Emby and Jellyfin have apps for almost everything except PS4 (although you can use the native media player to watch videos via DLNA instead if necessary). Apparently Sony are very hostile towards open-source apps, you can't share the source code for your own PS4 apps due to NDAs that need to be signed to be able to publish on PS4, which goes against Jellyfin's concept (not sure in the case of Emby though).

        Bit more info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/jellyfin/comments/fe7a3k/question_a…

    • You don't want a half-ready solution on your media server/NAS device etc. You want something established and ready to set and leave to work properly with high compatibility.

Constant tweaking and updates and changes is the opposite of stability which is crucial for this purpose. Maybe in a year or so as you say, but definitely wouldn't recommend it for now.

      • +4

I find some plex updates have caused issues in the past.

Jellyfin is good, best thing about it is free hardware transcode, which is the only reason why I would consider the plex pass.

It also has an app for Android and Android TV and can be casted (also works with ios).

Having said that I am still using plex as I use the plex app on my LG webos TV.

  • I use DS Video and it does all things I need, and it's free. Am I missing something?

    • Probably not if you're asking that question. If it works for you fine on your Synology then all good.

    • +1

DTS is a problem for DS video.

      • Yes, I found the same with DS video, and it's media indexing isn't 100%, then again Plex does have issues sometimes…

        • Yeah, but not nearly as many and not nearly as often.

  • +1

Does plex pkay 4K content with Atmos audio?

    • Transcoding anything 4k is generally not going to work.

      • so what's the best way to play my 4k videos stored on my HTPC?

        • +1

Without more detail about your setup its difficult to answer.

If the HTPC is plugged into your TV then just use Kodi to play your media as it will play anything you can throw at it without any transcoding.

          • @noise36: Specs:
            CPU: Intel i7-6700K
            Video Card: GTX1080
            RAM: 32GB
            Storage: Samsung 970 Evo + 4TB Hardrive
            O.S.: Windows 10 Pro

Yes, my HTPC is plugged into my T.V. but I don't know can I play the Kodi from my HTPC to my LG B9 as WebOS does not have a Kodi app built in the TV and I also have Chromecast ultra to cast 4K content from HTPC to my LG B9

            Any help would be appreciated.

            • +1

@sageybadegey: Install Kodi on your HTPC and play files directly on the TV via HDMI? Don't need a Kodi app on your TV for that.

The built in media player on the LG OLED is actually very capable of playing 4k HDR files , it's just not very good for media management or very pretty to look at.

Plex is awesome! I have been a Lifetime subscriber for over 10 years now. It's great, if you use Plex just get this Lifetime pass.

    • +4

I use Plex free everyday, but I honestly do not see the value in Plex Premium

      • +1

Neither… Especially when i found the modified apk's for my phone and tablet that allow streaming outside your network for free.
        No need for plex pass

      • +4

        You could support the devs

        • +1

You are right, but not at that price mark, especially when there are plenty of similar free programs that do exactly what Plex Basic does.

      • -1

What is their in the free tier that is worth doing?

      • There's a few features I want that I'll buy premium for. Free only lets you share with 6 users, so I'll bump that up. Also hardware acceleration for transcoding, offline syncing easily, and trailers would be great.
I think jellyfin does a lot of it for free, but Plex is just ubiquitous and easy to use and share. I'll probably run both simultaneously for fun anyway.

I've been using plex free for years and haven't needed the pass, and I think most people won't need it, but there's definitely merit in the pass to some.

    • Do you have any guide to setup live TV?..

  • +2

Can anyone comment on the EPG for live/recording TV?

I am looking to replace my Win 7 MC as it is getting a bit long in the tooth but I have read that PLEX dropped support for OTA EPG for Australia (I am not interested in paying for ICE TV EPG)?

    • I've been wanting to setup my tv tuner in Emby but have never gotten around to it. I couldn't find much info at the time, it didn't look anywhere near as simple as W7 MCE…

    • +2

      EPG: https://www.xmltv.net/

my parents have been using windows media centre for TV recording for years, and I've been recently been trying to get them to use plex instead, as they use plex for other media. plex live tv+dvr feature has come a fair way in the last 12-18 months, but it's still not rock solid. had a few issues in the last few weeks, and it doesn't look good when I tell my mum "oh yeah that show didn't record and it's lost, and oh yeah I had to do a few things to fix it".
I can't believe how ridiculously fault-free the WMC solution has been.

it's possible on plex; the interface is nicer, the features are nicer (commercial cutting is decent), but it's hard to recommend when there's still issues. but it depends on your appetite for faults, and how critical the recordings are. if you have a network tuner sitting around, I would definitely suggest giving it a go for a month.

  • Currently on a free 30 day trial with Plex pass and can’t seem to take advantage of this offer anywhere?

  • I bought plexpass on an offer a few years ago, no regrets. Plex is awesome.

Check out the new PlexDash - much like Tautulli, albeit not as many analytics. It is beautiful though. For now, I will keep Tautulli running but it will be interesting to see how close PlexDash can get.

    • +3

Tautulli is also great for getting smart lights to turn on and off when videos are played/paused/stopped. Works very well, super handy.

      • I was actually thinking about setting up this kind of functionality the other day but I didn't realise Tautulli could do this! Definitely gonna check it out!

        • Read this comment from a Reddit post, need to integrate with IFTT, feel free to PM me if you need a hand with anything.

  • +1

Couldn't give a rats about live TV, but if I want to share my library with my siblings outside of home, will jellyfin work?

    • Depending on if they have the right device at their home, yes.

Device compatibility is where it needs improvement.

      • We all use Android, either Android TV or Chromecast - so hopefully that's fine.

        • Yes its works with Andriod, think it lacks IOS app

          • @noise36: Bugger - I don't have anything to run Jellyfin as a server on.

    • Yes but it's but it's pretty advanced to get setup.

Plex will definitely be easier and more polished to achieve that I think.

    • Yeah it would work

  • +1

Another vote for Jellyfin! It's free and does most of the stuff people want, getting better all the time.

  • +1

Ok I'm currently paying by the month through google play and can't figure out how to purchase the lifetime subscription.

There is no payment settings in the Plex account page and the only option in Google Play is to cancel. Do you have to cancel your monthly plan and then purchase again for it to work?

EDIT: Nevermind looks like you have to cancel then resubscribe.

    • I'm struggling as I was on the 30 day trial, how did you get to the right screen for it?

      • +1

I went to this page while logged into My Account and hit cancel auto renewal then it let me purchase again.

        • +1

Thanks fraid knot, this worked a charm. Signed up for life now!

  • The thing I don’t like about Plex is all your meta data goes through their server (there is no way around this) I tried to find an option to disable this but you cannot use Plex without creating an account and without your metadata flowing through their servers. The only way around this is to use to use Jellyfin which unfortunately isn’t as polished.

    • In what way?

You can opt out of the data as far as I know, and matching media is completely up to the agent you use. Although Thetvdb does use the plex mirror but you can probably turn that off.

      • +4

edit: i immediately regret replying to this person

      • You need to create an account on their website. The files themselves don’t go through their servers but meta information and stats do. I don’t want anyone to know I’m watching Seinfeld for the tenth time. If they don’t care about your data why is account creation compulsory and why does Plex need an internet connection? They have some privacy control options in there but it’s not the same as Kodi or Jellyfin where you can always inspect code yourself. I actually liked Plex it is very slick it’s the privacy aspect that keeps me away.

"You can opt-out of sending us certain playback data. "

          Wouldn't this solve your problem?

          • +1

@samfisher5986: no if you have remote access enabled, all your plex metadata goes through plex's servers. there's no way around it

you can turn off remote access, but what's the point of paying for plex pass

            • @jztilly: A connection with plex servers is not required for playback of media, only for authentication.

Plex themselves say "As described above, client playback data does not identify what content was played, does not identify what server the content was played from, does not identify the owner of the server that the content was played from, and is generalised.

Similarly, the server playback does not identify what content was played, does not identify which client accessed the content, does not identify the user who played it, and is generalised."

What part are you worried about exactly?

              • @samfisher5986: i dont care what they say, the port plex is listening on is unencrypted http. they encrypt it at their end

                • @jztilly: At that point it wouldn't matter what the situation was, you would just have to use Jellyfin instead since Plex could literally be doing anything behind the scenes.

                  • +1

@samfisher5986: Exactly. You would never know because Plex is closed and not open for inspection like Kodi or Jellyfin. A client needs connection details like the IP of a server to connect to it. So if you’re serving up content to friends and family via your Plex server their clients will connect to your server (details of your server are shared to the client via the Plex login). I don’t want to get into legality here but you see the problem with a Plex account as a gateway to access your content remotely.

                    • @bindok: Yes I see exactly what you mean.

I guess the reality is that while I don't think anything useful is being recorded now, that can change in one update.

I won't be moving to Jellyfin until there is TV support unfortunately, damn friends only have smart TV's!

    • When was the last time you used Jellyfin? I'm using it to share media with my family and friends

  • Available now through 8:59 AM PT on Tuesday, May 5, 2020.

For the lazy - expires 1:30 AM AEST, Wednesday May 6th.

Seriously can't people just do the conversion on their own posts.

OP - add this expiry please!

  • I downloaded PLEX years ago, but they wanted money for it.

How is it different to KODI that i use now and storing all my stuff on a Synology NAS and running DS video etc that anyone can watch anywhere?

Or can you store stuff on PLEX Cloud or something and save buying a NAS?

    Thanks.

    • +2

      Plex has never cost money.

Maybe make sure you are going to the correct website.

    • Plex is basically the option for those without a Synology NAS and DS video (with added capability like DTS audio which your unit won't do). It has always been completely free.

  • Correct me if I am wrong, only the Plex server would need a subscription / license
which Plex user (eg. mobile / TV etc.) can stream from the Plex server for free?

Besides, does the media content still stored in the self hosted Plex server
and each time a streaming request would required uploading from the Plex server?
I guess if thats the case then probably a NBN connection would required
otherwise upload speed will become the bottleneck causing streaming lag?

    • +1

you can set a limit for remote streaming. from memory, ours is set to 3mbps/720p per stream for brothers/parents to stream stuff from our server. but we are on 100/40 nbn

    • Plex media server and each client access to stream is completely free to setup and use. The Plex Pass is for the additional premium features as outlined on their website which most people do not need.

  • Jellyfin won't work for me. I have an N54L as my media server, which my Shield connects to over ethernet.

Plex server runs on the Shield, and works largely fine (Movies take about 30 seconds to load).

Would my siblings need to have a Plex pass to access my media? Or just a free install of Plex?

    • +1

Just a free install of Plex allows access from outside the network.

      • Cheers - if only I could run the Jellyfin server off the Nvidia Shield!

      • Via the Plex relay service, Plex free allows you to view 1mbps streaming (picture SD Netflix). Paying for this allows you to view a friend or family members library at 2mbps.

You can get around this with effort punching holes in router firewall etc…

    • +1

Can't you just run Jellyfin on the N54L?

    • +2

plex will run in docker on the n54l without any dramas. 30 seconds sounds like a long time :\

      • Will look into this. Cheers

        • +1

what OS are you running? i stupidly assumed it was xpeonology because i run it on everything

this is synology + docker running on a N40L with 4gb RAM:
          https://i.imgur.com/IBkADbf.png

          • @jztilly: Not stupidly, it is xpenology.

          • @jztilly: I've managed to connect and it seems fine. I've installed the server on another Windows pc.

I think plex provides a better picture quality. Looks washed out on jellyfin.

Can't for the life of me get it working externally though.

            • +1

@giventofly: you need to enable remote access and configure a port forward - and if you've done these and still can't connect - it could be possible you're on a CGNAT connection that doesn't allow incoming traffic :(

              • @jztilly: Yeah I have done all that - using my publicip:port but it is not finding it

                • @giventofly: what happens if you check your router for it's WAN IP, and compare it to the IP on https://whatismyipaddress.com/ ?

                  are they the same?

                  • @jztilly: No, they're different. I am using Google WiFi, so I suspect that could be an underlying issue as it isn't that configurable.

                  • @jztilly: Just saw your above comment, I am with Aussie Broadband who is CG-NAT :( it's likely why

Would plex pass work? EDIT: Looks unlikely.

Edit 2: have asked ABB to remove me from CGNAT

EDIT 3: Removed from CGNAT - now for it to take effect.

                    EDIT 4: ALL WORKS

Huge thanks to ideasman. If OzB had an aura system, it would be luminescent!

    • +1

I have a N54L also using xpenology - trying to figure out best way to share with family/friends, would jellyfin not work as well as Plex?
Considering modified apks but they would need constant updates.
Not being able to blacklist streaming content would be an issue too

      • +1

what I did is setup the main plex account with the plexpass. then added a handful of managed users for my parents, wifes parents, brothers etc

they all have their own servers logged in with the main account, we can all share content etc. works really well

      • Jellyfin has an app for Android and iOS, so sharing with family/friends shouldn't be an issue.
What do you mean by "Not being able to blacklist streaming content"?

        • I read Plex can't screen content to multiple users but jellyfin can

          • @G Wok: Jellyfin doesn't have any restrictions on streaming content like that

            • @theg00s3: Sorry I meant to say restricting content from other users on the network

              • +1

@G Wok: Yeah there are parental controls on Jellyfin, so you can restrict content based on content rating, or by restricting access to certain libraries

                • @theg00s3: Does jellyfin work as well in an automated set up with sonarr/radarr etc like Plex?

                  • +1

@G Wok: Yeah it does. I currently use Jellyfin with Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr (music) and Bazarr (subtitles)

                    • +1

@theg00s3: Cheers - will check out jellyfin and follow how it develops. Seems like consensus is that it will reach plex level in 1-2 years

  • +2

Purchased. Thanks OP! Great product and I feel I should support them even though I don't use premium features that often.

    • +1

Yeah that's the same logic I went with. The premium feature I like the most is that it adds behind the scenes with the movies.

  • slightly related noob question, Is it a reasonable idea to add 800 odd DVDs/TV Series to a NAS or is this something that would take way to long or way to much storage space? then use this plex service or similar?

    • +3

When I had the free time 10 years ago I ripped most of my DVD TV seasons. Started managing them all with Plex about 6 years ago. Its great to not have to worry about changing discs.

But nowadays it would be better to just acquire them in HD where possible though and store them on your NAS instead of spending the time ripping them. It would be quicker and you'd have better quality.

I wouldn't recommenced it unless you can't source HD versions.

      • Thanks for the speedy response!!

Are you able to recommend a HD source?

  • +1

Been using Plex for a few years now - especially after jumping on those DS918+ deals. Mainly used to share anime/TV shows/movies with other households while the NAS sits with my parents after moving out (don't have good up speeds to move it). If anyone wants to do something similar, Plex Pass has HW encoding too to help out streaming. As for downloading and organising stuff automatically, sonarr and/or radarr with transmission & jackett works a treat.

  • I use MPC BE to play 4K UHD rips with MadVR from my PC which is connected to AV receiver/main display.

Is Plex/ Plex Lifetime pass any use to me?

    • +2

      Doesn't really sound like it

  • Random question, say I don't want it to scrape the filenames and pull its own metadata, is there a way to just browse a folder using filenames and folder structure?

    • Yes, Home Movies for example will do that.

Its not a proper folder structure but it should do the job.

  • FYI You don't need this pass for 99% of Plex's features, so look carefully at what you're paying for.
