How was this worth $1199! Wowza..

    • +8

      Same.

Me: Oooooh it was over a grand, lets have have a closer look

      has a closer look

Me: Oh, so it's just your pretty basic, typical, roughly 400/500 dollar at most Chromebook specs? Oh.

Written on my $200 Chromie from 2015

      • You'll find the build quality of these are over over and above the $300-$500 typical chromebooks.

  • +17

Even for $499 thats not a lot of specs for a quite a bit of coin.

    • Depends on your usage - I'd rather have the IPS screen on this vs the crappy panels on other laptops with more cpu & memory.

  • +1

I've heard good things about this one. It's also worth noting the latest tablet, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet, is rolling out atm.

  • +2

No, we want the M3/i5 version deal back.

    • yes. I thought this was going to be one of those decent CPU models…

.. but then in all fairness, my Lenovo C340 with a Pentium processor chugs along fine. But it was <$250 :)

    • They're all sold out on Umart. Umart must be trying to clear stock for the new HP Chromebooks https://www.zdnet.com/article/hp-launches-chromebook-trio-th…

    • +1

Yep I snagged the m3 over the new year and love it! It was $499 for the m3/64GB storage. I mostly use it s a tablet, have Android and Linux support enabled. It's my goto device at home, prior to that it was a Chromebook Pixel 2013.

  • +9

    Was $449 recently.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/528266

    Event cheaper pre Corona
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/513255

I'd wait for a fortnight when everyone will be back at school and these wouldn't be so inflated any more

PS - written from my recent $149 HP Chromebook

    • +1

I was just going to report that ta-da it was $100 cheaper a couple of months ago. what a joke!

  • +2

Reviews are generally positive and date to September 2018. Detachable screen and stylus are probably the most interesting parts.

If the microphones are as good on my current HP ChromeBook it is the perfect tool for video conferencing.

    • +1

Thanks, but the processor seems different - Intel Core m3-7Y30 processor instead of Intel® Pentium® 4415Y , in all the reviews. Are they same or will the processor make much difference to ChromeOS?

      • +1

Honestly not that much of a difference. Core M series are what some schools use in their laptops and seem to operate… fine i guess.
Personally im just someone who refuses to dip below an i3/i5 depending scenario but if all you do is emails and Ozbargain then you wont see much a difference.

      • Intel Core m3-7Y30 vs Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y vs Intel Pentium Gold 4410Y

Due to the missing Turbo Boost, the Pentium 4415Y offers a significantly worse single thread performance than the more expensive Core m3-7Y30. This should be noticeable in daily tasks.

  • Can we install Windows 10 in this ?

    • +1

not enough storage, it's only 32 GB eMMC

      • Ah I remember installing windows 3.1 in my 286 with a 20MB HDD. Didn't leave much room for anything after that too.

Thought what crap, back to DOS!

      • 32GB is more than enough to install Win-10 from USB, with space for the apps you need, pagefile etc.

But the problem comes when Windows inevitably tries to do a major upgrade, aka "feature update".

    • Currently no, according to this.

      Kabylake Devices
While some Kabylake devices have UEFI firmware and are capable of running Windows, they lack drivers for audio, touchscreen, and other system devices. You might be able to install Windows, but it will run poorly and they are all unsupported.

The supported list of chromebooks are from coolstar. But he is not interested in developing new models anymore I guess. He suggested that

4 GB of RAM and 64 GB or higher SSD Recommended

Unless you want to have a laptop with ChromeOS/Linux, please directly buy a Win10 laptop.

  • +2

This price is such a joke for the specs

  • +1

    May be a Kids' notebook..good for students…

  • is one of the Tab S6 or Tab S5e more powerful than this?

  • The m3 version is good, best bang for buck compared to the top model In performance. It's been excellent and real fast charging

  • +5

I don't know what all the bashing is about. If someone can find me a better one with detachable keyboard and pen for the same discounted price, please let me know and I'll buy one.

I bought this for my daughter a month ago and I reckon it's a brilliant device.

    • Detachable screen to turn into a tablet with excellent on-screen keyboard
    • Great touch screen with pen

Compared to my iPad Air and my Surface Pro 4, it's punching way above it's price point so much so I prefer to use it than my iPad or Surface Pro 4. I should note though all I use it for is web surfing (with heaps of tabs) and YouTube. For surfing and YouTube it's better than my iPad or Surface.

My daughter uses it for Google Classrooms, MS Teams, Netflix, Disney+ and it's been awesome. The specs are perfectly fine full stop, not just for the price and I haven't noticed any slowness, lag or stutter.

    • Some clowns they want to spend 500 and have the specs of $2000 laptops.

      • "spend 500 and have the specs of $2000 "

        Isn't that the OZbargain dream?

        • +1

It'a a variegated universe around here, someone would drive 5 miles to save 5 cents on petrol, others are eager to spend $400 on aussie country boots

My X2 (slightly better specs) is awesome, but latest updates of ChromeOS have stopped the auto rotation between laptop and tablet mode.

Lots of reports about it. Hopefully fixed one day.

  • 4GB not good enough for linux to be useful…

  • Surface Go seems a better choice…..

    • $499 including keyboard and active pen vs $629 + keyboard ($200) + Pen ($150) = $979.

      Oh, and the X2 is 12.3" 24001600 vs Go 10.5" is 19201280.

X2 has two USB C ports.

Not really a comparison. 4GB is not enough for windows for sure.

My $499 X2 is amazing (M3, 8GB/64GB)….been using it daily for 9 weeks over a Lenovo X3 and a 2018 MacBook Pro i7 15". It just works apart the bug mentioned above, but there is at least a workaround.

I have a chromebook and it is a sad piece of tech. Seriously, can't even open anything for work (spreadsheets, word etc) with a browser open. Its all just too much for it.

    • Low end Chromebook by the sound of it.
