21 Studio Ghibli Films Included with Netflix Subscription

79222

From Press Start Article

Beginning in February, 21 Studio Ghibli films will receive a staggered release on Netflix, with all available by April. These films have notoriously been unavailable digitally until recently when they became available in the US on iTunes and VUDU and will later be available on HBO Max in the US. Australia is one of the countries lucky enough to receive the films with a comparatively cheap Netflix subscription.

Yes, I know this is advertising content for a paid streaming service but these films are quite expensive to purchase elsewhere and subscription services such Xbox Game Pass additions have been posted in the past as deals where the content was deemed to be an addition which held considerable value to consumers. Hopefully the same rules apply here.
The release schedule is as follows:

FEBRUARY 1ST

Castle in the Sky (1986)
My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)
Only Yesterday (1991)
Porco Rosso (1992)
Ocean Waves (1993)
Tales from Earthsea (2006)

MARCH 1ST

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
Princess Mononoke (1997)
My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999)
Spirited Away (2001)
The Cat Returns (2002)
Arrietty (2010)
The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (2013)

APRIL 1ST

Pom Poko (1994)
Whisper of the Heart (1995)
Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)
Ponyo (2008)
From Up on Poppy Hill (2011)
The Wind Rises (2013)
When Marnie Was There (2014)

      Big cartoons.

        Big cartoons

        • +1

          My mistake.

    • +4

No, a ‘cartoon’ is a form of animation, the term does not apply to all animation. These are some of the of the most critically praised Japanese animations of all time and have until now been only available on physical media that is rarely discounted by the distributor of these films, hence the deal.

      • JB has regular 20% off DVD and Bluray sales.

    • +1

      Poor troll lol.

      You gotta lift your game.

  • +15

Watched a lot of these for free recently on SBS World Movies (channel 32). Also on demand at SBS On Demand.

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya Sun 26/1 8:20pm on SBS World Movies

    • +6

SBS On Demand is a great service; definitely recommend checking out any of these films that are available there.

    • +2

Studio Ghibli Films were shown on Saturdays last year on SBS Movies Channel. Still regularly shown there.
Unfortunately don't seem to be on SBS On Demand any more.

  • +3

I've only seen Spirited Away and Totoro. Any recommendations for the next I should watch?

    • +13

Princess Mononoke is my favourite, followed by Howl’s Moving Castle. There isn’t a bad film among them though really.

      • +1

Yep i was going to say Princess Mononoke too.
        But everyone has their favorites.

      • The man has refined taste. Soundtrack for Princess Mononoke is great too

    • +5

Kiki’s Delivery Service and Howl’s Moving Castle IMO.

      • +1

Recently watched Kiki’s Delivery Service and Howl’s Moving Castle on SBS World Movies channel (free).
Especially loved KDS - popular with adults in reviews.

    • +6

Princess Mononoke is my absolute favorite. Like, holy shit is that movie (and the soundtrack) amazing. Top 10 of all time for me.

Kiki's Delivery Service is a very happy and enjoyable movie without too much of the heavy themes and life lessons a lot of the other movies have. It's just a fun and breezy ride.

Nausicaa is a very good movie but pretty out there, it gets real weird.

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya is an absolutely gorgeous movie with a different artstyle and with a beautiful theme and classic fairytale story.

How's Moving Castle is pretty nice, beautiful animation.

Ponyo is another one that i really liked too.

Now, another recommendation for an amazing anime that is not Studio Ghibli, is Your Name. That movie got me crying hard. Absolutely worth the watch, the animation and art here manage to be superior even to the Ghibli movies.

      • The mangaka you are referring too is Makoto Shinkai.

        Voices of a Distant Star
The Place Promised in Our Early Days
        5 Centimeters per Second
        Children Who Chase Lost Voices
        The Garden of Words
        Your Name
        Weathering With Yo

I wont really say superior as one heavily emphasize on hand drawing (Hayao Miyazaki) and the other like all young and new mangaka (computer CGI -Makoto Shinkai)

Makoto Shinkai stories are more towards llove stories while Studio Ghibli is more family entertainment.

    • +2

It doesn't matter which. Watch them all.

It's like Pixar, only better. Pixar may have had one or two you could miss.

My favourite is Grave of the Fireflies, but that's just me. (Not for children.)

    • NinoKuni is already streaming on Netflix

      • To be honest I prefer the original ps3 version better but there is ahem a cameo of a character.

    • Porco Rosso!!

    • Nausicaa is amazing.
Princess Mononoke is pretty good too.
Cat Returns is bit out there but fun watch (but underrated imo).

    • Whisper of the heart.

      It under rates but great

  • +18

Shame there’s no Grave Of The Fireflies. One of the most amazing and sad films I’ve ever seen.

  • +9

I just positive these deals because of all the angry people giving negs in here.

  • +7

You paid your subscription to get watch shows. What's the deal?

    • +6

Agreed, it belongs in the forums. It is not a bargain…

    • +10

The deal is that these specific films hold significant commercial value, moreso than most content on Netflix. Today you would pay roughly $630 to watch all of these films because there is no alternative but to buy them on physical media at full RRP because they rarely come down in price. From Feb 1 you can watch them for about $10, or pay nothing more if you have an existing subscription. If you are in the market to watch these films then this is a deal.

      • +3

Netflix shows/movies come and go all the time. Why don't you remind me every time by posting a deal.

Forums is where this belongs. If people care about these subscription services changes, they can follow the thread themselves.

        • +2

This isn’t a reminder, it represents as substantial addition of value to what a Netflix subscription offers. This is also a deal that is unique to Australia with most other countries requiring additional streaming services or having to purchase each film individually, rather than them being offered through a service like Netflix which a large percentage of the population already have in their households.

      • +1

You're implying people will watch all of them in a month. And no one will spend $630 to buy them all when you can buy boxsets with multiple ghibli movies for much less. Also don't forget that this is going to be in lower quality than what a blu-ray provides. It's good, but you're exaggerating how good it is.

        • +2

          omg who cares

        • +1

I’m simply stating what the next legal alternative to watch the films costs. For the record, no you cannot spend less on box set with multiple Ghibli movies. There was a Miyazaki box set which existed that contains SOME of these films but it is now out of print and sells on eBay for more than the cost of buying the discs individually.

          • @mr_me450: i have the box set and you are right it's around $300 for 11 movies. it is still available (e.g. MightyApe.com.au), but i bought from JB when it was buy one box set get one free. It was the only way i could make it better value. you could occssionally get 20% off too.

  • +7

Probably should be the forums. But if we're letting Gamepass games count why not this?

    • You sound like a Ghibli

  • +1

In before the admin removes this as a "joke post"

  • +3

If this is a deal then so are torrent sites which give away movies for free.

    • +7

      This is legal

    • +2

Why would stealing a product be comparable to a cheap, legal way of obtaining it?

      • You wouldnt steal a handbag…

        OR

        A car…

        • Feels like the 80’s

        • You wouldn't download a car

          • -2

@bluebo: It's not the idea of download, but the idea of 'copy'.

We have been copying EVERYTHING our whole lives.
            It's how we have evolved.

            It's not stealing if it's a copy,
however due to patent / copyright laws (which is a relatively new thing),
copying is also analogous to stealing.

            (See how it's called "copy-right"?)

The thing is, with this cyber-age,
we are able to transmit/transfer a copy at the speed of light.
Then, keep a copy of that, at the new destination.

Imagine the day, you can transmit a copy of (or just the real) car.

It would then re-define the idea of 'ownership'.

          • @bluebo: I would.

  • +1

It is my belief that The Tale of The Princess Kaguya is the reason why Miyazaki never retires. Takahata made the best and transcendent movie that Miyazaki cannot make and took it to his grave.

The movie should be watched in full blu-ray quality with DTS Master, the artwork and sound quality is superb.

  • Netflix 4K/4 stream is still overpriced.

    • +1

I'm sharing my plan between 5 people. Helps with cost.

      • What if your all watching at the same time?

        • +3

It's a risk but never something that we've encountered before. If it did happen once in a while, I wouldn't care. But what i've found is what when you've had netflix for a few months, you don't watch it all the time after that.

        • +1

You learn who is hogging it the most and cut them off. You give one person a password and suddenly four people in their household is using it, meaning no one else in your group buy can watch. Nothing is worse than not being able to use a service you’re paying for, except maybe war and famine.

    • +1

These films wont be in 4k though, so the mid tier HD plan is sufficient

      • Their mid tier plan only comes with two streams though right?

  • What's the deal with these movies? The majority seem a bit before my time but I'm keen to watch if they're worth it.

    • some of the best things that came out from Japan imo

      • Some of the best animated movies ever!

And most are available dubbed, which I tend to prefer for animation, if done well.
So don't let the "Japan" part put you off.

    • Have a try of Princess Mononoke and see how you go

      • Googling this just jump started my memory! I loved Spirited Away. Can't wait to watch more from this studio :)

    • Think of Studio Ghibli as the Japan division of Disney, except they never gave up on 2D animation.

  • -6

Additional content isn't a deal if you need a subscription. We need to take a stand otherwise nothing will change.

This isn't Nam, there are rules.

    • +2

Who is this "we" you speak of?

  • 👀

  • KURAU

  • +1

I may resume my Netflix membership only to catch up on those. So for me, definitely a deal. Thanks OP.

  • +1

How silly movies added on netflix belongs in the forums not posted as a deal sorry.

    • +1

These aren't movies. It's some weird shit called anime

      • -1

Not really "anime" in the usual sense. Just regular animation that happens to come from Japan.
        Definitely not "Manga".

      • Hmm it's even worse than I've imagined lol

    • I bet you’re fun at parties

  • +14

I would not have seen a forum post, so thanks for the deal OP.

    • +8

This. As if ozbargain is going to run out of space cause this is posted as a deal lol

      • +3

The bigger frustration is the literring of comment threads from JV and her "iT's nOt A deEEAaaL~" crusaders.

          Actually JV barely complained

This post is sponsored by Netflix.
Maybe 'significant' forum posts should be highlighted on the front page.

  • +7

Got excited thinking it was a Netflix subscription discount. Just wanting to understand whether new studio catalogue releases on streaming services bargains? Its not a discount, it's an addition to content.

    • +3

What's the other alternative to watch all the titles for as low as a Netflix subscription?
If there is none, then it's a deal.

      • +9

The alternatives are the bargains available for purchase of these films. Im an cinephile and for how many studios are added to streaming services, it seems excessive that it's considered a bargain when there's no reduction in the subscription price or offered discount. Just an opinion though :)

        • The alternatives are the bargains available for purchase of these films. Im an cinephile

Really? A real fan of a band collects every bootleg recording they can.
A diehard Star Wars fan even has a download of the Holiday Special (but may not admit it).

          • +2

@bargaino: I'm just a fan of cinema, collecting bootlegs isn't what I'd call a "fan" but each to their own I guess!

If anything, why would one bother to watch a much awaited movie in such poor quality?

            • +1

@FlatulentFrank: Oh, I agree with you there on bootleg early release "cam jobs", and I think the majority of people do.
Was trying to make an analogy to the music business.
Being happy to pay (reasonable) money, and willing to download movies or music you love, are not mutually exclusive.
Try to see the nuance. I'm more familiar with music, where the biggest illicit downloaders tend to also be the biggest spenders. I see no reason why it is not the same with cinema. Piracy is not the threat that certain institutions make out.

      • +2

Give me a cheaper & legal alternative instead of negging me. Gee people

      • Same can be said for almost anything available to stream on Netflix

        • Tbh when I still had a Netflix subscription, I was only watching series. All their movies have already been broadcasted 20 times on free to air television…

        • +2

The same could not be said for everything else on Netflix because not everything holds the same commercial value or is as difficult to access by cheap and legal means as Studio Ghibli films.

    • +1

For argument’s sake, a Netflix subscription discount of 50% would save you $5 for a month; if you want to watch Studio Ghibli films then this will save you ~$620, as your only alternative before was to buy the films at around $30 a pop. That’s the deal.

      • +3

If that's the deal….then post that in the title or description. That'll be more accurate.

        • +2

It would in no way be more accurate. Netflix subscription prices vary and the estimate of $30 per blu-Ray/DVD is an average based on what I’ve seen online, not a hard number. It is more concise and less convoluted to leave the title as it stands, allowing people to determine the value of the deal based on their own circumstances concerning Netflix.

  • +8

Price or savings % in title please.

    Otherwise not a deal.

+/- votes are always going to be skewed as you do not need to post a comment to vote +

    • +2

Your cheapest alternative to watch these films legally is to purchase them at ~$30 each. There is no option to rent them digitally in Australia and physical video stores are largely extinct. To stream them with a Netflix subscription will cost you ~$10 if you watch them within a month. This represents a potential savings of $620, or 98.42% cheaper than the next available alternative. Mods can update the title with that if they think it’s necessary.

      • +3

He he, I hope the title gets updated with that
        up to 98.42% off :-)

      • +6

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:title_guidelines

        Titles should state:-

        1. Product model.

        2. Price.

        3. Shipping cost.

        4. Company/merchant.

        5. Location.

Right now your post isn't reflective of a "deal". Merely a PSA on an article elsewhere. In fact you mention yourself that you acknowledge that this is just advertisement content.

I'd be inclined to vote +ve if the description to show that this is a deal was better, even if under the premise "no cheaper alternative" available.

        • +7

Clearly a lot of people have found value in this deal and had no issue with the title. I am happy to make changes if mods feel it is necessary but so far they seem content with the title and description too. Perhaps we need clearer guidelines for deals posted about subscription based content but for now I’m modelling this deal on how I have seen similar deals described in the past.

      • -1

You're comparing renting films through a subscription to buying a physical product you can potentially keep for the rest of your life. There is no 98% saving here because the products do not compare. If you want to compare fairly, you should deduct the resale value of the disks if you sold them all after owning for a month. A quick look at ebay suggests they are selling close to that $30 you've suggested the new disks go for, so seems like the cost of renting by buying them is only a couple dollars per movie, and you won't have to binge all of them within a month.

  • +1

they're so easy to find online though if you really wanted to…
