moved from plex some time back. really good to see so many people recommedning to use jellyfin here. (profanity) save your shit dollars on a plex pass and buy monero and donate to jellyfin and other open source projects instead. nerd power!

  • Do these come up often, I'll be setting up a Plex Box soon, but not this soon.

Yes, the offer is fairly common throughout the year. If you haven't set one up yet though, then you don't even need it. Plex client and media server are completely free. This is for some additional features you may never want.

  • Alright. Have spent the better part of today getting my home collection in order. Could never get external connections working, turns out, it's because my ISP is on a CG-NAT system.

Phoned them up, removed it, and voila, Jellyfin works perfectly. It isn't polished, and as a result of that, I have just purchased a Plex Pass.

Videos in Jellyfin look dull and washed out - unsure why, but Plex looks and sounds even better than Kodi.

Jellyfin is great with lots of promise, but it isn't for me. Not yet anyway.

You don't need the Plex Pass for setting up media server and having clients connect to it. It's only for the additional features like stats, tv tuner compatibility and remote offline viewing.

      • what is “remote offline viewing” ?

        • +2

I believe they are referring to downloading the content through Plex onto your phone for offline viewing as an example. That's a premium feature, which I find a little strange as it is your content, just get the server going on the network and copy it to your phone for when you need it offline, maybe harder for iPhone users I'm not sure.

ok i used to use this a lot when flying around the country was a thing

i've got an older ipad mini 4 with 16gb storage. i'd load up plex on it, pick a bunch of tv shows and movies and select "download to device".

the plex server would transcode the videos down to "medium 720p" quality and copy them over to the ipad when they were ready for offline viewing. always worked in a pinch, takes up far less space than the 1080p and 4k mkvs with surround tracks etc and still looked fine on the smaller screen.

sure you could probably go and do this manually, but i'd pick a handful of movies/tv shows the night before a flight and they'd be transcoded and on the ipad the next morning.

@jztilly: Yeah to be fair that does sound pretty handy, I think that's the only feature I would actually use from the premium side. Though not sure it justifies the price for me just yet, maybe one day.

            • @BeerCrisp: yeah its expensive but it is just a once off.

if you have family / friends that use plex - you can do what i did and use managed users. everyone gets the benefits of the plex pass, you can share libraries etc. bloody good

              • @jztilly: You can use managed users & library sharing without Plex Pass. Just instead of being a locally created user you get them to create a free plex account and then add them by email.

                • @Agret: yeh but then no one gets hardware transcoding or any of the plex pass features?

  • This is great.

I was on a yearly plan so i got a credit of $20 for the remaining months left

  • I might be doing something wrong. When I try to watch my videos on iPhone Plex app, it’s got playback limit of 1 minute. It says to watch videos more than a minute on iPhone, I need Plex pass or onetime in app purchase. Also photos have watermark over them. I read few comments here that say it’s free to use, so I am guessing I am doing something wrong. Any help will be appreciated.

You can do a one time payment to view videos on the app. To get around it, you can just watch it in a browser.

      • Perfect, thank you.

      • So, apart from Plex pass, you also need an iOs in-app purchase to watch the videos???

        • Nope, I have Plex Pass and there's no need for an in-app purchase to watch videos via the Plex app. The in-app purchase is suited for people that aren't very tech savvy and just want it to work - so it's more for the users on my server. I usually just tell them to use their browser though if they're watching on their phone.

  • Still worked for me just now, despite the listed 1:30 AM AEST, Wednesday May 6th expiry.

  • Just tried it now and it has expired. Sad I missed out.

    • Try this code 2N3BMQEQ valid until Thursday. Works out to be roughly $99 AUD

      • Might be a personal code they only gave your account?
