there is Galaga.

    • I couldn't play anything earlier than the Mega Drive or SNES.

  • What happened to the Altari console that was meant to come out?

    • +5

I heard they buried them in a pit somewhere…

Failed a spellcheck, so it was shelved

      • That reminds me of a story of a game that failed its Nintendo quality control check because it said Gamecube instead of GameCube.

  • Wonder if you can hack the "Blast" as i've seen them for as low as $15….

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Atari-Flashback-Blast-Electronic-G…

Still feel like $52 is too much for these. Are they any good?

    • The Blast is most likely a NES on a chip with the ROMs backed in, if this is a legit Atari based chip that plays Atari ROMs its the sort of thing I'd buy but a little broke right now.

I have the original Flashback that was a redesign of the Atari chipset and can be modded by adding a cartridge slot to play actual cartridges but only NTSC carts, rad little thing.

Do you reckon the price will go down or at least hold its price?

    • Get yourself a 28 degrees card with insurance and get back the difference in price if it drops within 12 months.

      • i've got 28 degrees but i probably don't have insurance?

        • Log in and activate it.

Pay it off before your bill issue date to avoid 1% fee.

          • @justtoreply: I thought it was 0.5% fee…

            • @SnoopX: A number of things changed, including the fee to 1%

          • @justtoreply: Yhey scrapped it to new customers a while back. Only for existing customers who had it activated prior

Credit card insurance: We are not currently issuing new policies.

I've got MAME and over 6000 roms collecting digital dust… think I'll give this a miss.

    • +1

Should’ve curated that list to the best 100 - 200 games.

      • +1

100% this. Don't bother getting the entire MAME collection, get the best of and you'll probably play it more frequently… Like once a year or something.

I do the same with the other Emulators, each ROM folder contains the best of with another folder holding the rest of the games. I never go into the rest of the games.

Thanks OP, was on the lookout for one of these!

  • If it had 2 of the controllers with the d-pad and two red buttons like my Atari 2600 had, I would have considered this.

    • The controllers on the box are the original style 2600 controllers, the controllers you are referring to came with the later Junior consoles.

      • I know, but I prefer the controllers that I had with my 2600. Much easier to use.

        • The controllers plugin via the same 9 pin D sub connector so I reckon there's a good chance those ones would work.

  • gone up to $66, i'm sorry i'm not going to invest, i'm oot.
