½ Price 'The Spice Tailor' Varieties $2.75 @ Woolworths

870

I've been waiting for ages for these to go half price again as my stock is getting low. Unfortunately doesn't apply to all of the Indian spice varieties but there are still some decent selections.

These are in my opinion the best Indian sauces out there.

The half price varieties are:

The Spice Tailor Hyderabad Biryani 360g
The Spice Tailor Delhi Black Makhani Daal 500g
The Spice Tailor Classic Tarka Daal 500g
The Spice Tailor Bengali Coconut Daal 400G
The Spice Tailor Delhi Biryani 360g
The Spice Tailor Punjabi Channa Masala Daal 500g

  • Got all excited for a second. I stocked up on the biryani this week. Definitely try it!

    • How are you associated?

      what about toilet paper ?

      • Already bought in bulk months and months ago

  • +1

    Definitely worth buying at $2.75.

  • +2

Shame not the tikka masala and butter chicken :(

    • I got a 3 pack of the butter chicken at Costco for about $11 I think. Delicious and so easy.

  • Thanks OP. Will stock up

  • I have never tried this, is it the indian equivalent of Heinz spaghetti in a tin for italians or better?

    • Nvm, wrong comment

    • +2

What you are referring to would be more like the pattaks type sauces, these generally have real spices and taste quite nice when the instructions are followed

    • +1

These are very good as they include the spices separately.

    • +1

They’re not as good as making daal or biryani from scratch but they’re not too bad

      • Of course it isn’t.
It is not intended for people that have the time to make daal or biryani from scratch.

    • Much better. The Chicken Korma is my favourite and it's better than a lot of Indian takeaways I've had.

    • If you can cook at the level of an average home cook you can get past 80% compared to a very decent local indian restaurant.

They destroy anything else on the shelf

  • I'll try the daals. How's the biryani?

  • +1

I've tried these before and they are really good for amateur chefs.. all ingredients inc

    Is this just for vegetarians?

    • +2

In the biryani you can add chicken / mutton (goat meat) to suit your palate - best would be to leave the protein soaked in the spice mixture for some time and then add the rice. Garnish with some deep fried onions on top along with boiled and then lightly fried egg - they go nicely too!

      • Oh thanks.. What other packs go well with meat?

      • +6

Mutton isn't goat - it's an older sheep.

        • +1

There are different meanings in different cultures/countries. Often it refers to one or the other, but sometimes it can also refer to both interchangeably.

          • -1

@UrMumsOnlyFan: I'll remember that next time I'm in a different country/culture. But for now, Mutton still means Sheep meat.

            • @1st-Amendment: Thanks for letting us know what you'll do, always good to know what the Bangbus is up to. But for now, this is about Indian food.

Enjoy the mutton, whatever it means to you.

    • +1

When you are cooking your vegetarian, just add the ingredients from these packs for some extra flavour.

  • These are great, with some rice or roti they'll last two meals. About as cheap per serving for a tasty meal as you can reasonably get

  • +4

The packaging for meals like this upsets me

    • +4

Have you ever seen the packaging for seaweed crisps?

    • +2

I hate the ones with personal insults and pictures of dead pets

    • No it doesn't..

    • Nothing that a hug to your tree cannot fix

    • It's necessary… sorry! You could always potentially wash them out and then put them in the redcycle bin?

  • No Goan Curry?

    • thats the best one!

  • Should specify this is for the Daahl varieties, not the Curries..

  • Are these like the ones being sold at the reject shop for $1 each?

    • Nah, those ones are from the brand Street Kitchen and they're crap. Spice Tailor kits on the other hand are definitely not crap

      • For the regular price of $5.50 I would certainly hope not.
I haven't tried the Street Kitchen ones, but for $1 I'm not expecting something great. Just like if you buy a Coles brand meat pie you can't expect it to taste as good as a regular meat pie.

    • They look just like them don’t they!

  • +1

No Goan Curry = No Good.

Buy Goan Curry.Go to Asian grocer and buy bulk mustard leaves, black peppercorns and cloves. Add a good serve of the bulk buys and some chili to the miniscule serving of dried herbs provided with the packet - grind herbs, heat herbs, add crushed garlic and ginger, add meat and then cook as per packet recipe and get a real FIERY Goan Curry. Slow cooker works a treat after the base steps.

    • +1

      FIERY Goan Curry

umm.. no thanks, curry may taste nice but not ready for the aftermath. Sounds like even releasing wind will burn.
      Goan with the wind

      This sounds suspiciously like cooking

Perfect to help me get thru the 50kg of rice I have just stockpiled.

Then you can use your toilet paper stockpile the following morning!

      • +1

Mensa has recently stated that your IQ is 150 less the number of toilet rolls in your house. Good job people.

        • +2

Well that's not fair, the smart people stocked up around new years when Amazon were selling Quilton for peanuts.

          • +1

@ssquid: I have found my people

            • @tzar: if you must, good job and welcome to the machine.

          • -4

@ssquid: Smart people know how to make a decent income therefore don't need to waste time trying to save 20 cents on a roll of toilet paper.

            • @1st-Amendment: Some of us are smart enough to do both.

              • @Yola: Spending more than 20 cents of your time to save 20 cents is not smart.

                • @1st-Amendment: Maybe you're doing it wrong I save hundreds.

                  • -2

@Yola: "Hundreds of dollars" is not a decent income where I'm from.

  • +2

This will be the same price at Coles starting 11/3.

    • The full range?

      • +1

just checked their catalogue and a lot more options including the goan which is amazing

  • +1

Could anyone rank the different flavours best to worst?

    • +1

It really depends on your taste, go for what heat level you like and just try a few, I haven't tasted any bad ones from this range.

    • Look up previous posts on here, people have done that.

    • +1

Start with butter chicken, then go tikka, then go full bore on everything else. Even ones I thought I'd hate I loved, just in a different way. Always nice to have something different!

  • +3

These taste really good. But following the instruction which tell you to flash fry the spices in hot oil wound up spraying oil all over the kitchen

    • Yes, I fry it in a big pot and it stops most of the spray but still some do splatter out.

    • +1

Meh… small price to pay for an insane curry!

    • I think it would be fine to dry fry to give some life to the spices

  • Heat your oil (prefer ghee) and I mean heat it, drop your spices in and stir them around for at least a full minute, base sauce, minute… add your meat/vegies etc, full minute, then your simmer sauce, mix, simmer. Don't add too much of whatever, you still want a fair whack of sauce in it, if you stuff up, you can rip open another pack for the simmer sauce and use the spices and base to zing (double up) next time you are cooking.

Honestly I cannot tell the difference between this pack and the local restaurant. Even including a pack of microwave rice it costs me $7 a full blown huge serve! Versus $14-17 from the local. Not to mention no need to go out etc.

Best curry sauce on the shelf!
