  • if I have a Thinkpad X1 Yoga 3 would i be better off with one of these, or the Thinkpad one.

    • +2

I have the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 dock and it's fantastic. I would say that the main difference is that the Thinkpad dock can charge (and also includes a 135W charger), whereas this doesn't seem to have charging functionality so you'll have to plug in your power brick.

I also have a Thinkpad USB-C dock at the office and honestly, unless you need the extra IO or higher resolution display output, I'd just go with the USB-C one. Basically if you're just plugging in one or two 1080p monitors (or one 1440p) and a keyboard/mouse over USB, then I'd go with the Thinkpad USB-C dock. If you're plugging in multiple 1440p or 4K monitors, storage devices or Gigabit ethernet, then yeah, Thunderbolt is worth it.

NB - the Thinkpad Thunderbolt dock is much more expensive (around $380), but I feel like this is the sort of thing that will last many laptop upgrade cycles easily.

      • so expensive! i'll keep looking at gumtree lol

  • Anybody know if this dock is active display port? I have this old 30" Cinema Display that I can't for the life of me find a usb c to display port adapter that will work with it.

I too have 30” Cinema Display and I use Apple’s Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adaptor, third party ones should work too. And I use the DisplayPort out on the CalDigit ThunderBolt 3 dock I have.

      • Does the Apple dual Link DVI adaptor need a USB power source as well?

        • Yeah, required for the processor in it to convert the signal from one type to the other

  • Code only seems to work for the silver variant, and not for space gray option.

  • Only one USB3 port for that price.

    • The $33 model has two, I don't think the $150 dock is worth looking at.
