    No Google apps….

    • +6

Google apps weren’t preloaded, but you can have them by installing yourself. Just download the apk files and they will update themselves to the latest.
If you google online, there are plenty tutorials.

      • +13

I've heard that you can't use banking app even if you can side loaded GMS.

        • +2

Thats true. When i tried on my mate30pro anz app will work but you will not be able to get pass the authentication, sms will never arrive.

          • -2

@Bnjam3: I believe they all wii be resolved. Either ANZ to integrate Huawei push service or GMS to be allowed again

      • +12

In the past yeah but now nah. Its getting really difficult to get GMS now, you will be getting nonstop notification which is extremely annoying(some apps wont even work). Just sold my mate30pro because i was not able to get GMS to work after accidentally formatting the phone.

      • +2

        too much hassle

      • You need to do more than just loading the APK. Else all you'll end up with just tons of annoying error notifications.

Yes there are guides to get it working without the notifications.

Hopefully Google won't implement counter measure for this sideload hack.

Ohh BTW… Super super ugly and annoying the implementation of the selfie cameras…. It's so out of place and seems like an after thought to plonk it there. I can't unuglify it… Just imagine you had a beautiful 85" oled 4k TV and somebody plonks a black pill type sticker on the top section. It's fluffed!!!! Im typing this from one… And it's annoyingly distracting.

    • +3

People want privacy, then spew when they get it haha. Can't win

  • +34

No Google apps, no deal for me

  • +25

No Google apps, no good at all.

  • +4

    Well, it's a genuine deal with 200 off….

I just wish I could make use of it. There's too many obstacles that one by one I could work around, but ad dup to be a deal breaker. No google pay would be the biggest one.

Otherwise hardware wise you have the best phone available - which sucks!

  • +6

stick with my p30pro for as long as possible

    • +1

Probably in my top 3 phones I've owned!

  • +6

    No Google apps, no go

  • +9

    DOA with no google services.

  • +8

beautiful, easily triumph over its main arrivals on all aspects … shame it cannot have goggle …. hopefully the sanction can be lifted soon and the android landscape can mount real challenges to ios.

    • Agreed!

  • +3

It may be a great deal but read this before you pulled your trigger.

    https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/04/09/sorry-huawei-the-p4…

    • Its sad to see how monopoly can ruin everything.

      • +6

If they didn't want to be banned from using Google services than they shouldn't have committed corporate espionage.

      • +7

Play silly games, win silly prizes.

Don’t build government backdoors if they want to sell on the open market.

    • +5

No banking apps, no Uber, no ebay no Netflix, and worst of all no map app usable in Europe (which likely also means Australia). You basically buying a decent portable camera here.

      • You can sideload google maps out of box without doing anything else and it surprisingly works by the way.

  • +6

Blimey if this had google services itd be a real deal at $1358, but without em it aint worth jack :(

  • +10

You either get spied by the americans or the chineses … unfortunate but convenient

    • +2

Haha so I just care about the price is good… just spy on me, I do not care. I am not that important.

  • +9

No. 1 smartphone camera on the market right now.

    • Thought Samsung was with it's 100mp camera

      • P40 Pro 50MP images look better than Samsung's 100MP images.

Anyway if you want 100MP, you need P40 Pro Plus.

    • +2

      *Except for video

    • -4

It is still S20 Ultra or Iphone.

  • +10

No Google but it's comforting to know the Chinese are watching over you :)

    • -1

      cliché from politicians…

        • +4

there are other place to post your annoying words… this is ozb for good deals, do not behave like idiot or soyboy..

    • +4

If you lose it can you contact the Chinese government to see where it is?

  • we can sideload google app , this or note 10 plus?

    • +6

Even if you side load, it isn't blocked… Push notifications and apps that depend on security like bank apps or Netflix won't work.

  • -7

I'm curious, would anyone here actually want to buy a phone with no Google apps and the OS is developed by the Chinese, who we all know are known for spying, covering up, etc. Come to think of it, I wouldn't use this even if they paid me.

    • +19

Do you have evidence to state that? But we do have evidence that USA is spying.

        • +6

I really do not care. I am not an important guy. I am just a normal person working 9-5. Even they spy on me, not matter it is US or China, why I care?

          • -8

@sy8718: Where in China are you from friend?

          • +1

@sy8718: Because in an off chance you might become a collateral damage.

          • -1

            @sy8718: I think you're neat :-)

            10/10 would spy on again

          • +1

@sy8718: I am just a normal person working 7-Eleven. I put on my uniform one arms at a time and leave all the good pies in the freezer

            • @ChadHominem: that's very suspicious. It's normal people like you that they must monitor at all times.

        • Do not take yourself that important. They are not that free to spy a normal person. If you are a politician, working in sensitive place, or a scientist won the Nobel price, then you may need to worry.

    • +16

Are you comfortable to use an OS developed by the US, who we all know are known for spying, covering up, etc. Have you ever heard what Edward Snowden or Julian Assange exposed?

      • -4

OK so would you rather Google or a Chinese OS?

    • +8

Every country in the world monitors their citizens.

      https://apple.news/Ah4hUWCOrSQqHPE4Zqicd8A

He would not rule out making it compulsory for all Australians to download the app - and carry the phone at all times - if sufficient voluntary take-up was not achieved.

Lame excuse to what is microchipping version 1.0.

"If you download this app, you will help save someone's life," Mr Morrison said.

      • -3

Pls answer the question peeps. Would you actually spend money on a Chinese OS with no google support? Would you rather be spied on by US or the Chinese?

        • +4

tbh if you offered me a phone w or w/o gapps i would choose the one without, it all depends on how you use your phone, if you feel comfortable giving all your info to google that's your choice.

        • +2

International arms/drug/terrorist/dictator may fair better with the MSS looking at them than the CIA/NSA/DHS.

      • Why do you think the government is out to get you? The corona virus app is meant to save lives.

        • +1

We have Siri and google. There is no need to download a government app to search for the information on this list.

          https://www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-and-tools/coronavir…
You can use the Australian Government Coronavirus app to:
stay up to date with the official information and advice
important health advice to help stop the spread and stay healthy
get a quick snapshot of the current official status within Australia
check your symptoms if you are concerned about yourself or someone else
          find relevant contact information
access updated information from the Australian Government
receive push notifications of urgent information and updates

        • I would consider downloading the app if it were on a open source Dapp blockchain.

  • +2

can i install bank app like commsec, nab?

    • -2

Surely can, at least cba app works fine and Google pay works fine on my mate 30 pro

    • I'm going to say no if it depends on security features. The website will work though!

    • +1

yes you can side load totally works fine. Work like a charm

  • +7

I heard it will fail SafetyNet after installing Google apps, breaking Netflix and Google Pay. Not sure if bank apps can work.

    • -1

Banking apps work fine on my mate 30 pro. Side load the whole suite and smooth as. Google pay isn't a dealer breaker here.

    • +2

      Banking apps wont work.

      • +1

        Banking apps do work.
Netflix only works in SD because missing DRM certificate.

      • +1

I think you should list a banking app that doesn't work. I use Westpac, Commbank, Citi, amex all working fine till date.

        • For those who have banking Apps working …. did you sideload GMS or just install an apk you downloaded (with only HWS)??

Another question … would creating my own apks from my current banking Apps (using an apk extractor on my current GMS phone) eliminate the security issues with downloading an unauthenticated apk online?
I assume the biggest security issues come from a phone being hacked rather than an apk of a legitimate App?

Last question … Does Google Pay work?

          • @Dazzah: The installation and functions of banking apps work, except for the registration part of your phone to be able to use it for cardless function.

The safetynet check is broken and will just get stuck when registering your phone for that function.

Gpay NFC also fails. Again safetynet is broken and you won't be able to add the credit card.

If you had payment option on your Gpay already, you will be able to use that to purchase apps no probs.

Nothing to do with having the right or altering apks, as the bank actually does a verification check.

  • +3

Came here for the 'no google' comments

  • +8

yes, you can side load g-apps etc till your hearts content, but there is still no g-pay nor anything else that requires SafetyNet checks.. also sideloading apps from other sources away from app store presents a level of risk that he average punter should weigh up etc.

otherwise, it still seems to represent good value for the hardware…

  • +7

Why are there so many up votes for this deal/phone? I honestly don’t understand…

    • +2

It looks like they like the hardware.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiUnwWHacek

      • +1

Not just hardware, they may also like the brand name or a mate of the OP.

If this phone is posted by TA or few other top posters will get up to 1000 up votes for no reason.

    • +2

Just buy what you need and ignore the up votes of a product on Ozbargain.

44 up votes, 590 clicks and 4 sold.

    • +1

Totally, Huawei were the best Android smartphone maker by far but now you have Xiaomi, Oppo, Motorola (22md April), and OnePlus all essentially the same quality. Hardware makes almost no difference for the first time this year and its mainly about the software in terms of OS and camera AI

    • +2

I agree. Don't understand why are there so many upvotes. It's not worth so much when there is such a big no GMS flaw.

  • Ooo 5g lol

  • +1

If Huawei succeeds in the mobile industry without GMS it pretty much spell the end for Google mobile eco system.

You will be surprise there has been a significant move towards the acceptance of HMS and side loaded apks by the consumer in the recent months, if you travel around Russia, Europe, East and South East Asian countries.

Consumer is finding ways to use their product without GMS, that's the same sentiment when android first came about and consumer were finding ways to do what they can on Apple phone.

I still think if Scott didn't screw up Apple Map Apple will be a very different company today, and apple phone may still be the top choice for the larger audience.

  • +2

what a nice deal! only if no issue with google…. SAD

    • +2

      Side load buddy😬

  • +8

Maybe it’s time to get out of the google ecosystem. Been using Apple without any google apps, not the end of the world.

    • Got both and had both for the last decade… Apple for work and droid for personal, I'll stick to the one with actually a choice in hardware and ecosystem thanks…

  • +3

Such a good phone,it really outweight most of the Android phones out there if it doesn't have any problem with US and Google.

    • …was reading AND instead of IF :).

You should be a good writer.

  • +1

Hope US reverse its block, then we can go back to being happy consumers. Just a shame can't use such a a good phone on day to day basis.

  • would buy one but the disgusting notch is too much, im going to buy the k30 pro. beautiful

    • The k30 pro is pretty ugly with the huge redmi on the back as well. I think the realme x50 pro and mi10 pro both look better.

      • I spend less than 1% of my time looking at the back of phones so it doesnt bother me, but i cant stand looking at a fat notch or mole or hole punch on a screen ever since the oppo find x came out in 2018.

  • +7

So many upvotes, but is anyone buying?

  • +1

Glad I got the m20pro at a premium price when it came out..there's no way I'm using a phone without google apps.

You can download the apk files however that's a massive security risk

  • +1

Easily jail broken and google apps going on…. They update just as well… I had the previous Huawei from overseas… Easily top 3 phone's I ever had… P.s I called support up last year and they sent me a patch for the phone pay capabilities.. amazing

  • Everyone is saying no banking apps. Can you not root the phone and hide the safety et check, that usually fixes it.

    • +1

Why not just buy a flagship that works out of the box?
