21 Studio Ghibli Films Included with Netflix Subscription

79222

From Press Start Article

Beginning in February, 21 Studio Ghibli films will receive a staggered release on Netflix, with all available by April. These films have notoriously been unavailable digitally until recently when they became available in the US on iTunes and VUDU and will later be available on HBO Max in the US. Australia is one of the countries lucky enough to receive the films with a comparatively cheap Netflix subscription.

Yes, I know this is advertising content for a paid streaming service but these films are quite expensive to purchase elsewhere and subscription services such Xbox Game Pass additions have been posted in the past as deals where the content was deemed to be an addition which held considerable value to consumers. Hopefully the same rules apply here.
The release schedule is as follows:

FEBRUARY 1ST

Castle in the Sky (1986)
My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)
Only Yesterday (1991)
Porco Rosso (1992)
Ocean Waves (1993)
Tales from Earthsea (2006)

MARCH 1ST

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
Princess Mononoke (1997)
My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999)
Spirited Away (2001)
The Cat Returns (2002)
Arrietty (2010)
The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (2013)

APRIL 1ST

Pom Poko (1994)
Whisper of the Heart (1995)
Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)
Ponyo (2008)
From Up on Poppy Hill (2011)
The Wind Rises (2013)
When Marnie Was There (2014)

      I found Netflix online.

  • (profanity). Yes.

  • +1

    (Profanity)!!!

Just when I cancelled my subscription because of no interest…. ;(

    Netflix's reply to Disney+?

  • I remember seeing the earlier movies on SBS and they had an introduction with some movie historian_ I wish netflicks had an option where you could watch little background of the film etc ..but avoid grave of fireflies unless you want to be depressed for a few weeks

  • +1

Nice deal OP. Very very good deal

  • +1

    Any love for Porco Rosso?

    • Loved it. Based on the same genre as Indiana Jones, would you say?

      • Yep, would be in my top 5 anime

  • To those people whinging about this not being a deal:

Yes, technically you are correct, and this is obvious. Yet as I speak, there are 310 upvotes.
How could that be??? Please ponder that a little.

    • -1

      Herd mentality?

    • +4

You don't need to comment to upvote. That skews it.

I guess mods can do another public poll where you don't need to comment to vote (like the Xbox pass one)? For that one there were hardly any downvotes but when it went to poll a lot more appeared.

      • +2

You make a valid point, the +/- is skewed, it is not a valid poll.

But why, when the facts are clearly in your favour, have hundreds of people bothered to vote? this is not normal.
Clearly there is something exceptional here, that makes people willing to bend the rules.

        • +4

I don't necessarily think this is not a deal. Just needs to be worded like a deal. Crucial things like savings, price etc. are not clear even though it's mentioned in the comments a lot.

Right now this post is just reads like an advert.

OP States it in the description. "I know this is advertising content for a paid streaming service"….and I think that's exactly what it is.

I think if any change is made, Netflix etc will be included

    • -2

has been said a million times, upvotes is in NO way an indication of a posts popularity
the simple fact that it is much harder to have a down vote remain given the strict rules regarding down voting.
it literally takes nothing to upvote, you need to have a valid reason and comment to down vote

  • Have seen Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and When Marnie Was There and all seemed pretty good. Would recommend these ones. Does anyone else have any recommendations? Thanks

    • +1

In the list i would say: Porco Rosso, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke

      • Oh thanks heaps, I'll check them out then :)

        • +3

Please also watch "My Neighbor Totoro".

          • @Nalar: Oh thanks, I'll add that to my watch list too :)

  • +1

Never watched these but have always wanted to. Thanks, OP, had no idea.

  • Just noticed, there's no Grave of the Fireflies?

    • +1

      Too sad.

  • I have been hanging out for a ghibli box set at a semi-affordable price for a long long time.

This is the next best "fully legal" readily available option.

    Thanks op!

  • Fantastic deal, previously I would've had to pay $30 a movie to watch them. Now I can just renew my Netflix sub. Thanks OP!

  • +1

    Pom Poko FTW YAAAy

    • Gotta love those magical testicle

Same rules need to be enforced to cast an upvote

Ozbargain is such an echo chamber

Is this site like Bluray.com now??

  • +5

Great information but not a deal. This sort of thing could done so many times for other subscription services. Breaking the rules because the robotic "in" crowd like it is just absurd.

    • +6

'Robotic in crowd'? At the time of writing this comment, from the 840 people who clicked on this deal, half of them, or 420, decided to click and give it an upvote. I think that's a pretty clear indication that the vast majority of people found value in the deal and saw it as such. If you don't see things that way then you are completely entitled to your opinion, but it's a bit naive to think that just because you don't agree with something it must be the work of some kind of deluded minority.

      • +1

i think they're just upvoting because of their favourite childhood movies

      • +1

      • Haha … I upvoted because I thought it is a ridiculous deal and would get moderated in no time. Ah well … that did not work out! Guess it is a hidden paid advertising for Netflix ?

  • +5

This isn’t a deal - allowing such posts creates a ‘floodgates’ situation whereby any new non-original title added to a streaming service could be justified as being a ‘deal’ sufficient to be posted

    • +8

And yet these types of deals have been posted in the past and the 'flood gates' remain shut. People are not stupid, they can decipher for themselves which additions to streaming services constitute enough value to warrant a post like this and which ones do not.

    • If it gets this many upvotes it should be allowed.

  • Ummm where's Grave of the Fireflies???

The most wonderful, uplifting movie release by the studio….

    Seriously, a Brilliant movie

OMG, settle down. I recently paid $400 to buy most of the Ghibli DVDs when the 20% off JB deal was posted on OzB.

Had I seen this I would have saved $400. I pay for Netflix and didn't know Ghibli was coming. Thanks for posting. If you don't think it's a deal don't read the 300 comments and don't neg it, and move on. If you think it belongs somewhere else, you might be right but most people only read the home page where the bargains are.

    • And if you didn't buy the DVDs you wouldn't be able to watch the movies in the future once the deal Netflix has with the studio has expired. Ozbargain isn't a Netflix coming soon blog; these movies are easily discovered in Netflix's coming soon tab.

  • +1

A bit off topic but after watching Meitantei Conan (Detective Conan), this is a very good addition to Netflix. So I think its a deal because it adds value.

Cant wait for Katrielle Layton episodes to come into Netflix.

  • +5

Y'all are crazy, this is the best post I've seen on ozb in months. Really sad people are complaining this is here.

  • +2

My most loved Ghibli movies start coming on Netflix in Feb and my bday is in Feb.
    What a great present.
And I'm surprised Soo many people in ozbargain upvoted Ghibli.
    This is a fantastic deal.

  • +4

I logged in just to upvote this deal.

…and use my daily downvote quota on the haters.

    As you were.

  • A new Netfilx movie !!! I vote positive ! Must get this deal !!!

  • +2

Upvoted just because I think these type of posts deserve space in the deals forum. And also these films are absolute gems.

People will vote with their votes to determine whether it's worthwhile anyway. Why make restrictive rules when things will filter themselves by the community reception anyway. It will just add more work for the admins/mods for no perceivable benefit.

Lets see how many people who are interested. ( Its going to be silence or real interested people.

🤣 Love a marketing ad in a middle of turmoil.

Scotty has not approved this message lol

  • +1

    FYI

If you want a good laugh watch Seiki on netflix

  • +7

Technically not a bargain, although Ghibli films are amazing

  • This must've been quite the coup, because if I recall correctly Ghibli was distributed locally by Buena Vista Entertainment, who also had the rights to Disney. So that means the Disney Plus shakeup set these loose and allowed them to be snapped up by Netflix.

Anyway, I'm happy. Finally get to catch a few of the ones I've missed over the years but couldn't justify spending the $$$ to buy.

EDIT: and gave it a + vote to poo-poo the haters. These days OzBargain is as much a notification service for the good things in life as much as it is about actual bargains.

  • Didnt read all the previous comments (maybe this has already been stated), but this is not available to US netflix accounts.
    http://www.newsonjapan.com/html/newsdesk/article/126219.php

  • Are these going to be in Japanese with English subs, or English dub?

    • +1

      Usually bilingual with subs optional

      I guess its a yes?
"For the first time ever, this expansive catalogue of Studio Ghibli films will be subtitled in 28 languages, and dubbed in up to 20 languages."

  • I wonder, if this content is going to be available all over the world or only in custom countries.. Although, I am super happy, that finally Ghibli productions made to the streaming services

  • For young kids I’ve found totoro (of course) , kikis delivery service, ponyo , the cat returns and porco rosso to be good. Of those , The cat returns is probably the favourite. Explaining the characters and story would never do it justice.. but just remember if you’re ever in trouble… Baron Humbert von Gikkingen is at your service.

  • +2

Once again like the GTAV on Xbox subscription. Can't wait for a solution such as the option to hide these posts suggested in the forum thread by moderator Neil.

    • I bet you’re fun at parties

  • +1

Every full priced movie costs more to buy on Blu-ray than 1 month of Netflix. This is not a deal.

  • +1

Wonder why Grave of the Fireflies isn't on the list? (I think that is one of their "strongest" movies.) I can understand Iblard Jikan being overlooked but Grave or even the recent "The Red Turtle"?

  • -3

This is forum post material. We don't have OzRipOff when studios pull their content from Netflix, do we?

  • +2

    How is this a deal?

    • It isn't. It's just content added to a paid streaming service.

      • Content which would otherwise cost you on average $30 per film with no other renting, streaming or digital purchase options available. Not all content is created equal; these films offer incredible high value as a Netflix streaming option compared to the limited alternative options available to view them legally.

  • Anyone know if it was specified how long they would be on netflix? Or is it not known yet?

  • Recently watched The Wind Rises, amazing animation and beautiful story telling.

  • -2

This is NOT a deal, this is an announcement of something being added to a subscription based service
Same as Games Pass games. Be interesting to see what decision is made given the votes/comments on https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/510579

  • So which ones would be the top 3.

I’ve seen moving castle and it was ok but was a long time ago.

    • +1

Princess Mononoke is my top one for sure 👌

      • Thanks.

  • +1

I just wanted to say my favourite one out of this set is Laputa and IMHO it is the best - before i give my reason for this neg.
If there was a deal saying that the Ocean's, Expendables, X-men series will be on Netflix…. would it be a deal? Isn't it just a bonus in addition to what is already being paid for?

    • -2

It's a deal because it offers value compared to other ways of viewing the same content. Not all films have equal value; Ocean's, Expendables and X-Men can all be bought or rented for next to nothing where Studio Ghibli films cannot. You cannot rent these films digitally, you cannot buy them digitally, you can only buy physical copies which cost around $30 and rarely come down in price. The deal highlights you can now get 21 such films for the cost of a Netflix subscription. That's a considerable saving over the alternative if you want to watch them legally in any way. If there's value and savings to be found then it's a deal, and I believe you're getting that here.

      • +1

I guess because it’s 21 it’s actually really good value (tbh it saves me from getting them from elsewhere and I’m pretty glad about that).

  • thank you!

  • Profound cartoons !

  • +1

Never heard about any of these

  • -4

    New deal
Netflix to stream new season of 'Stranger Things' AND the first two are also available.

-> Neg reason, not a deal, this is a feature if anything.

  • -3

I must be old haha had to google what they are…didn’t realise we had that many members that loved cartoons. My kids watch cartoons sometimes and they are both under 10 so does that mean we have a lot of kids as members?

    • If you had to Google some of the most critically acclaimed and beloved animated films of the last 40 years and still just come away with the impression of them just being ‘kids cartoons’ then this deal is definitely not for you.

    • Not a valid Neg Vote by Posting Guidelines

      How old are you billybob1978??
Didn't know age had anything to do with appreciation of good movies. But then I'm likely much older than you😉

The first film was released (in Japan) in 1984, with English dub versions around 1998.

English dubbed versions have shown on SBS here for many years.
SBS Movie Channel had free Studio Ghibli Movie Marathons every weekend in July last year.
There was a free viewing on SBS today! - probably repeated at other times.

      They definitely aren't simple cartoons!
      Rather, crafted story telling.

Apparently an acquired taste, not suited to billybob1978😀

  • -1

    Can I record it?

  • The Wind Rises FREE!
    SBS World Movies channel

    Today 17:10-19:30
    Probably repeated at other times
