[VIC] South Melbourne Market Dim Sims, 600g $6 (Usually $12) @ Woolworths

670

6 pieces/600 grams. These go on half price just once a year - time to stock up. I assume this is a VIC only line. I believe some stores also stock the chicken dim sims too.

What is so great about “south Melbourne dim sims”??

    • -4

Nothing. I think they’re revolting but the queues at the South Melbourne Market seem to tell that people love them.

      • -2

        Agreed. Very average albeit inexpensive

        • +6

they used to be hand made, had been eating them for 40 years as the original owner used to sell then when i went to school near there ….. they expanded to cater for more stores and supermarkets and quality has really nose dived …..don’t eat them anymore ……quality went down hill about 6 year ago ……

          • @garage sale: Is that when they had three stores in the city? Only one left now at Emporium, never see people there though.

Taste is subjective, but I can honestly say there's a huge bloody difference between the handful of fish and chip dimmies I've had…and then there's South Melbourne steamed dim sims.

God, even the size is massively different? They are huge!

I work just down the road and haven't noticed stupid lines, they moved fairly quickly.

My question to you is, what is a good dim sum? Where can I buy them?

        • Try Long Dragon, which is a couple of kms from South Melb market.. .it's actually on Kings Way, https://www.zomato.com/melbourne/long-dragon-dumpling-house-…

@calcium: Hell yeah I know long dragon! Great dumplings!

*Edit seems two people disagree ¯_(ツ)_/¯

            • @FlatulentFrank: Friend ordered the 4 dim sims from Long dragon, what came out were Marathon foods spec.

The dumplings however can certainly be tasty.

Loi Eng in Ferntree Gully. Best Dim Sim I have found in Melbourne, and sadly Ive searched far and wide for the best Dim Sim in Melbourne.

There is also a 'huge bloody difference' between fish and chip dimmies & South Melbourne steamed dim sims compared to what dim sims tasted like a few decades ago… It's like they are now a totally different product.

@jv: Did they even have computers when you were young jv? At least a century ago.

My good friend Charlie let me use his.
I often visited Mr Babbage at his home in London where we’d go on pub crawls,

      Yes, totally overrated.
I was expecting something that tasted amazing the first time I got to try them and nope, just big, bland and greasy. They are famous for being famous dim sims, but I can see no reason at all for the hype.

      • +3

They used to be amazing but now you can buy them everywhere and I think they’re victims of their own success. Mass produced and the size and quality has dropped off.

        • Are you having them fried or steamed? They are much better steamed imo

          • +1

            @Agarwal: Tried both.
Steamed were better but I think it was just the hot sauce that I liked

          • @Agarwal: I've had them twice, fried only. I think that was my mistake, they were just ok and I prefer regular dimmies fried, more skin to meat ratio.

I'll have to try them steamed.

Gonna clean out my local woolies and get some raincheck as well.

    • +8

Good. There’s been some sticky gunk at the end of aisle 12, the rest of the staff have been ignoring it.

  • +1

Best dimsims are the Emperor dimsims from Costco!

  • +2

    Has anyone tried air-frying these?

    • Yes. You’ll need to keep rotating them if you want it golden.

  • +5

    steam them then fry, yummmm

  • They sound like the doughnuts at VIC Market tbh…

  • +4

I grew up around the corner from the South Melbourne Market and put many hundreds of these away in the 90s, fantastic fried or steamed, and their spring rolls were sensational too.
Always with dark mushroom soy sauce.
I had a couple of the dim Sims recently in the Geelong area from a fish and chip shop and they simply were not the same at all, and also smaller.

    • +1

quality deteriorated when they expanded to shops outside of sth market and supermarkets ….some things don’t scale at quality …… the old guy that founded the stall would turn in his grave if he tasted what they have done …..

    • where do we get dark mushroom soy sauce?

  • +1

Yes but $6 for 6 BIG dim sims that are "not quite as good as they used to be" but still better than most could be considered a bargain yes ? Just askin' for a friend

    • +1

at reduced price, yes it’s a bargain ……better than marathon dim sims.

  • Back in the 90s these were awesome bought direct from the market. Ive had a few recently (not from the market), other than being larger than your average, they weren't anything special.

  • Shumeis dumpling co!
Have the best home made dim sims ever they are on Facebook and are often at local markets they are nice and big

  • The best Dim Sims in Melbourne would be in Camberwell, at Camberwell express noodles. They are massive, home made and the flavors are amazing.

  • I stock up doing Woolies 50% off Freezer sale and vs the ones sold at Sth Melb market these are terrible and mine are still sitting there to punish myself one day .

  • +1

Bought a couple to try and they are way too salty for my taste.

    • “ On their own, pork chops are a lean, bland cut of meat. Seasoning with salt before cooking is an essential step in bringing out the meat's natural flavors.“

I guess there’s a fine line. Probably more salt in a dim sim than you’d need for a pork chop.

  • The homemade dim sims at Butchers Diner located at the top end of Bourke Street are pretty good. They’re open 24/7
