Was checking something on my dreamhost account and noticed that they have got a birthday sale on.

Come Join the Party!
Save over $110 on web hosting and receive unlimited disk space and bandwidth!
Sign up today for a risk-free trial of a one-year hosting plan using the promotional code "777bday11" and you'll get an entire year of web hosting (including a domain registration) for just $9.24! That's 92% off our normal pricing!

So you get unlimited everything for a year for US$9.24. After a year the cost is US$8.95 a month.

I've been using them for a few years now, and have a few domains with them. Never had any issues, and their support team is pretty responsive.

Edit: Same deal as http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/48323, except coupon is valid.

  • What happen at the end of first year?
I just wanted to host my personal website and would end it at the end of first year if the second year onward is expensive.

After a year the cost is US$8.95 a month.

If you find you don't need unlimited you can knock down to one of their lower plans, switch to another host, or wait for another of their coupon deals like this which happen a few times a year and just renew then.

And as a long time user of DreamHost, I can say that your statement is fail.

Do you have any proof to back this up?

Assuming you're hosting legal content of course… Their TOS gives them the right to cancel accounts if illegal activity is present.

    • +2

Used them for about five years and they've been great.

There is conditions to the unlimited, you cant use if for unlimited storage of backups of personal files for instance (you can have a gig or so). Given how cheap hard disk space is and how little space web scrips and database content takes up, the issue with unlimited storage isn't what it was 5 or 10 years ago since many customers will be lucky to use more than 100meg. Given they prohibit personal backups of files or illegal distribution, very few people will have too many files that see them using huge amounts of disk space.

Please do not 'neg' on a hunch. (You ruin the integrity of the site for everyone else.)

  • I get "Error: Promo code invalid for your region!" when trying to use the code :(

Tried the one from the other thread, same result.

  • Is the domain registration inclusive of the yearly price?

    • Yeh, they include a domain name with every registration, whether you pay by the year, month, etc.

Only includes .com, .net, etc. No .au's.

      • So really it's a 76c discount on a domain, and you get free unlimited hosting for a year to go with it. D:

  • Awesome, was looking for a new host, the cost of this is what I'm paying per month. 2 week trial too, so I can always change my mind, but this should do nicely at least for 12months. Cheers

Great deal. I've been with Dreamhost for 4 years and can't speak more highly of their customer service.

  • Has anyone actually successfully used the code? Not working for me (see above post), and no one has actually confirmed it successfully working yet …

    • It worked fine for me. I clicked the link as above, then on the pop-up banner clicked "signup" with the code already included. You need to go through the registraition until the payment screen where it lists the pricing with the discounted rate. No problems for "region" etc with my Aussie address

      • Gargh! That's annoying, I wonder what I'm doing wrong :(

      • Weirdness … I VNC'd to my computer at home and it worked … something it didn't like about it coming via my work network. Thanks for the help :)

do you own the domainn? eg if i want to move to another host will i need to buy the domain name etc?

    note
    Operating System
    Debian Linux

    no .net pages… (PHP etc)

    • I believe you are wrong in this. Usually Unix host supports PHP and Windows host supports .net/.asp respectively.

      • sorry, was on the phone, I should clarify, no .net pages. (PHP perl, etc only)

IE you use PHP/Perl other linux stuff, but no microsoft.net stuff.

        • Ah, yes. I misinterpreted your last sentence there as well. Cheers!

    • Well.. It's the same as with any domain name. So long as you're paying for it, you "own" it. I'd assume if you cancelled your DreamHost account they'd delete the domain name, making it available.

      • many hosts own the name, so you cant move with that domain name, also they wouldnt cancel it half way though as once its paid for its paid for the full year.

"We register domains in YOUR name and you’re free to do with them what you will! Take them to another hosting company if you’d like! We’ll be sad, but hey, they’re your domains!"

      • What do you mean by :
I'd assume if you cancelled your DreamHost account they'd delete the domain name, making it available.

So once i paid for the domain name im not own it ???

        • +1

          http://dreamhost.com/domains/

          From that page …

Sign up for any of our hosting packages and we’ll throw in a .com, .org, .net, or .info domain registration free for the life of your hosting! That’s a $9.95/yr value – included free with every DreamHost hosting plan.

We register domains in YOUR name and you’re free to do with them what you will! Take them to another hosting company if you’d like! We’ll be sad, but hey, they’re your domains!

A single domain registration is included free with any active hosting plan. Note that if the plan becomes inactive at any point during the registration year, you will be charged for that year’s registration.

        • +1

So once i paid for the domain name im not own it ???

Well you never actually own a domain name. You're renting it realistically. If you don't pay the rent, they evict you (delete the domain).

    • Most hosts don't support .NET. You generally need to look specifically for Windows hosting in order to find it. It's a lot more expensive than Linux hosting and isn't offered as much with "budget" providers.

  • Does anyone know if they're reliable and if they're ecommerce package is any good?

    • They are great, hardly ever go down.

No PayPal :/ deal breaker for me.

    • PayPal IS available, but you need to pay for any domain with a credit card.

I chose to use an existing domain and entered my CC details, once inside you can remove your CC details and opt to pre-pay the $9.24 yearly cost via PayPal.

IF you choose to register a domain you must pay $9.99 on the spot for it, after which your hosting account will be credited for $9.99 and you will have to pay nothing else for the year.

So if you want the free domain, you need to use a CC, else you can use PayPal.

    Be careful:

Once your free trial period has expired, you are authorizing us to automatically charge you for your membership at the price of the hosting plan you have chosen.

This is a good deal, but make sure you remove your credit card after signing up, if you don't want to keep getting charged every year.

    • Dooh… since when a seller automagically removes a customer if the said customer haven't mention to the seller that he/she wants to be removed?

      • Normally, I and most other people pay via Paypal, so this is not an issue. These guys do not accept paypal. Doh.

    • When you sign up just remove the credit card afterwards, you can opt to pre-pay amounts with PayPal inside.

  • I'm with Dreamhost and I would recommend them. Surprisingly very low downtime and good communication should it happen.

  • I have been with them for 2 years now, I pay a lot more than what you get with this deal and I love them. It is hands down the best hosting I have ever encountered. They have their own control panel that has one-click-install for a lot of common web stuff (like Wordpress etc.). And the best part, they provide SVN(with automatic Trac. install) and SSH! Everything is easy to manage, but they provide more advanced features for those who needs them.

Also, you can have as many domains as you want on one hosting plan, gotta love it.(Not sure how this is with this deal though, but I assume it is the same as mine)

Beware though, the servers are in the US, so load times will suffer accordingly.

Unlimited disk space and bandwidth is a scam.

    • Except it's not.

    • It's a US Shared host, they have Unlimited Internet in homes in the US.

Guys, do not click the link above as you will be signing up with the referral from the thread starter instead the promotion. I was charged $100+ for one year and dreamhost support has changed the referral to the promotion.

    • +2

The link above goes directly to dreamhost.com (if you don't believe me, hover over the link), as their information page for the promo was only on the homepage. And as the promo has finished, they have remove the details.

      You can try this link to attempt to get the promo pricing, but I can't guarantee anything;
      https://signup.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?p=777bday11

      My promo code is below if anyone wants to sign up and give me some credit - considering you've already condemned me;

    • I doubt you were charged $100… My invoices say I was charged $120 but I only paid $10 for the domain and got a credit for the rest. Monthly I owe 77 cents… simple as that really.
