Women knowing how to kick balls is not a good thing

  • +8

I don't have a problem with AFLW or people who decide to watch or follow it. Even though the quality of the sport and players is objectively poor, people are free to watch sport of any standard. I watch the A League soccer and that is questionable at times.

What I do have a problem with is the media saturation of the competition, the unwarranted proportion of coverage over other sports, the AFL claims that it's the first national competition for women etc. etc. This is done by making the all tickets free and then promoting "large crowds".

    • +4

Beyond annoying when their AFL FB page constantly posts Women's news….

I only would have given it any time had they worked their way up to a national professional competition rather than just start as one. The standards were abysmal.

      • +4

Agreed. They need to create a separate AWFL news page and leave all AWFL content off the main page. Forcing it on people is not gonna pique their interest lol

        • +1

They already have one and still do it… absolutely stupid.

  • +7

These comments. I guarantee those women are better than everyone in this thread at the majority of sports.

    • -1

Then you’ve not watched any actual AWFL games because the skill level for the most part is just abysmal.

      • +8

Comparing the women's game to the men's (which has had over 100 years and billions of dollars worth of development and support) is ridiculous.

        • +3

It's going to hold true regardless because women are physically inferior to men in every possible way when it comes to anything athletic. The gap is so massive, it's ridiculous.

          • @infinite: It really doesn't follow to say "women are physically inferior to men in every possible way" to argue the specific point "those women are better than everyone in this thread at the majority of sports".

    • +5

      Yeah probably not mate.

The physicality difference between men and women is so great, even male sunday league players would probably beat professional women players and that's not being sexist like people are trying to push here.

The US Women's National Team (the best national team in women's football) literally got hammered by the Dallas U-15 team, let alone an even more contact and physical sport like AFL.

      • -2

To be fair, he's not comparing AFLW with other athletes, he's comparing them with people in this thread. People posting here, I guess would be, on average, older and would already not be as fit as the AFLW players, let alone not having skills training and natural athletic ability.

      • Fascinating just read up on this. Thanks

    • What does that have to do from a consumer point of view? The best of the best still get criticised when they play poor, it is what it is.

    • +2

I guarantee those women are better than everyone in this thread at the majority of sports.

I guarantee that any men's local footy team would thrash them.

      • +1

Yep. And yet these men's local league players would be getting paid far less than any of those AWFL players. Where's the equality in that?

  • +6

I was sceptical but have really enjoyed a few of these games that ive been to.. Definitely worth a try!

  • +5

It's free, I don't get what all the hate is about. I've been to a game with friends when we had nothing better to do and while it's obviously not the same skill level as men's, it was still pretty entertaining. Good day out for the family

    • +1

      Hate? It's more like ribbing/teasing.

I've been to a game with friends when we had nothing better to do

I'd say that's the reason why others go to watch it as well.

    • +7

while it's obviously not the same skill level as men's, it was still pretty entertaining

The same way watching under 12's fumble and rolling pack maul the ball forward is entertaining ;)

      It's horrific to watch IMO.

      • I agree but not with your perspective. It's the same way A-league games can be entertaining even though the skill level is dreadful compared to foreign leagues. It's just fun to cheer on your team and be a part of the overall atmosphere

        • +1

Maybe fun for some as just a nice day out, for people who don’t appreciate the skills of the game as much. But I wanna see amazing goals and fast action and big marks. You just don’t get that in AFLW.

  • +5

I'm not a fan. I wont attend even if its free.

  • I'd take my daughter's to a game as it's free but looks like there are no local teams to me. Guess I'll have to go to some Mariners games if I want to see live sport but that's probably lower quality than watching AFLW!

    • Should move to a capital city.

      • +2

So that I can watch a AFLW game? Pass.

  • +5

An honest opinion about the women’s game is not hate, it’s just an honest opinion.

  • -5

You all understand that the skill level isn't as high because it is a new league and these women don't get paid enough to make training their full time jobs, right?

There are some veryyyy fragile boys in these comments.

    • +10

It doesn't change the fact that the skill level is low compared to the men.

There are some veryyyy fragile boys in these comments.

Seems like it's the fragile women that are upset that others don't think watching the WAFL is worth it, even for free.

      • +6

I don't get why there are so many fragile people droning on and on about sexism.

It's not the fact women are the ones playing, it's the fact the quality and skill level is piss poor (no matter what reason it is). It's the same reason I wouldn't go watch National League games when I travel to England when I could be attending Premier League or Championship games.

      • Long distance swimming

    • +6

"these women don't get paid enough"

They can barely fill seats when basically giving away tickets, how are they gonna make money to justify paying them?

    • +5

My wife thinks it’s shizenhouzen to watch as well. FYI. It’s not just boys who think it’s a dud sport.

Good on you for trying to make it a sexist thing when it’s actually not. Golf clap.

It’s simply a dud spectacle. I think you’ll find many men commenting here that you say are “fragile” who would happily watch any female sport if it’s a good spectacle or highly skilled at least. AFLW is neither no matter how much the AFL try to pretend it is. It’s really that simple.

      • who would happily watch any female sport if it’s a good spectacle or highly skilled at least.

The netball is a far better spectacle to watch.

    • Yeah Nah. Olympic Games only allowed amateur athletes prior to 1971 and at time it was also common for RLF & AFL players to work full time jobs to supplement minimal match fees. Are you suggesting the olympics and was of a low skill level because athletes were not paid?

Your emotional statement is a failure to express a love of the game only an ideological desire to support unearned benefits and attention for a select group.

It doesn't change the claim that the skill level is poor.

  • +9

Footballers prior to the 90’s were not full time and often had day time jobs. Didn’t seem to hinder their champion skills.

    • +4

Yup exactly. Particularly when you go back to mid 20th century when the game was fast, exciting and brutal, and still attracted huge crowds.

These apologists are making every excuse under the sun for the p*ss poor spectacle that is the AWFL.

  • I'd actually go if my team had an AFLW license. As it is, I'm not actually willing to support a competitor club in any way.

    • +7

I reckon you'll only go once or twice before you realise it's not much more interesting than watching the pigeons in the stands scavenging for crumbs….

      • +2

        Harsh but fair.

  • +2

Bums on seats. That’s what it’s all about folks. Same as whenever the pay argument pops up. Male athletes are paid more than women because there is more demand. Simple really.

  • +4

This is just a 5th column effort from feminists against the AFL. Give it a couple of years and they will be making gender pay claims like the Matildas. Yes those Matilda's who can't defeat a regional team of 13-14 year old boys going down 7-0 against the Newcastle Jets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkUBzhDmj18 https://youtu.be/uqK5mqpf-eE?list=WL&t=298.

Considering the quality this is fair market value and not a bargain.

  • +6

How do you know if someone doesn't like AFLW?
    They'll tell you.

  • Wow, last year's premiers, Adelaide Crows, only have one game actually in Adelaide (round 8 at Unley Oval) - all their other "home" games are at Hisense Stadium in Melbourne.

  • +2

I'm really glad the knuckle-draggers have come out of their caves to give us their opinions on this topic.

    • +2

So people are only allowed to have an option if it’s in line with your views?

    • +2

Ad hominem statement, no facts - name checks out

  • +9

girls should stick to girls' sports, such as hot-oil wrestling, foxy boxing, and such-and-such

    • +4

i cant believe you wrote that….that is so wrong.. its women not girls.

      • +3

        Whoosh … It's a classic Simpsons quote

    • +1

"We no can dunk but good fundamentals - more fun to watch."

  • OP is incorrect.
Collingwood v Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Friday February 28 is NOT free entry.
It is being played as a curtain raiser to the State of Origin Bushfire Appeal game which costs $20+ for a ticket.

  • People don't get it, it's not about who is 'better' but just supporting everyone equally, any effort is better than none at all

    • +2

Why should the AFLW get equal coverage to men's AFL on TV? Why don't the state, local leagues, Aus-Kick have all their games televised?

  • +1

If sport was only about watching the best quality then there would be no functioning leagues or competitions.

Sport is about entertainment. Any argument that the quality of this particular sport is lower is missing the point.

Whether or not you find this entertaining is up to how open minded you are.

It's like ruling out foreign films due to subtitles. It's not racist but you're missing out on great entertainment. And you probably don't go out of your way to say all foreign films are sh*t.

    • +2

"Whether or not you find this entertaining is up to how open minded you are."

So it's not possible for an open minded person to look at this sport and think 'it doesn't interest me'?

I attended last year's WAFL final and enjoyed the game despite it being very one sided, but I won't deny that the only reason I went to see the game was because it was free with free public transport.

    • +1

If I could retire and do nothing, I'd probably watch foreign movies all day.

    • +1

I think most people find that a low "quality" sports competition isn't entertaining at all.

  • +1

No bargain here. It's free. Same as going to the park or the beach

  • +2

Don't they want equal pay to the men?

    And the games are free?

    Hmmmmm.

    • Even the AFLW isn't stupid enough to ask for equal pay to the men. I think you're thinking of the Matildas (Female soccer team).

      • +1

I believe they've asked to be FT professional too.

        • +4

Full time for a 8 round competition? LOL. These women sure think highly of themselves.

          • @jelko: They want a longer season.

            • +3

@Randolph Duke: They want a longer season but it's evident their wants are not supported by the PAYING public. Clearly it's a substandard product subsidized by ideologues.

              • @[Deactivated]: Yes, it’s disgusting to see the multi billion dollar not for profit football industry trying to get women’s football up.

                • @Randolph Duke: Why is it disgusting?

                  • @ozhunter: I’m paraphrasing all the sooks, I don’t think it’s disgusting at all.

                • @Randolph Duke: Hello Comrade, I didn't recognise you "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" (Karl Marx 1875). The proletariat must maintain unity in the revolutionary struggle against the common enemy. I leave this video from defector Yuri Bezmenov https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLqHv0xgOlc

                  • @[Deactivated]: It’s a private not for profit entity (worth millions) selling a product to a commercial television network (again, worth millions). Ship off with the Communism comparisons. Free market at work. If it’s not popular it won’t be renewed by the broadcaster.

  • +3

No surprise that this is free.

  • +3

Thanks OP. If you do give it a go and enjoy it. Think about becoming a AFLW member, it's cheap. My daughter, neices and I love going, watching, talking to the players and kicking the footy around after. Such a positive local footy feel. See you at Casey! Go the Dee's!

  • +1

    AfLw EqUaL pAy!

  • +1

Probably need to take a leaf out of the Legends Football League.

It is what it is unfortunately.

    • +1

It is what it is unfortunately.

Nothing unfortunate about it. If women won't even attend when it's free, then there's nothing wrong with that. Just because men like sport, doesn't mean women must also like it in equal measure.

      • +3

Women know it's crap and only follow AFL.

  • +1

How dare young women get off their technology and play sport

    • +2

Um what? No one cares if women play footy. I guess that the "problem" that they're trying to solve lol.

  • Surely this season all spectators to AFLW games should be asked to make a gold coin donation to the fire charities? Not mandatory but requested.

The cost of staging AFLW games is certainly not free- the venue charges, the security charges, the players are paid…So it only seems reasonable that spectators do their bit but for a charitable cause affecting most of the nation.

Seems that asking spectators to pay a small donation for every game they attend this season would be appropriate and could be a huge endorsement of the game and help to the people who need it.

And would also give us an indication of just how popular this game really is.

    • +3

And would also give us an indication of just how popular this game really is.

I think the AFL confirming that all AFLW games in 2020 will again be free entry, except one already says how popular it is.

      • +2

        It's a white elephant.

    • -1

They already have that for one game, it's $20, proceeds going to the bush fire cause

Why do we need anything other than that? This is more about the sport and giving people a chance to see if it could turn into something big.

      • +1

The 2019 AFLW GF had a crowd of 53,000 at Adelaide Oval - more than attended any AFL match at the same venue last year.

I think the time to continue subsidising the sport with free entry is over.

        • That game should have had a gold coin donation IMO… however it wasn't the norm.

    • +2

That cost would be passed on to the Men's Game….

  • +2

The AFL's biggest concern with this should be that they even seem to be struggling to get more women and young girls to come and watch it in sizeable numbers (very slow growth). You'd think sexism couldn't be used as an excuse there. I wonder what their research says and how long it will take to get to a point that they can start charging for tickets without reducing spectator numbers. Value is in the eye of the beholder/customer in all aspects of life.

The new women's teams for this year will add some additional interest for aligned fans of the existing men's teams at least.

    • +1

Agreed. Is this similar to if they tried to create a Men's ANL (Netball). YOu really need people to genuinely care about the game…and most men don't. Similarly is AFLW too niche? Is it too aggressive a sport for females to, as a group, engage with? Similar to netball being the opposite (zero contact)? Even soccer as a no contact sport has an element of argy bargy which appeals to guys. Netball..you breathe on a player and you have to stand submissively beside them.

  • +4

Clearly discrimination, the men's games should be free too.

    …..

  • I would pay for a ticket if they made it like the LFL.

  • For the repetitively boring naysayers, I’m sure the VFL/SANFL/WAFL were all elite 3 years into their existence too. It needs time to grow and improve.

    • +3

These leagues were all built up naturally from state level. Creating an artificial national competition that is televised from the get go is a recipe for disaster.

      • +1

This times 1000. My issue before it started.

And to the earlier point, many of the teams existed prior to the official commencement of these state leagues too.

AFL just wanted to piggyback on the Women's Soccer World Cup momentum and just slapped together a league in no time.

  • +1

I refuse to go until there is equal pay for our female athletes compared to their male counterparts

    • -2

      😂😂😂

    • Everybody should follow budgetgaming's stance!

  • +3

The comments here remind me of the backlash Mark Bosnich copped when the Matildas lost 7-0 to an under 15's Newcastle Jets squad & he said “The next time they say they want to get paid like the Socceroos, I’d be bringing this up”
