Need a new plan and possibly a phone? Advice please.

My current phone plan expired (kogan 365, 3GB, unlimited for 170$) and I am in search of a new one. In addition my DH needs a new phone as well.

Would it be best to consider the JB HIFI Telstra deal for 12 month contract + $400 credit to a new phone? My DH just needs a decent phone and not the new s20 or iphones. I have a s9+ and I couldn't mind changing to a pixel 4 or s10e. I missed the s10e deal for $99 sadly.

My other option is to get the Optus 120GB unlimited calls/text for $150 for myself and wait for a phone deal for DH?

Thanks in advance.

This is from baby forums right?

It's one of those things that does my head in for no explicable reason. Why not just write husband or partner!

Hubby has chosen your DH nick name. He will now be known as the Desperate Housewife.

  • Cheap belong etc sim, keep your phone, pick him up a Galaxy S20 from one of the current deals? Not a lot of difference between the S9 and S10.

  • If it's just the plan then this maybe?
    https://www.aldimobile.com.au/plans/99-super-pack/

  • Grab a Used S10+ for $600 and get the Boost $300 SIM.
In total, you're spending $900… which is much much less than getting a Phone in a Contract. And the "upgrades" will be very minimal in both the phone and in terms of the cellphone-service that you will come to naturally use.

PS: This is just general advice, your use case may be different to many others, so get what satisfies you first and foremost

  • Sorry, I watch alot of those reddit things on YouTube and that's what they seem to call husbands lol.

Anyways looking at keeping costs down.

The telatra deal is 780$ - 400$ = 380$ for the plan. Compared to the 150$ optus plan addition costs are 230$ which essentially goes towards a 400$ phone (reno z or p30 lite- something similar to these). Unless I am thinking of this wrong?

I also want to add that I use very little data because I am always around wifi.

    • Okay I was thinking about this all wrong.

If I just wanted a buy a $400 phone the plan will cost me $380 out of pocket which has tons of data I won't use so going the boost $150 route will be best and I can just pick up a phone around $400 or on sale later for my Desperate Housewife.

      Thanks everyone =P

      • Yeah, stick to the Boost $150 or $300 deal ($240 discount). Or if you're lucky, there's the $200 Telstra deal that comes on rarely.

So which phone to get, the best value can be found on gumtree buying a used 2.5 year old ex-flagship (ie Google, Sony, Samsung, LG). Or a used 1.5 year old alternative-flagship (Huawei, ZTE, Oppo, ASUS).

As for OzBargain Favorites, here's the shortlist:
        - Realme Pro 5
        - Xiaomi Note 8 Pro
        - Moto G8 Plus
        - Nokia 7.2
        - Nokia 7 Plus
        - Sony XZ Premium
        - LG V30

  • Get the current 356 day 120Gb Boost SIM deal for $150. Works out at 10Gb a month with unlimited calls. Plus it's on the Telstra network.

    • Oh okay, I heard telstra network was better than optus so this might be a good option. ty

  • I also want to add that I use very little data because I am always around wifi.

Belong Mobile $40 Starter Kit for $15 @ Australia Post

Before you port/activate make sure you get a promo code from a friend already with Belong or the OzBargain Belong pool for an additional $20 credit.

6 Months 7GB - Start out on the $10 1GB per month plan. When the first billing cycle comes you'll already have 1GB data plus you get another 1GB (Double Data). The first 6 months cost is covered ($40 starter pack credit plus $20 referral credit).

    Double Data (1st month)
If you want double data DO NOT port/activate on these dates 4th, 12th, 20th, 28th. These are the start of new billing cycles. They are the same every month.
One month worth of data is credited on activation, and another on your first payment date, 1-8 days later. So you effectively get double data for the first monthly payment.
