Congratulations on you 2908th post dealbot… Although I'm not going to make a song and dance about it

    • +11

Thanks mate. Numbers don't mean much to me. I just try and share what I think is a good deal.

  • Cool, thanks for this, was hoping some musicals would join the club of free things available.

  • +4

Nice. This version of Joseph is wonderful, with great actors, and good melodies. Kids will have a ball watching this.

    From Wikipedia

Lloyd Webber used a variety of musical styles, including parodies of French ballads ("Those Canaan Days"), Elvis-themed rock and roll ("Song of the King"), western music ("One More Angel in Heaven"), 1920s Charleston ("Potiphar"), Calypso ("Benjamin Calypso"), jazz ("Joseph's Dreams") and 1970s go-go ("Go, Go, Go Joseph").

The Pharoah doing the Elvis-like song and impersonation is quite amusing. Generally lively and light-hearted, good to lift the spirits in these times.

Excellent. Get the horrendous musicals out the way nice and quick to get to the good stuff…..

What’s the buzz, tell me what’s happening?

  • Do we need a VPN to watch them?

I just rushed to OZB to post this splendid cultural deal. Gazumped (so to speak) by dealbot. Felt just a little better when I gleaned that dealbot is more than a mere 'bot.

  • 7pm in which time zone? UK?

    • Streaming has begun 5 mins ago.

  • Watching now. It's the film adaptation, thought it was an actual recording of a musical theatre production. But I guess you would have figured that out by the description.

    • It is the musical theatre version. What one were you watching.

      • That comment was written for Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, which was playing that week. Right now, The Phantom of the Opera - 25th-anniversary celebration is playing, which is indeed a stage show.

  • The original JCS was great. How does the 2012 one compare?

  • Awesome deal. Thanks!

  • Great encore. All worth it for the end. 2 odd hours well worth it.

    • Agree. This is a good one to watch, not the Gerald Butler 2004 film version, which is a bit of a sell-out, to have a celebrity name for the principal role, despite singing not Gerald's main strength. Ironically, the other cast eclipsed him in the singing department. E.g., Patrick Wilson & Emmy Rossum in this All I Ask of You.

  • Oh no I missed Jesus Christ and Joseph…. Is there anyway to watch them?

    • Some libraries might have them in physical media form - though the chances are low, given the material is not that new.

      • Nah libraries dont have them…. tried a few

  • Hope the Phantom sequel "Love Never Dies" will be shown too. That show was filmed in Melbourne at the Regent Theatre, with Australian cast, including Ben Lewis, Anna O'Byrne, Simon Gleeson. Simon Gleeson is one of our finest musical actors today, went on to play Jean Valjean in Les Mis in Aus and London.

A taste of the main song in Love Never Dies by Ramin, the Phantom in the currently free "Phantom of the Opera" show.

Thank you bluesky for the love never dies song. Appreciate it

      • You're welcome :-)
BTW It has been confirmed via email. "Love Never Dies" is the next show.

  • Love Never Dies - sequel to Phantom of the Opera, is streaming now.

The next ALW show is the Royal Albert Hall Celebration of his works.
It premieres on May 2, 4.00 am, and will be available for 48 hours.

This is a good one because it has such a wide variety, with highlight pieces from all his various shows.
The star line-up is pretty impressive too: Antonio Banderas, Boyzone, Dame Kiri Te Kawana, Donny Osmond, Elaine Page, Glenn Close, Julian Lloyd-Webber, Michael Ball, Sarah Brightman, Tina Arena, amongst others.

It includes works from Aspects of Love, Cats, Evita, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, Phantom of the Opera, Starlight Express, Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down the Wind.

Good performances all round, and the cello piece by Julian Lloyd-Webber, ALW’s brother, is quite amazing.

I have watched this show several times in the past, and can highly recommend.

  • Merged from FREE Andrew Lloyd Webber's CATS (1999) Stream for 48 hours @ Twitter & YouTube
    Go to Deal

Cats will be streamed at 7pm on 15 May (~ 4am 16 May AEST)and is available for 24 hours in the UK and 48 hours elsewhere. Quoting the musical’s famous West End slogan, Paige encouraged her Twitter followers to watch it “as it won’t be for ‘now and forever’.

    AND in YOUTUBE

The original filmed version of the musical Cats, made 20 years before Tom Hooper’s much-mauled box-office cat-astrophe, is to be streamed online. The film will be made available for free on YouTube as part of The Shows Must Go On!, a series of recorded Andrew Lloyd Webber productions that have included Jesus Christ Superstar and The Phantom of the Opera among others.

The 1998 film of Cats stars Elaine Paige as Grizabella, the role she originated when the musical premiered in 1981 and which brought her a top 10 hit that year with the song Memory. The cast includes John Mills as Gus the Theatre Cat, Ken Page as Old Deuteronomy and Susie McKenna as Jennyanydots. It is a streamlined version of the stage production, filmed without a live audience at London’s Adelphi theatre.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, whose new West End version of Cinderella is one of the many productions delayed by theatre’s coronavirus shutdown, has been playing his own compositions for fans on Twitter in recent weeks. On Sunday, he performed Skimbleshanks’s song.

I have a good feline about this

      • Lol
You deserve a meowntain of applause for that

    • +1

Is this suitable for kids around 10yo?

Best answer I can come up with is, the recent movie would be, not sure about this version…

      • In Aus, it is classified G.

        Parent's Guide

        Profanity
The word "Hell" is used once.

        Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking
        Occasional references to alcohol.
The "Skimbleshanks" number has the lyrics "With perhaps a drop of Scotch while I was keeping on the watch".
The "Gus: The Theatre Cat" number mentions a "toothful of gin".

        • +2

“The word "Hell" is used once.”

          All is lost…

      • I took my two daughters to see this show live, yes it is suitable for younger kids but they will probably find it boring like we did.

    • OP, your post description will be useful as a comment in the other post: Free - Andrew Lloyd-Webber Musicals @ The Shows Must Go on YouTube, if you choose to add it there.

I have a feeling this post could be removed, and treated as a duplicate of that post. If your post is merged in, it will retain your description, but if they treat it as a duplicate, the useful description you provided will be lost. So perhaps you want to add it there yourself.

Thanks for the heads-up though. I will be watching the show.

    • We saw Cats live a couple of years ago when they were in Melbourne. Wasn't that impressed with it, especially after seeing the Lion King.

      • +1

Well yeah, everyone knows that you consume cat based literature in ascending order - Cats, then Tiger King, then the Lion King.

    • -4

Why they are streaming the 90s performance, where the hell are recent shows. Stingy!

      • +2

        r/ChoosingBeggars

    • -4

      Stream for 48 hours

      Yeah, not happening.

    • It is a streamlined version of the stage production, filmed without a live audience at London’s Adelphi theatre.

      Has a modern feel, then…

    • -3

      Still too expensive.

  • +1

    Cats shudders

  • I'd rather sit through 2 hours of a scratching black board than watch Cats again.
How Cat's was able to do so well in the theatre amazes me. Why they made a movie out of it amazes me even more.

  • Awwww I missed JCS.
