With Pixel 4 at $524 for 64GB and $599 for 128GB, this is a no deal for me.

I remember seeing a fair few terrible reviews for the Pixel 4, but everyone seemed to love the 3/3a

      • +5

Well yeah, I think everyone loved the 3a but it doesn't help that HN is still selling the 64gb for $649.
Both the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 4 are cheaper.
That should probably tell you something.

As for the Pixel 4, quite frankly I'd prefer a 3. The 4 sounds like a nightmare.

I've had both the 3 and the 3a XL. IMO, the 3a XL is a fantastic balance of functionality/battery life. I found the 3 to be absolutely atrocious in terms of battery life for not really all that much more functionality than the 3a XL for what I was doing. I'd avoid the 3 purely based on how terrible the battery life is.

@tastybaklava: Here's to hoping that the 4a isn't too far away. Currently I think they're keeping to a May release, but with everything else going on I'm not sure how accurate that will be.
Plus, it's the only way the 3a will drop in price.

          • @tastybaklava: People kept saying that to me, but having bought one back in January - I'm still having no problems with the phone lasting a complete day and still having 30-40% left by the time I get home, with heavy usage throughout the day.

Google hit the sweet spot with the 3a, the perfect mix of features at a decent cost with an excellent camera.
It was so good it gave no reason to waste money on the the 3 or 4. Google must realise this since the 3a is almost never on sale.

The reviews were poor when comparing the 4 to other flagship phones released in the same year. The s10, when priced equally, is a much better phone.

But as someone who had a pixel 3 and now owns a 4 I can say that the 4 is a far superior phone. It fixed the frustrations that I used to have with the 3 (horrendus battery life being the main one).

At full price the 4 is horrible value for money, but half price through the voda deal or JB's deals makes it very attractive.

FWIW I'm running Pixel Experience on a MI 9T (easy install) and it's bloody great. Far better / more seamless than MIUI. Pixel on the (semi) cheap

    • +1

      Why?
Miui is far better than stock android, has way more features and gives you way more control. Specially if you build your own miui through mi-globe or something.

Just keep in mind battery life is bad, if you're a heavy user look at the 3a or another phone

  • -3

I think the title is wrong. Should be 4 not 3

  • How bad is the battery life of the 3 really? As notoriously bad as the 4?

    • I can't tell you whether it's as bad as the 4 as I've not personally used it. I do however have the Pixel 3 at the moment and I'm averaging about 5 hours screen time with my use (which is heavy. Bluetooth mostly on, connected to my XM3's, YouTube Music, a lot of social media and eBay use) so my benchmark is to get about 30mins per 10% of battery. I reckon if you're getting this, that's a solid battery.

      • I would love to see your battery usage this is by far the most of anyone that I know with a pixel! Any tips of tricks (aside from the usual ones screen brightness etc)

I actually find that avoiding apps that drain battery in the background help a tonne. For example, I don't have Facebook or Instagram on my phone because I noticed that it'd use a few mins and have hours of background use. I still have Messenger, WhatsApp etc for communication and if I need to use FB I use it in the browser. Note this is 5hrs of 100% - 0% with probably about 3.5hrs by end of day with 20% or something. I'd love to include screenshots but I don't have any :(. That being said mine was a recently replaced unit, perhaps that's just how the battery performs at new?

I have one and the battery isn't great, its my only gripe. Im getting 3 hours of on screen time, so for me that means I get not quite 18 hours of life so pretty well every day i need to charge at some point. Most people i know with one are in the same boat.

    • normal day for me, it will be nearly in the red on train home from work. go out after work for drinks or dinner, it will be dead in the middle of it all. screen on time is 3hrs-5hrs depending on reception for the day. can a battery that doesnt last all day be regarded as anything but terrible in this day and age?

I bought one back in January - I'm still having no problems with the phone lasting a complete day and still having 30-40% left by the time I get home, with heavy usage throughout the day.

On a light usage day - like when I'm at home and doing very little on the phone - the phone still has over 50% when I go to bed around 11pm.

    • It's worse.

I love my Pixel 3; I got it for around $550. The camera is really good. I ran out of batteries once when I went out drinking after work.

    • 'ran out of batteries '

  • Battery is fine for me. I'm not a heavy user, but I always have the screen brightness up full, WIFI and BT always on etc.

  • The Pixel 3 used LG POLED and there were many reports of poor screen uniformity.
Wouldn't touch one with a barge pole after my experience.
The Pixel 3 XL on the other hand used Samsung AMOLED and was a fantastic display.
I've owned both and the difference was night and day.

    • The grey uniformity on my Pixel 4 is shockingly bad :(

  • i have this phone and the battery will die before bedtime if you dont charge. get around 3-5hrs SoT depending on reception for the day. overall the phone is good at this price. not sure how many more updates you will get though. someone will be able to help me out
