    Is it iodised?

    • +3

      Underrated comment.
Iodine is a must have for table salt in the typical Australian diet.

      • +1

Most salt sold as "cooking salt" in Australia is iodised. Table salt usually isn't.

        • +2

I don't think that's a reliable way to tell, Coles sell table salt in both plain and iodized, and cooking salt in both plain and iodized. In fact, other than specialty salts like "Himalayan rock salt" or "natural sea salt", all salts look to be available in both varieties:

It is not a must. And the Iodised salt is clearly labelled on the packet if it is Iodised.

        • +2

You're right, just like vitamin c is optional.

But seriously, our diet needs extra iodine, Australians tend to not eat as much iodine containing foods as other countries. That's why it's typically fortified in salt and bread etc. They don't do it for shits and giggles.

Thats’s a great price on the peppercorns. Thanks for sharing!

  • +10

Just a warning for you Toasty, on the peppercorns. I bought 3 bags last year when this was on special… and I'm still on the first. haha

    • Appreciate your info.

    • I'm the same, I have 4 bags sitting there at the moment, and I use it often for home made spice rubs for smoked meats, and I still can't get through them quick enough

  • anyone has a recommendation for a good grinder? the ones I get from target and kmart cant last

    • +4

The Aldi ones are good, been using it for an year now

i came for this comment :P

        • Me too. I can go now.

    • Wooden Kmart ones have been going strong for over 2 years. They got good capacity… Only thing is they are tall so get knocked around..

    • +2

I got one of these https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/197116/nat… it last months ( still going strong ) and we use it daily too.

      • +2

I got two of those (salt, pepper) in the last 1-2 yrs after seeing that they're ceramic.
I had others before — plastic, etc, and they didn't last long.
These ones work well for me and I don't think I'll need any other types. If they get damaged, I know where to get more of them if needed.

      • Is this grinder adjustable?

    • +3

for pepper use marlux ….made in france, mine has going to 45 years and is used daily ……

salt grinders are a throw away item as they react with the wood, if you decide on salt grinder make sure has ceramic grind mechanism.

      • Good to know. I'll remember this name marlux

    • I just bought the acacia ones at Target, seem fine!

    • +3

I use these ones, and they do a pretty good job.
It has a pretty strong grind mechanism and doesn't get stuck.

      • I have this Ikea grinder as well. They are great. Ceramic grind mechanism, glass body. I can adjust it down to get quite a fine grind.

  • so expensive

  • +11

    Oh that kind of grindr.

    • Not going to lie, we know who we are

  • +1

if anyone gets there before me - hide some pepper in the salt and I'll do the same if there's any left for a change

    • Hide them behind the white chocolate chips- no one touches them

  • Not sure if it was a bad batch but I got the rock salt from Aldi last time - some of the granules don't actually melt(?)/dissolve(?). There would be actual rock like things left after cookking with pasta for like 9-10 mins

    • are these granules a different colour when dry?

    • Those are the minerals ;)

      • +1

Nah, little bits of the Himalayas.

    • But but, I'm trying to turn into a superhero. If not Spiderman, then at least Stretch Dude or Clobber Girl.

    • think people buy punk salt because of the esthetic / looks cool rather than any health benefits ….. salt isn’t an item in your diet you consume in large quantities ….but pink salt looks prettier than white salt.

      • +3

        Punk has always been cool.

    • I'm eating cup noodles and easymac and licking salt lamps here, some extra bits of radiation should be alright.

  • Great price, I'm pretty sure 1kg of salt or the peppercorns is a lifetime supply for us

  • +2

For those of you looking for a solid grinder, check out the Skeppshult swing. It's available in different sizes, made in Sweden from cast iron and should last a lifetime. Though expensive (Starts around $89) it will make grinding dried herbs and spices a breeze.

    • Cheers for the recommendation - I've not come across that brand before and they've got some awesome stuff!

  • +2

i keep scouring ebay and gumtree looking for one of those 80cm high pepper grinders that we’re all the rage in restaurants 20 years a ago at a reasonable price …. so big that your guests would need to stand to use it or you can walk around like the arrogant waiter and grind it for them …. will go well with my fish knives and gravy spoon… which always prompts guests “WTF is that used for”.

    • Peugeot make some really exxy grinders but they look great and last

  • -3

This stuff is harvested from the sides of mountain streets in pakastan… not the cleanest way to get salt.. the benifits of eating this would be more negative then poisitive with the tini amount of micronutrients you would get vs toxic carcinogenic polutents.. its not like they can wash the salt. Lol

Ive mad the switch back to Aussie made salt or better yet, garlic salt :)

    • How do you know this?

  • +2

For anyone reading at home: tilt your head back and pretend you're grinding some salt or pepper onto your tongue.

  • +1

Is this a gift card to top up a subscription for the Grindr app?

  • Does salt go bad?

    • LOL. Salt is a preservative. It doesn't go bad. It keeps other food from going bad.

    • +1

      Does salt go bad?

Not in the conventional sense, but in areas with high humidity, it pulls moisture from the air and can become wet. Whereupon it won't pour easily from most salt shakers.

If you have high humidity, store bulk salt in an airtight container. For salt shakers, put a bit of dried orange peel in with the salt, it will absorb some of the moisture and reduce blocking of the holes. Use a bit of dried peel about 10mm across. Lasts forever, the salt preserves it.

      • Some rice grains mixed with salt in the shakers is what they use in restaurants to absorb moisture

        • Or just add some silica beads to the salt, perfect!

  • show us your pink salt.
